스크린야구가 체감형 가상스포츠의 장기흥행을 선도한다
시장규모 1천억 원 시장의 야구에 새로운 산업 아이템이 등장해 화제다. 스크린스포츠 중 현재 2번째 인지도와 무궁무진한 시장성으로 주목받는 스크린야구란, 서울과 부산을 중심으로 인기를 얻어온 ‘500원 야구장’ 스타일의 배팅하는 즐거움, 스크린골프처럼 자신의 실력을 데이터화하여 점검하고 원하는 코스를 고르는 장점이 결합된 새로운 IT형 스포츠레저이다. 실내 야구장에서는 타격만 가능하지만, 스크린야구에서는 타구 시뮬레이션과 쳐서 날아가는 공의 구속과 변화, 변화구 옵션 및 타율과 장타율 점수 확인, 능력에 따라 레벨을 고르는 경우의 수를 구비하고 있다. 메이저리그 선수들을 곁에서 지켜본 유명 스포츠 에이전트 출신인 서동규 대표는 미국 야구 클럽에서 디지털 장비를 이용해 선수들이 훈련하는 것에 착안, 이 장비를 한국에서 야구 게임을 하는 레저용으로 들여와 사업화하는 아이디어를 냈다. “이승엽 선수가 지바롯데에 입단할 때 바비 발렌타인 감독이 기계를 개발한 미국에서 사들여 일본에서 연습한 것으로도 유명하다. 일본 지바롯데에서 구매한 메이저머신은 당시 우리 돈으로 1대당 1억 3천만 원 선이라 부담스러웠지만 가격대가 절반으로 떨어지면서 사업화를 생각하게 됐다. 현재 우리나라의 피칭머신 수준은 높지 않다. 선수들이 연습할 때 투수 대역으로 던져주는 기계조차 거의 수입품이다. 괜찮은 제품이 국산화되는데 성공했다고는 하지만 상품화의 시행착오가 있어서 몇 년 더 걸릴 것이다. 현재 우리가 보유한 기기들은 세계 최고 수준을 자랑한다. 일본에서조차 카피가 불가능한 제품들이다.” 
SK와이번스를 비롯해 루키급에서 초중고 엘리트, 프로 선수들이 몸을 풀기 위해 찾기도 하며, 비공식적으로 5만 개를 기록하는 국내의 야구 동호회 및 클럽에서 먼 거리임에도 찾아와 타격연습용으로 이용하는 덕분에 현재 1년 만 운영해도 창업자금을 충분히 메울 수 있을 정도라고 서 대표는 덧붙인다. 가맹점의 손익분기점은 1억 5천에서 2억 수준이고, 기계를 3-4대 들여 운영할 수 있다. 프랜차이즈 요식업보다 창업비용이 비교적 적으면서 유동성이 있다. 프로머신만으로 운영한다면 1억 이내에서도 창업이 가능하다고 한다. 시스템 업그레이드가 잦고 2D에서 4D까지 소프트웨어를 구동할 실내 하드웨어에도 막대한 업그레이드 비용이 요구되는 스크린골프와 달리, 초기비용으로서 한번 장비를 갖추면 소모품인 알루미늄 야구 배트 교체비용을 제외하고 운영비용 부담이 적은 사업이다. 또한 2년 5개월 동안 운영함에도 고장과 사고가 없었기에 가족, 친구 단위 스포츠레저로서 손색이 없다는 점도 장점이다. 

