새로운 모성의 패러다임이 만든 산모 교육프로그램

레시피대로 따라하면 ‘백주부’ 못지않은 실력발휘를 할 수 있는 요리와 달리, 모유수유는 인터넷 시대의 예비엄마들을 힘들게 만드는 요소이다. 아무리 이론이 확실하다 한들, 개개인의 신체적 상황이나 환경 차이로 아무 도움이 되지 않는 경우가 많기 때문이다. 수유/육아 프로들이 모여 엄마들에게 올바른 노하우를 전수하는 브레인 브랜드인 맘스리베의 송은영 대표로부터 그 대안과 전문 모유육아서비스의 미래를 점검해 보았다.

현대의 엄마들을 모유수유 전문가로 만들어주는 맘스리베
맘스리베가 태동한 계기는 각각 독립된 사업체를 가진 한국모유육아협동조합이다. 2014년 3월 설립된 조합에서 같은 모유육아상담실 원장들이 모여, 광고와 홍보를 함께하고 동종업계 전문가들의 시너지를 발휘하자는 차원에서 통합 브랜드 ‘맘스리베’를 만든 것이다. 맘스리베 대표이기도 한 송은영 이사장은 “출장형식이 대부분인 이 업계에서 공식적으로 합법적인 사업을 하며, 프랜차이즈의 문제는 없애고 소비자들에게 신뢰를 주고자 했다. 국내 최고의 모유수유 전문가 그룹들이 모였기에 조합원들의 갑을관계 없이 평등하게 의견을 낼 수 있다는 것이 중요하다”고 말한다. 모유수유에 대해 모르는 사람은 없지만, 어떻게 해야 모유수유를 성공하는지 정답을 아는 사람은 없다. 송 이사장은 그 이유를 이렇게 말한다. “교육이란 다음 세대에게 무엇을 해야 하는지 가르쳐 주는 것이다. 예전에는 생활 속에서 같은 성별의 연장자에게 배웠다. 그런데 산업사회에 들어서면서 여성은 자기 딸이 육아 살림보다는 사회생활을 하길 원했고, 그들은 공부를 하여 직업을 가진 상태에서 갑작스럽게 임신으로 엄마가 된다. 그래서 육아에 대한 지식과 교육을 받은 기성세대와 달리, 아기를 맞이하며 크게 당황한다. 요리와 가사는 다른 이가 대신할 수 있지만, 모유수유는 전문가일지라도 대체가 안 된다. 엄마인 자기가 직접 해야 한다” 그래서 송 이사장은 ‘엄마란 태생적으로 완성되는 것이 아니라, 방법을 교육받아야 하는 존재’라는 발상으로 과학적이고 개개인의 필요에 맞춘 모유수유와 양육법을 가르치고 있다. 서울아산병원 신생아실 수간호사 경력을 가진 송 이사장을 비롯한 맘스리베의 전국 43개 지역 전문가들은 모두 산부인과, 신생아실 근무 경력이 있는 조산사, 간호사 출신이다. 맘스리베전문가들은 해부학, 생리학, 과학적인 이론에 바탕을 두고, 그들의 전문가적인 경험과 노하우를 엄마들이 딸이나 며느리에게 1대 1로 가르치던 수유방법을 아이를 키우는 방법과 융합해 가르쳐 좋은 반응을 얻고 있다. 

오케타니 무통이론과 산모가족이 함께하는 프로그램으로 큰 호응
맘스리베에서 주목할 만한 이론은 일본 조산사가 만든 동양 엄마들에게 적합한 오케타니 이론을 접목했다는 점이다. 맘스리베의 원장들은 의사, 간호사들이 따는 국제모유수유전문가(IBCLC) 과정의 자격증을 지녔을 뿐 아니라 모두 오케타니아카데미의 무통유방관리 정규과정을 이수한 오케타니 전문가라고 전하는 송이사장은 “오케타니 이론은 엄마의 유방 상태를 반영하여 더욱 신뢰를 얻는다. 예전의 엄마들은 밭일과 가사일을 병행해 운동부족이 드물었는데, 요즘 엄마들은 브래지어를 하고, 앉아서 일하는 직종을 많이 갖는다. 그러다 보니 모유의 양이 줄고, 유방의 기능도 저하되었다. 그래서 기능을 높이고 수유에 좋도록 모양을 교정하는 것이 오케타니 방식이다” 라고 덧붙인다. 이러한 오케타니 이론에 경험론적인 상식이 대부분인 예전 방식의 단점은 빼고, 전문가들의 지식을 덧붙여 엄마들에게 교육한다. “사회가 바뀌어가면서 아빠도 양육에 참여하는 분위기에 공감하고 있다. 그래서 남편 뿐 아니라 양가 부모님에 대한 교육도 진행한다. 육아에 참여하는 것은 의무이자 권리라고 생각한다. 산모들을 교육차 직접 만나다 보면 육아의 패러다임이 바뀌고 있는데 의외로 정부 정책이 거기에 못 따라간다는 것을 알게 된다. 그래서 고객들의 니즈에 따라 교육 프로그램을 만들고 진행한다” 맘스리베는 1-2년에 걸쳐 모유수유 방법, 유방 관리, 육아 방법, 아이 케어, 이유식 만들고 먹이는 법을 교육한다. 출산 전도 가능하고, 출산 2년차까지 교육을 하기도 한다. 이 과정에서 유명 뮤지컬 배우인 홍지민 씨가 출산 후 맘스리베에서 남편과 교육을 받아 순조로운 모유수유 과정을 보여주며 큰 화제를 모으기도 했다.

