한계와 시련 속에서 해답을 찾는 인간의 모습 그려

오브제와 마티에르를 통하여 삶에 대한 낙관적 지향 표현
이남숙 화가가 만들어내는 작품들의 조형적 특징은 오브제의 차용과 두터운 마티에르이다. 표현하고자 하는 내용을 함축하고 있는 오브제를 선택하고, 모래와 화강암과 같은 느낌을 가진 마티에르의 밑바탕을 결합한다. 그녀가 추구하는 것은 삶의 희망과 긍정적인 힘이다. 외적으로 가해지는 많은 역경에도 불구하고 그것을 극복해나가는 사람들, 그리고 우리와 더불어 살아가는 많은 생명체들을 볼 때 생명의 위대함과 경이로움을 느낀다고 한다.

이남숙 화가가 특별히 무겁고 투박한 재료를 캔버스와 결합하여 작품을 만들어 내는 컴바인 페인팅(combine painting) 작업을 지속하는 데에는 그만의 이유가 있다. 이러한 재료를 다루고 작품으로 만들어가는 고단한 과정이 시련을 마주치더라도 많은 시간 속에서의 노력으로 극복할 수 있다는 인간의 의지를 반영하고 있기 때문이다.

인간은 환경을 떠나 살아갈 수 없으며 시간 속에서, 자연 속에서, 많은 관계들 속에서 살아간다. 이남숙 화가는 삶을 살아가며 만나는 많은 존재들과의 건강한 공존이 필요하고, 이는 희생적 사랑을 자양분으로 하여 이루어진다고 생각한다. 이 화가의 작품 세계는 표면에서 숨 쉬는 듯한 대지의 느낌을 표현하고 그 위에 깊이 있는 색을 결합하여, 태곳적부터 지금에까지 이어지는 진리의 연속성과 삶에 대한 낙관적 지향을 표현한다.

세계적인 아트페어인 스코프 바젤(SCOPE-BASEL)에 초대작가로 참가
막스 브루흐의 첼로 곡인 콜 니드라이에서 영감을 얻은 '콜 니드라이'는 인간의 한계와 시련, 그리고 고통의 출구를 갈망하며 결국 그 해답을 찾아가는 인간의 모습을 담은 작품이다. 이남숙 작가의 작품에 등장하는 생명에 대한 연작은 이러한 가치관을 바탕으로 만들어졌다. 보이는 것 뒤에는 보이지 않는 많은 것들의 희생이 따르며 유기적인 연결 속에서 존재한다는 인식이 반영되어 있다. 두터운 물감 층으로 이루어진 화면에는 시간 속에서 많은 것의 축적을 토대로 생명이 태어나며 그 것의 일부가 되어간다는 인식을 표현한다.

이남숙 화가는 40여회의 개인전과 600여회의 단체전 및 초대전을 하는 등 활발한 전시 활동을 하는 작가이다. 홍익대학교 미술대학원에서 회화를 전공하고 백석대 대학원 기독교미술학과에서 ‘현대 오브제 미술의 조형 원리에 대한 기독교 미학적 해석과 적용’이라는 논문으로 석사학위를 취득했다. 현재 AOU 예술대학장이자 서울 인사동에 위치한 갤러리 엘의 대표로서 현대 미술의 진수를 보여주는 작가들을 발굴해 공동 전시를 기획하고 있다. MBC 드라마 '히어로', '왔다 장보리', KBS드라마 '국가가 부른다' 등 다양한 드라마에 이 화가의 작품이 선보였으며, LG 카렌다에 작품이 수록되기도 했다. 최근에는 2014 대한민국 문화경영대상, 2015 대한민국 가치경영대상 문화예술부문을 수상하며 국내를 대표하는 화가로서의 입지를 다졌다. 이 화가는 오는 6월 16일부터 21일까지 스위스에서 열리는 세계적인 아트페어인 스코프 바젤(SCOPE-BASEL)에 초대작가로 참가한다.

The artist of life who expresses will of a human and zest for life
Finding an answer in limitation and ordeals

Zest for life expressed through objects and materials
One of beauties of Lee's works is at using borrowed objects and thick materials. Lee picks up objects which satisfies her intention and combines them with materials such as sand and granite. She pursues hopes and positive force in our lives. Lee feels wonders and greatness of life when seeing living things living together with human beings who are sailing through ordeals and trials life is constantly giving to us. This is the reason Lee is creating works in the conception of 'combine painting'. The hard and tiring process of creating something new with raw materials itself, Lee says, reflects the will of human beings to overcome the hardships lying on our way. 

We live in times, nature and complicated relationships. Lee thinks that we need to co-exist in harmony and this can be achieved based on self-giving. Lee expresses continuity of truth and optimistic life by combing the breathing surface of the earth with deep colors.

Participating in SCOPE-BASEL as an invitation artist
While listening to Max Bruch's Kol Nidrei (Op. 47, a composition for cello), Lee was inspired and created a work called Kol Nidrei. It contains the meaning of a human being finding an answer through limitation and ordeals. Lee's subject 'life' is prevalent throughout her works. There are many sacrifices behind the things we see in front and both sides co-exist organically. Thick materials on the canvas are an expression of life being born from accumulated things and it exists as a whole. 

Lee has participated in 600 group and invitation exhibitions and held 40 solo exhibitions. She studied in Graduate School of Fine Arts at Hongik University and obtained a master's degree with her paper 'Analysis and Application of Christian Esthetic on Modern Object Art's Formative Principle' from Graduate School of Christian Art at Baekseok University. She is currently the Dean of College of Art at AOU and the Director of Gallery L in Insa-dong. She is also fostering new artists and holding exhibitions for them. Lee's works appeared on MBC dramas 'Hero' and 'I Came, Jang Bo-ri', KBS 'Nation Is Calling' and LG calendar. She also won '2014 Korea Culture Management Awards' and '2015 Korea Value Management Awards' in the culture & art sector.  Meanwhile, Lee is scheduled to participate in a world renowned art fair 'SCOPE-BASEL' from June 16 to 21 as an invitation artist.
