Natural protein changes into a futuristic advanced material
Professor Jin Hyoung-Joon, Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, College of Engineering, INHA University
Expecting any possibility of usage for electrode material in body henceforward

Investigation the change principle of carbon fiber of spider web
Professor Jin Hyoung-Joon’s team has recently studied for using natural protein fibers for many years like spider web and finally proved the principle of the protein that is a kind of linear polymer is changing to a carbon chain compound of hexagon shape by heat. Especially, they found the switch to carbon fiber from spider web that is a natural protein fiber heated by a high heat, 2800¡É and succeeded in making carbon materials having nano-structure in variety of carbon fibers. This thesis was introduced in the magazine [Nature Communications], which is a sister magazine of the top magazine [Nature] in the natural science field on 20 May.

Also, only with a simple heating process, it is possible to produce various carbon materials having nano-structure, so it must be expecting to have a high possibility to use it in human body. Professor Jin Hyoung-Joon said, “currently, we are working on the after study to prove this and if that is proven to bring no problem like immune reaction and inflammation reaction as a material, it will affect lots of areas such as academic, industrial ripple effects hugely.’

Suggesting the world first new conceptual term
Research achievement of Professor Jin Hyoung-Joon’s team is quite meaningful beyond just thesis presentation. Most of all, [Nature Communications] took their thesis immediately without any correction during testing and criticizing it. The author also has to have all the matters for that. Despite of that, this thesis passed without any issues for the whole weeks for registering on that and professor Jin said it was a very exceptional case.

On the other hand, they named the middle materials, which are polymer and carbon, are produced by a heating process under 1000°C between polymer and carbon ‘pyroprotein’ as a new terminology. This is prominent and promising to lead the field from now on. Professor Jin Hyoung-Joon was a head of the team and the team consists of Dr. Jo Se-Yeon and Dr. Yoon Young-Soo of INHA University, Dr. Lee Sung-Ho of KIST (a branch school in Jeonbuk), Professor Kim Byung-Hoon of Incheon University and professor Gang Gi-Seok of material engineering department of SNU. For that, Professor Jin is grateful for their efforts with saying, “This result of study will be able to be recognized for the successful example by joint study based with the country.”

Place of constrictive experimental spirit
It is limitless to use a natural protein like spider web in possibilities. Already, this kind of study has been doing very actively in the states, Europe and Japan and they are making lots of industrial value. Professor Jin Hyoung-Joon is studying steadily and earnestly about high polymer engineering including a natural protein too.

Nano/Bio Polymeric Materials Lab where Professor Jin Hyoung-Joon is studying and experimenting and even leading the team was open in 2003 and has developed gradually by a study for various complex manufacturing and application field using polymers with having a motto that is aiming for being constructive experimental spirit. In particular, they are controlling carbon nano-structure based on the natural polymers and working on studying of trying to prove the mechanism for that. For last four years, they announced about 50 theses, which was evaluated for SCI level and 8 cases have applied for patents and registering so far. Besides, they are on the process of studying for diffusing research that it can diffuse effectively in a liquid of carbon nano tube and griffin, which are suing in a commercial way. Based with that study, they are concentrating on developing energy storage system including carbon electrode R&D like super capacitor, lithium ion battery with producing carbon materials out of plenty of natural polymers based with that study.

Now, Professor Jin Hyoung-Joon’s lab is run by one researcher, one student who is on the doctorial degree, four students who is on the graduated course and 2 undergraduates and they are studying for valuable study focusing on the individual creative subjects. And, they are doing with other universities’ labs and companies as well for collaboration cases.

Lastly, Professor Jin Hyoung-Joon added to his comment, “We plan to commence the study of using graphite area that will be used in the second electrode afterwards with some results that we announced recently and bionic friendly carbon materials by a simple heating process.”

By now, I think it would be great to see the opportunity made by Professor Jin Hyoung-Joon of an engineering college at INHA University who will be in charge of leading the study of carbon materials area and his nano-bio polymeric materials lab.