모유의 중요성과 모유수유의 올바른 지식을 널리 전하고파
송 이사장은 맘스리베의 모유육아상담실에서 앞으로도 자연주의 모유육아 및 엄마와 아기가 교감하는 프로그램 위주로 진행하는 초기 방침을 유지할 것이라고 한다. 모유수유에서 가장 필요한 점은 엄마가 모유수유의 필요성을 깨닫는 점이라고 한다. “유독 사람만이 소의 모유인 우유로 아이를 키우려 한다. 사람은 사람의 모유를 먹고 자라야 한다. 영양학적으로도 모유는 인간에게 더욱 적합하고 월등한 영양소를 함유하고 있다. 면역력 발달, 정서적인 영향의 중요성은 잘 알려져 있다. 그리고 아이가 이 세상에 나와서 살 수 있도록 도와주는 엄마 몸의 방어물질들이 모유에도 들어간다. 그런데 모유가 잘 나오지 않아 아기가 모유를 잘 먹지 못하고 엄마가 유방통증이 심할 때 등, 모유수유 중에 문제가 있을 때 맘스리베가 엄마와 아기를 돕는 것이다” 협동조합 이사장이자, 대표로 맘스리베를 이끌고 있는 송 이사장은은 “아직 개개인이 모인 협동조합이기 때문에 개인의 경험과 우리나라 아기와 엄마의 요구에 맞는 이론을 통일화하고, 전문가의 입장에서 메뉴와 프로토콜을 더 정비해야 한다고 본다. 그리고 맘스리베의 이론이나 경험적 전문지식을 체계화해 정리하고 책을 낼 생각이다. 인터넷, SNS에 그 내용을 공유하여 많은 엄마들에게 우리의 비법을 쉽게 알려주고 싶기 때문이다” 모유수유는 흔히 말하는 ‘젖몸살’을 일으켜 사회활동을 방해하고 엄마의 육체에 고통을 준다는 인식 내지는 누명을 쓰고 있다. 그래서 송 이사장은 모유수유가 어렵지 않고, 약간의 노력으로도 충분히 모유수유에 성공할 수 있음을 알려 사회적인 공감대 형성과 인식 전환을 하고자 한다. 송 이사장은 모유수유는 ‘고통’이 아니라 엄마와 아기와의 교감, 가족의 유대감 강화에 기여한다고 다시금 강조했다. 전문가의 전문 서비스와 함께 모유수유율을 높여 가족의 근본적 행복을 추구하려는 맘스리베 전문가들의 노력 덕분에 국내의 모유수유 붐은 벌써 한 발짝 가까이 다가오는 듯하다.

Unlike cooking fully capable by following the recipe, breast-feeding is hard for mothers-to-be living in the Internet age. Even with a credible theory, they can find it useless because of the difference in each one’s physical condition or environment. Mamslibe is a brain brand for delivering the right knowhow to mothers by a team of specialists in nursing babies. We met its president Song Eun-young to hear their expertise and the future of professional breastfeeding nursing service. 

