"Nobody showed me the way"

Jo says "the stress I get while doing music couldn't be easily relieved. Something was stuck in my heart and stayed there. I felt everything was void. Then I started meditation. I cried a lot at first and the repressed emotions lived in me slowly camp up as a voice (Jo calls it 'the sound of soul). It was a strange feeling. But I soon realized that I could be able to release the stories locked in me." Jo said that she felt a child whose name is 'emotion' was living inside her and shouts out about her pain and wound. Through this emotional process, Jo could be able to be more honest to herself over obsession and stress she was suffering from. 
Jo says "I think that if a person is trapped in a mould made by society, the person feels she/he lost a fee will. I was taught to follow the rules and be discreet and I was royal to it. But when I expressed my suppressed feeling with my voice in a place where nobody can interrupt, I felt free and my body became lighter. Nobody showed me the way but I soaked it in myself and fully enjoy the emotion hidden in me and that was my way of meditation."

"Finding inner voice also brought me happiness"
Maybe, there are no special methods or materials for meditation as long as one can communicate with the inner self whatever the way might be. Jo says "I found meditation on sound as the right one for me because it is my job to make beautiful sound as a vocalist. But my beautiful sound not only has beautiful and bright side but also ugly, dark and wet side as there isn't only day but night also in nature. For the same reason, my stress came to me as loneliness and anxiety itself but all I wanted to do was to focus on my voice." 

Jo finally could be free through meditation she built up and gained fundamental peace. She could be able to be free from obsession to sing and perform better as a vocalist. Jo says "comparing new me with old me, the former found freedom but the latter couldn't. Being a vocalist is very tough and the competition between the singers are fierce. We need to well practice and prepare but we need some kind of consolation at the same time as we can find stability and comforts in it. I actually didn't have a single moment of happiness in the past. It was just miserable both mentally and physically. But I finally found happiness with my own will and I'm really thankful to make natural and happy sound with my voice."

Taking myself as I am
The first step to heal yourself, Dahn World says, is to take yourself as you are. In other words, you need to be honest about what characters and what kind of emotions and temperaments you possess. After 4 years of meditation, Jo not only gained a peace of mind but also physical health. The world to Jo's eyes is diverse and beautiful. Jo says "I didn't realize at first but more and more people talked about my voice and I wanted to use it for healing the world. I even want to sing on the street as long as I can sing."

A teacher of Jo once asked her to make a song about' Korean spirit' in the hope of spreading Korean soul to the world and Jo gladly accept the idea though she was a little nervous at first. Through this process Jo found stability and confidence and has tried many things. 

Three steps of Sound Meditation [tuning up - acceptance & understanding - expression and creation]

  • [First step] Arousing a sense with the sound 'dododo~'

Focus on yourself and make the sound 'Dooooo~'.
Feel the parts of your body which responds to the sound and make yourself comfortable.

  • [Second step] Accepting & feeling of emotion with sound

Sing a song with the sound 'ah~~~~~~'.
If you are sad, make a sad sound and if happy, make a happy sound.
Focus on your feeling but not on the musical notes or rhythm

  • [Third step] Creating emotions with sound

Make musical notes with your emotions naturally and then try to make you own song according to your feeling of sadness, happiness, anxiety and comfort.