RSB스크린야구의 독창성과 상권보호 노하우로 승부한다
“스크린야구의 시장성에 자신이 있는 이유는 두 가지 장점 때문이다” 서 대표는 우선 메이저머신과 프로머신, 타구 시물레이터로 운영되며 개인 실력에 따라 고르는 타격연습이 가능한 메이저머신, 일반적인 직구 위주로 된 프로머신 및 메이저리그 프로 선수들의 훈련을 위해 만든 피칭머신을 결합해 다양한 옵션을 구현하는 장점을 소개했다. 메이저머신은 시속 64 61-161km의 직구, 9가지 변화구를 구현하며 서 대표가 타사와 차별화된 국내 최초 스크린야구 사업체로서의 장점을 담은 타격시뮬레이터인 히트트랙스의 측정각도로 고객들의 전문성에 대한 열망을 충족시킨다. “내가 친 공이 아웃인지 아닌지, 그리고 타율과 비거리는 물론 타구의 스피드도 나온다. 팀을 나누어 게임도 할 수 있고, 개인전으로 게임을 할 수도 있다. 히트트랙스는 프로머신과 호환 조합해 놓았다. 다저스, 샌프란시스코 등 20군데 경기장 중에서 원하는 곳을 고를 수 있다. 흔히 타스크린야구장에서 사용하는 센서 2개로만 된 것과 달리, 넓은 시야각을 확보한 카메라 3대가 홈플레이트 앞에 떨어지는 파울볼과 번트까지 잡아낸다. 체감형 가상스포츠 시뮬레이션으로서 더할 나위 없다”

또한 스크린 스포츠 연관콘텐츠에서 야구 종목이 향후 5년간 산업규모를 확대하는 정부, 문화체육관광부 정책의 수혜업종이 될 것으로 전망되며, 그러한 상황에서 스크린골프 산업에서 벤치마킹하여 가맹점들의 수익을 극대화 할 사항도 준비되어 있다. “메이저머신은 대당 반경 3km, 프로머신은 반경 2km씩의 전용 상권을 유지해준다. 네이버 지도의 위치 직경으로 환산하기 때문에 영업장의 상권을 보호하며 겹치면 가맹을 내주지 않는 식으로 관리한다. 그래서 인덕원, 역삼, 목동점은 간판도 없는데 야구매니아들이 알아서 잘 찾아와 주신다. 주말에는 새벽 2시까지 하는데도 아침부터 밤까지 예약이 꽉 찬다. 팀이나 그룹 단위로 예약하기 때문이다. 15회 공을 던지는데 3천원, 기기당 1시간 9만 원 이상의 수익을 보장한다. 그래서 인천과 대구를 포함해 5개 매장이 운영되고, 먼 곳에서부터 찾아오는 야구팬들의 니즈를 반영해 올해 전국 20개 매장을 낼 예정으로 상담 중이다. 마케팅의 공동 지원도 해주고 있다.” 

야구는 인천에만 1천 개, 남양주에 1,200개 아마추어 팀이 있는데다 대중성, 지역연고, 가족 단위의 팬, 여성 팬을 고루 지닌 인기스포츠이기에 서 대표는 앞으로 국내 펀딩을 받아 직영점을 늘리고 전국 규모로 사랑받을 사업규모를 예상한다. “아시아 독점권을 가졌기 때문에 일본, 중국에서도 문의가 온다. RSB배 전국 스크린야구대회를 예선, 본선을 거쳐 자체 이벤트식으로 진행할 계획도 있다. 미국에서는 기계로 연습만 하지 사업 아이템으로 생각하지 않아서인지 교포분들의 문의도 있고, 오히려 우리가 역으로 미국에 진출할 수도 있는 것이다” 서 대표는 스크린야구업계를 선도하는 입장에서, 스크린스포츠와 같은 공간이 건강하고 건전한 장소가 되어야 함에도 주류판매등 유흥의 장소로 변질되는 것을 걱정하고 있으며, 레저스포츠로서의 가치를 법적으로도 인정받기를 바란다고 한다. 특히 야구는 골프와 달리 어린이, 청소년들도 좋아하는 국민 스포츠임인 만큼 하루빨리 스크린야구도 스포츠시설업에 포함 되어야 하며, 정부의 관리와 기준이 있어야 한다고 강조한다. 이렇듯 체계적인 사업계획과 관리 노하우, 긍정적인 가능성을 보유한 RSB가 가맹점으로 순풍을 타고 스포츠문화를 선도하게 될 날이 머지않았다.

