Everything for companion animals’ health and happiness
Pet animal’s department store with differentiated competitiveness – ‘Gangyang2’
Kim Won-cheol, president of Interpet Korea

With increase of one-man families and aging population, the pet market is growing rapidly. Lately, wvwn a newly coined word ‘Petfam’ has appeared to herald the high growth of the pet market. Petfam, a compound from pet and family, means people who regard pets as their family. Such a change in perception can be found in the change of name from pets into companion animals. With increased investment by pet lovers in pets, pet goods market has built up into a size of 2 trillion won turning the table in the market.

5,000 kinds of competitive brand goods
Pet market showing annually 15-20% growth since 2000 is expected to record 6 trillion won in 2020. Prediction for the pet market is possible by looking at the US and Japan. The size of the pet market runs to 57 trillion won in the US and 15 trillion won in Japan, both on the increase even in the recent economic crisis without atrophy.

Accordingly, there are so many startups-to-be who want to open a pet café or a pet goods shop but it is not felt easy because this kind of business is considered operable by specialists only. However, ‘Gangyang2’, a pet goods circulation brand operating 40 shops around the country, is catching attention from startups-to-be because it is possible to operate easily without special expertise with relatively small investment expenses.

The biggest characteristic of Gangyang2 is that possessing 5000 kinds of products, domestically the largest size, one-stop shopping is possible from feed to snack, nutrient, bathing, beauty, sanitation, defecation, fashion and training goods. The company is supplying stable and competitive goods in partnership with domestic and foreign leading brands, such as Premium edge, Nutra gold holistic, United pets, Tunnel pet, Smarty cat, Taste of the wild, Chicken soup, Nutra nuggets, Rogues, Charming pet, Checkup, Bright bite, Cat choice, Pumback, etc.

President Kim Won-cheol said, “Pets have become inseparable from our life. So much it has become important to choose a healthy and nutritious, safe and useful products. Regarding pets as a dear life and family, we are doing our best to have them enjoy a healthy and happy life.”

Leads to a successful startup with specialized management system
Growth of Gangyang2 has been based on the systematic distribution network possessed by its mother company Interpet Korea, longtime knowhow, and expertise on pets and deep love for them. President Kim Won-cheol, who majored in veterinary science and has engaged in pet industry for over 30 years, explained, “After dealing in pet-related products for a long time, I came to open my own shop in the hope of approaching customers more closely in accordance with the changing market. We are receiving lots of good response basically because we can provide good products at much lower prices without intermediate process of circulation.”

Interpet Korea, which initially had been running shops through direct investment, recently transferred company-operated stores to membership and subscribed additional members, starting a franchise business earnestly. In the franchise exposition last March, they introduced Gangyang2 for the first time drawing attention from startups-to-be. It demonstrated excellent competitiveness in that initial expenses of investment is relatively low because there is no big interior design needed, easily operable under a thorough education from the head office even there is no experience of keeping a pet, and that over 40% profit on the average is possible.

Above all, it has piled up rich field experience from the pet goods corner of E-Mart, Costco Hall, Lotte Mart, etc. Interpet Korea is different from ordinary franchises because it can provide the shop’s operative management, marketing knowhow and products in understanding customers’ needs accurately. Besides, the company has simplified sales, stock management and ordering business by building and operating POS system for all branches and provides diverse services including saving points using customer management system to maximize customer satisfaction. President Kim explained, ‘Based on our own logistic system led by the head office, we are having a franchise supervisor provide specialized management from choosing products to sales. We present not only local commercial rights but also the form of membership model suited for the shop location not to mention sharing information and giving trainings for active sales.” Besides, Interpet Korea is preparing the basis for creating stable profits by carrying on with diverse events and promotions which are difficult for individual shops.

President Kim hinted that Interprt Korea is proceeding with procedures for launch overseas. The company already started exports to Hong Kong last year, and from the latter part of this year, he is going to add fresh fuel to finding markets overseas while operating 300 shops of Gangyang2 in the nation. He emphasized, “The prime mover of operating an enterprise is ‘persons.’ While providing an opportunity for successful startup for more people, I am planning to contribute to creating jobs by expanding work personnel. My first and foremost aim is to make a company which builds up together with the staff and members.” Interpet Korea is showing prominent growth based on a long experience, knowhow and differentiated system in the pet market which is growing fast with numerous companies competing one another. Let’s take note of how they will move with their dream of a global enterprise.
