[Cover Story] Master embroiderer Yu Hee-soon (nickname: Su Hyun-jae)
Spreading the beauty of traditional Korean embroidery to the world
Walking a single path as an embroiderer for 39 years

The beauty of delicate hands that represents Korea
We often say 'like embroidery' to express when something is really beautiful. Embroidery shows its beauty through a variety of colors of threads to form a pattern on the fabric. Starting with civilization, embroidery has built its unique style according to a region, religion and culture and Korean embroidery also expressed our esthetic preference and value through the changes of the times. A stitch after stitch slowly creates a pattern that contains national sentiment. Introducing is the master embroiderer of Korea Yu Hee-soon who is succeeding our traditional embroidery through her unique style.

Yu has been walking a single path as an embroiderer for 39 years and was chosen as 'Embroidery Master of Korea (No.345)' in 2002. She received numerous prizes including 'The 8th Korea Handcraft Competition' 14 times since 1983, 'Labor Culture Festival' in the handcraft sector (grand prize) in 1985, and 'New Fine Arts Competition' in the handcraft sector (grand prize) in 1997. She was also chosen for 'Korean Millenium Product' in 2000, '100 Excellent Handcraft Product' and received the prize from the Minister of Trade, Industry & Energy. She served as an expert member in the fabric handcraft sector of National Competency Standards and participated in a national promotion ad made by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism with her embroidery, and as a result, she contributed to spread national status. Yu made shawl and sitting cushion with the name of Queen Elizabeth II embroidered in Korean when she visited Korean in 1999 and also made Irworobongdo which decorated background of the chair in APEC Summit Busan 2005. Sized by 624cm in width, 348cm in length with 12kg of silk thread, Irworobongdo contains the sun, the moon, five peaks, pine tree and fall and it symbolizes the dignity of Chosun Dynasty. Yu made it with 18 of her pupils for two months and she received a citation from the Prime Minster for her effort. Yu also participated in 'The 4th Seal of State' in 2007 and made naham cloth, seok and pouch and it was praised as 'work of master craftsmen' and 'complete of traditional art and essence of traditional handcraft'. Yu also received a citation from the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs.

Fostering talented people to pass down traditional Korean embroidery
Yu started embroidery as a pupil of the first chief director of Korea Embroidery Association Kim Tae-sook in 1976. Yu learned from Kim for 4 years and inspired by the work 'Sugwaebul' of Han Sang-su (important intangible cultural asset No.80) who received the presidential prize at Korea Handcraft Competition in 1981. Yu then learned under the instruction of Han for many years and mastered both oriental embroidery and traditional Korean embroidery. Yu soon produced her delicate and in-depth works. Yu served as the head professor of Traditional Embroidery Department at Dongguk University's Lifelong Education Center in March 1998 and from then on started to foster talented students. Without a stop of her lecture, Yu has produced more than 200 pupils for 18 years. Yu says "I sometimes worked more than 16 hours a day because I was passionate in spreading our traditional embroidery and passing down my skills to generations to come and that was my driving force."

Meanwhile, Korean embroidery is at risk as cheap Chinese and Vietnamese ones are surging into the market. Yu is worried that whether Korean embroidery is getting forgotten by our own people. For this, Yu is currently working with her pupils on recovering the works of our traditional embroidery. 'Recovery & Application of Traditional Embroidery Exhibition' is scheduled to be held between 29 June and 9 July at the third floor of Center for Training in Important Intangible Cultural Properties. It is a real meaningful exhibition for Yu. She says "there is no better thing than embroidery for me and this passion made me to be where I am now. Embroidery is an art of honesty, patience and beauty. One thread is one sweat to create one straight line and the curves requires tens of sweats. The patience to create this beauty is truly a noble work and I was born for this."