Mamslibe which makes modern mothers a specialist in breastfeeding  
Mamslibe originates in Korea Breastfeeding Nursing Cooperative which comprises independent enterprises. From the cooperative established in March 2014, presidents of the same nursing consultation room gathered to make an integrated brand ‘Mamslibe’ in an effort to work together on advertising and promotion and exert synergy effect from specialists in the same industry. Song Eun-young, president of Mamslibe, said, “This industry is mostly in the form of a business trip but we decided to run an officially legal business and give confidence to customers without the problem of franchise. It matters that we can give voice in equality without boss-subordinate relationship among union members since it is the group of the country’s top-class specialists in breastfeeding.” Everybody knows what breast-feeding means but almost nobody knows how to breastfeed  successfully. President Song explains why: “Education is teaching what to do to the next generation. In the past, we learned it in life from our seniors of the same sex. But as we have entered an industrial society, women come to want their daughter to make a career rather than to nurse a baby, and accordingly they make study and have an occupation until becoming a mother by a sudden pregnancy.

So unlike the existing generation who used to have knowledge and education about childcare, they are greatly perplexed to have a baby. Though cooking and housework can be done by proxy, nursing a baby cannot be performed by another who is an expert. It should be done by the mother herself.” So president Song is teaching scientific and customized breast-feeding and childcare in the belief that ‘a mother is perfected not by nature but by education she receives on how to become one.” President Song has experience as a head nurse at Seoul Asan Hospital nursery and specialists from 43 regions of the whole country are all former midwives or nurses who have experienced working at obstetrics or nursery. Based on scientific theories of anatomy, physiology, etc. Mamslibe specialists are receiving a good response by teaching their professional experience and knowhow in combination with traditional one-to-one nursing method delivered from mother to daughter or daughter-in-law and their way for childcare.

What is notable about Mamslibe is the theory of combining Oketani theory made by a Japanese midwife to suit Oriental mothers. All of Mamslibe presidents have a certificate of International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) intended for doctors and nurses and are also Oketani experts who have completed the regular course of Oketani Academy’s painless breast care. President Song added, “Oketani theory earns more confidence by reflecting the mother’s condition of breasts. While most mothers in the past knew no lack of exercise by combining farm work and housework, these days they have a sedentary occupation wearing a brassiere. This has made less amount of mother’s milk and lowered the function of breasts. It is the Oketani method to enhance the function and correct the breast shape for good nursing.” To this Oketani method, they add by teaching mothers specialists’ knowledge except the drawbacks of the past method which was mostly experiential common sense. 

“With change of society, fathers are also identifying with the atmosphere of participating in childcare. So we carry out instruction for not only husband but also parents from both families. I think participating in childcare is both duty and right. When meeting mothers in childbed for instruction, we see that the paradigm for childcare is changing but the government’s policy is falling behind. So we set and proceed with an instruction program following the needs of customers.” Mamslibe teaches how to breastfeed, breast care, nursing, childcare, and making and feeding baby food for one or two years. This training is possible before childbirth and even to the second year after childbirth. In this course, Hong Ji-man, a famous musical actress, showed her way of breastfeeding while receiving instruction from Mamslibe, which drew keen attention. 
Wants to publicize the importance of mother’s milk and right knowledge of breastfeeding 
President Song says that at Mamslibe’s nursing consultation room she will keep up the initial policy of carrying out the naturalist breastfeeding and the program of sympathy between mother and baby. She says it is most needed about nursing for mothers to realize the necessity of breastfeeding. “Only human being tries to nurse a baby with cow’s milk. Humans need to grow up by eating their own mother’s milk. Nutritionally, too, mother’s milk is more suited for humans containing superior nutriments. It is well-known that mother’s milk is important for immunity and emotional influence. And defensive substances in mother’s body comes into her milk which helps a baby to survive after coming into the world. Mamslibe helps mother and baby when there is a problem in breastfeeding such as a baby cannot eat mother’s milk because it fails to come out well or mother feels a severe pain in the breast.” President Song, president of the cooperative and head of Mamslibe, says, “Since we are still a cooperative in a gathering of each person, we need to unify personal experiences and theory suited for our country’s babies and mothers and further improve the menu and protocol from the standpoint of specialists. I am also going to publish a book after putting systematically in order Mamslibe’s theory or experiential expertise. I want to inform many mothers with our recipes easily by having them share the content through the Internet and SNS.” Breastfeeding is understood or misunderstood to interrupt social activity by creating what is called ‘mastitis’ and give pain to mother’s body. So president Song wants to form a social consensus and change the perception by telling that breastfeeding is not difficult and can be successful with only a little effort. President Song once again emphasized that breastfeeding is not a ‘pain’ but contributes to sympathy between mother and baby and strengthening the family bond. With Mamslibe specialists’ efforts to seek for a family’s fundamental happiness by raising the ratio of breastfeeding with professional service, we seem to see the boom of breastfeeding coming much nearer to us.
