[Cover Story] Master stonemason Im Han-bin
Putting one's soul into works of art from design to finish
Creating Avalokitesvara Statue in Nagoya, Japan and the front of Maae Stone Statue of Buddha at Bomun Temple in Ganghwa Island

Valuable learning from Professor Kim Chang-hee at Dongguk University
From design and supervision, production to construction

Im was born in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province, the area which is famous for stones. He started to learn stonemasonry from his brother who lived in Busan as soon as he finished elementary school. He learned it just to get by at first but became a professional stonemason under the teaching of Professor Kim Chang-hee (deceased) at Dongguk University for 3 years. With his talent in learning things quickly, he took the manager's position at Dongyang Stones in Yeokchon-dong, Seoul in 1971. Im remembered those times by saying "there was no stonemason who could sharpen a stone into an animal or human face so I made all of the orders received." Im actually does everything from design and supervision, production to construction. According to Im, many stonemasons lack in design and preparation works as they rather focus on sharpening and installing the stones but designing one's own work is vital to create a valuable work. For this, Im takes a slow procedure without greed yet keeps up the pace. This worked very well to Im's advantage to carry out restoring works of Gyeongbokgung Palace and Sungnyemun Gate.

Creating the largest Avalokitesvara Statue in Nagoya, Japan
Participating in the front work of Maae Stone Statue of Buddha at Bomun Temple in Ganghwa Island

Im created many works including Haetae at the National Assembly Building, the Equestrian Statue, Sundial and Bullo Gate at Gyeongbokgung Subway Station, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Statue (9.7m) at Manui Temple in Giheung City, the Stone Works of Korean Cultural Assets exhibited at Osaka Flower Fair, Avalokitesvara Statue in Nagoya and Memorial Tower (1950) for Collegues of Military Commission at Military Cemetery. His representative work Avalokitesvara Statue is 7.5m in the main body and 17m in total height. Im uses gravel which weighs 1.5 times more than granite because he can create a more sensitive work despite its cumbersome procedures. He also received a considerable number of orders to make charnel house, charnel grave and sacred things.

Im exerts his effort to make a perfect work that contains traditional and esthetic value. Im remembered when he worked on the pagoda at Samchun Temple in Bukhan Mountain by saying "the tower was a nine storey Ashoka stone statue which was octagonal. People might think that octagonal tower is Korea's traditional style of tower but it actually is Chiryeorae Buddhist Statue. This meant that I should not put a sculpture on one side. Then I said to a monk that I had to put Chiseonggwang Buddhist Statue instead and the monk was impressed by my knowledge."

Im also participated in the restoration project of the front of Maae Stone Statue of Buddha at Bomun Temple in Ganghwa Island. It was the largest scale restoration of cultural asset in Korea which costed 970 processed stones and $1.4M. One might have thought to use a helicopter to lift materials but the bedrock did not allow them to do that. Instead, they installed a monorail for convenience as the work had to be done in highland. In addition, Im drilled a hole in the bedrock and installed a crane to transmit electricity. Thanks to Im's idea, they could be able to finish the restoration in 6 months.

"Government support is needed for artisans"
"I'm proud to be a stonemason"

Im is regretful that the spirit of traditional stonemasonry is gradually disappearing in Korea. It is understandable in a way that one can hardly make a living with the job not to mention the physical labor. Im thinks that this is not solely one's problem but the government needs to actively involve and give a support for them. Im said "many overseas countries provide a lot of support for artisans. I'm kind of ok as I have my own workshop but many of my colleagues earn $150 to $200 a day with 15 to 20 days of work in a month. That is why people rather not to take the profession."

Im obtained a Cultural Assets Restoration Certificate (No.1395) in 1994 and has been serving as Board Member of Korean Cultural Properties Craftsman Association for 10 years. He has also served as Question Designer of Technician's Test managed by Human Resources Development Service of Korea for 5 years. He is currently working as a superintendent of exams and has seen many candidates failing the theory exam before even showing their skills. Im said "the problem is that there is not a single department at universities that teach stonemason while students from carpentry department, for example, is fostering 150 students a year. This gives a greater disadvantage to those who want to devote their lives to one of traditional Korean crafts."

Im's philosophy is "Working Hard in Consistency". It suits Im perfectly as he has been walking the single path as a stonemason for 48 years. But it could not be possible without the help of the people around him. And this is the reason Im is exerting his effort in fostering his juniors. Im said "I am proud of what I'm doing and will be doing until my body does not allow me to anymore. But before that time comes, I would like to pass down my knowledge and know how in stonemason to the next generation so that one of the valuable cultural assets in Korea will not disappear."
