Jeon Byeong-tae, Professor of Medical College at Konkuk University / Director of Konkuk University's Deer Antlers Research Institute / Chairman of Korean Society of Antler Science / Technical Advisor of JBT
Revealing secrets of nutritions of deer antlers
Konkuk-Nokyong (antlers), creating a sensation in the market

Miraculous food that contain 40 kinds of adaptogens
Introducing world's first quality evaluation standard

Known as one of the best medicines, antlers are made of dear antlers such as spotted deer, red & green deer and elk. Deers grow new antlers every year. Three to five months old antlers are normally what we call Velvet Antler and eight to nine month old antlers are called Hard Antler. Antlers are adaptogens that contain 40 kinds of substance that are needed for our body. 'Glycosaminoglycan' for example, prevents aging of the joints and 'lecithin' prevents arthritis and neuropathy. However, the effect of antlers is only revealed recently by systematic research. Professor Jeon majored in stock breeding at Konkuk University, obtained a master's degree from the same university, and a PhD from Tohoku University in Japan. He then started to work as a professor at Konkuk University and as the head of the farm belonged to the university from 1985. There were about 60 to 70 deers in the farm but the managers did not even know how much fodder they need to feed that much number of deers. Jeon then tried to find references but without a result as there was not a single paper regarding to the field. This prompted Jeon to devote himself to researching on deers and antlers.
After years of research, Jeon set up 'quality evaluation standard of antlers' for the first time in the world and has so far published 140 related papers (52 of SCI level). He established Konkuk University's Deer Antlers Research Institute in 2001 and started to develop related products by using Korean antlers. As Honorary President of Changchun Science & Technology Academy in China, he also established Korean & Chinese Animals Research Institute. In addition, he established Korean Society of Antler Science and is holding seminars and symposiums in order to work in cooperation with related organizations in New Zealand and the US where researches on antlers are increasing.

Containing various nutrition including Glycosaminoglycan and ganglioside
Establishing an effective standard that can speak for quality of antlers

Jeon says "Koreans have eaten antlers for thousands of years but did not know what substance and effect they have. My goal is to research and reveal those through Konkuk University's Deer Antlers Research Institute and Korean Society of Antler Science." He added "antlers contain various nutrition including 'glycosaminoglycan', 'lecithin', 'fleamine' which promotes growth of mammal's cells, and 'proteoglycan' which activates anticomplement in the elastic immune system of arthritis. These substance help protect and reproduce joints and cartilages and maintain homeostasis in our body. Ganglioside, which also is in breast milk, deters aging of brain cells and promotes learning ability.
Jeon says "there's still a long way to go. Antlers related products are not even standardized and there cannot be an index substance that can classify the grade of each substance among tens of them only based on its amount of content. The grade systems used in other countries are based on size and weight rather than contents. Therefore, it is urgent to establish an effective standard."

Konkuk-Nokyong proven as trustworthy and popular antlers
Winning '2013 Asia LOHAS' in the bio-medical sector with 'Joints Love 1000'

Because there is not a set standard, consumers have to rely on the popularity of providers. The reason Jeon and the institute introduced the brand Konkuk-Nokyong (www.hanokwon.com) is because they wanted to suggest a standard for 'trustworthy products' to consumers.

As the top authority of antlers in the world, Jeon controls all the procedures of making Konkuk-Nokyong through strict food handling and management from collection to farm environment so that consumers can effectively intake all the good nutritions it contains. The products include 'Konkuk-Nokyong Goingbuzzang', 'Konkuk-Nokyong hi', 'Baeksego Gold 20', 'Baeksego 12' and 'Gwanjolsarang 100'.

'Gwanjolsarang 100' in particular is developed by the institute and Professor Kim Jeong-moon Team of Rehabilitation Medical Treatment of affiliated hospital of Konkuk University. They strengthened effect by combing antlers with MSM which helps ease joint inflammation and reproduce cartilages. It is recognized as a functional raw material that helps joint's function by Korean Food and Drug Administration after a clinical test and won '2013 Asia LOHAS' in the bio-medical sector.

"Government level support and investment are needed for research on antlers"
Winning 2010 Minister prize of the Ministry of Education and Science Technology

Jeon says "Korean ginseng is now very popular thanks to the government support through establishing Korea Ginseng & Tobacco Research Institute and investment in R&D. If they support for Korean antlers as much as they did for Korean ginseng, we are sure we can create another representative Korean health food brand in the world."

Jeon received 2010 Minister prize of the Ministry of Education and Science Technology for his contribution to 2010 SMEs Technical Innovation. Also, Korean Society of Antler Science (Chairman Jeon Byeong-tae) held a symposium last April under the title of 'Building a New Paradigm for Development of Antlers Industry' and suggested a road map.