Screen baseball, leading the promising virtual reality sports
The market value of screen sports is worth $100M. Among them, screen baseball is ranked in second place and is becoming a highly promising field. It is a new IT type sports & leisure as it realizes the sense of real batting and datafying one's capability to suggest one's ideal courses. While only batting is possible in an indoor baseball house, you can feel a real sense of batting, the speed and patterns of balls and batting average through simulation in a virtual reality baseball house. Seo used to be a sports agent who watched major league players close by. He got inspired from the players practicing by using digital machines in baseball clubs and planned to popularize it as a game for leisure in Korea. Seo says "Lee Seung-Yeop (Chiba Lotte Marines, Japan) was famous for training with the practice machine developed by Bobby Valentine. When the Chiba Lotte Marines bought the machine, it was around $120,000 but the price dropped by half and I thought it possible to use it for my business. The quality of pitching machine in Korea is not that good at the moment. Most automatic pitcher machines are from abroad. It will take some time for Korean-made machines to be commercialized. But I can say that the machines we have are top quality ones. Even Japan can't copy these machines.' 

Currently, Screen Baseball is being visited by SK Wyverns, rookies, student elites, professionals, baseball circles and clubs who recorded 50,000 (unofficial). Thanks to these customers nationwide, Screen Baseball has already made profits more than its initial investment capital within a year. The break-even point of an affiliated store is between $150,000 and $200,000 and it can be run with 3 machines. The initial capital is relatively less than food franchise and you can even open a branch with $100,000 if you are to run it with a pro-machine. While screen golf requires constant upgrade covering from 2D to 4D with much upgrading cost, you do not need to spend further operation expenses once you facilitated machines except the cost for changing old aluminum bats with new ones. Also, there has been not a single safety accident for the last two and a half years so people can enjoy without worry about injuries. 

Competing by creativity and management know-how
Seo is confident with his business. The advantage of RSB Screen Baseball is that Major Machine, which is good for batting practice, Pro-Machine, mainly focused on a fast ball, and 'Pitching Machine' designed for training professional players, are all combined together to realize various playing options. Major Machine realizes a fast ball of 161km with 9 breaking balls. Also, the batting simulator Hit Track's measurement angle is satisfying the customers' needs to achieve perfection. Seo says "you can check whether your ball is out or not as well as your batting average and speed. You can team play or play alone. Hit Tracks is compatible with Pro-Machine. You can choose one of 20 stadiums including LA Dodgers and San Francisco. Unlike 2-censored cameras used in other places, you can be benefited from 3-censored cameras to catch even a foul ball and bunt. It truly is an ideal virtual reality simulation."

As screen baseball is expected to be benefited from government's 5 year expansion plan of sports-related contents, screen golf is likely to benchmark screen baseball which will increase the profits of each affiliated store. Seo says "Major Machine guarantees an exclusive commercial rights by keeping 3km radius and Pro-Machine by 2kim radius per machine. For this reason, each branch in Indeogwon, Yeoksam and Mok-dong has their own share of profits. Stores open until 2 a.m. on weekends and reservation usually gets full from morning to night as people often reserve as a team or group. One machine for a one hour use brings you a profit more than $90 and 15 times of throwing brings you a profit of $3. Five branches are currently run nationwide including Incheon and Daegu and I plan to open 20 branches within the year. For this, we are carrying out a business consultation and marketing support." There are 1,000 amateur baseball teams in Incheon and 1,200 in Namyangju only and this figure shows a greater growth potential of screen baseball. Seo says "we have exclusive right in Asia and I often get a phone call from China and Japan. I also plan to hold RSB National Screen Baseball Competition (tentative title). The machine is only used for practice purpose in the US which means that we can re-export the business to the US." Meanwhile, Seo shows a concern about the fact that the space of screen sports are often used as the place for alcohol and adult entertainment. For this, Seo emphasized that relevant regulations should be introduced so that the place can be for people from all age groups.
