탁월한 기술력과 전문성으로 국산 첨단로봇의 시대를 열다

20세기 들어 사람보다 강한 힘을 낼 수 있는 동력 장치가 개발되고 금속 가공 기술이 발달하면서 사람 대신 일을 하는 산업용 로봇이 처음 등장했다. 특히 1961년 제너럴모터스(GM)의 생산라인에 산업용 로봇이 투입된 이래 강한 힘과 정확성을 바탕으로 어렵고 위험한 작업을 해내는 로봇의 효율성은 크게 주목받기 시작했다. 그리고 현재, 전 세계 산업용 로봇시장은 약 85억 달러, 한화로 9조 4,282억 원에 달할 정도로 크게 성장했다. 로봇에 의해 산업계가 재편되고 있는 것이다.

국내 최고의 기술력으로 세계에 도전하다
최근 인터넷 검색 서비스 제공업체인 구글(Google)은 로봇회사 8개를 인수했다. 10년 뒤 새로운 성장동력이 바로 ‘로봇’이라는 판단에서다. 이미 많은 전문가들은 “스마트폰이 가져온 3차 산업혁명처럼 ‘로봇혁명’이 곧 올 것”이라고 전망하고 있다. 로봇은 이미 제조업과 의료, 우주 탐사까지 거의 모든 분야에서 핵심적인 역할을 맡고 있다. 지난 2014년 전 세계에서 판매된 22만 5,000여대의 로봇 중 우리나라는 3만 9,000대를 구입하며 세계 2위의 수입국으로 기록됐다. 또한 제조업 노동자 1만 명당 로봇 수를 뜻하는 ‘로봇 밀도’에서 한국은 세계 1위를 차지하며 ‘전 세계에서 산업용 로봇 활용도가 가장 높은 국가’로 꼽혔다. 하지만 국산 산업용 로봇의 국내 시장 점유율은 50%에 불과한 상황. 기술력을 포함한 전반적인 로봇 생태계가 일본이나 독일 등 선진국에 비해 미흡하기 때문이다. 그러나 취약한 국내 로봇업계 가운데서도 세계 수준에 버금가는 기술력으로 주목받고 있는 기업이 있다. 바로 ㈜로봇밸리다.

창원 국가산단에 위치한 로봇밸리는 자동차·중장비용 로봇을 비롯해 조선분야의 선체 블록 용접로봇, 비구면 렌즈 핸들링로봇, 도장로봇, 레이저를 이용한 비접촉식 용접비드 측정기 등 해외 수입에 의존했던 다양한 첨단 제조용 지능로봇을 국내 산업현장에 맞게 국산화함으로써 국내 로봇기술의 선두주자로 관련 기업의 주목을 받아왔다. 2000년 5월 창업 첫해부터 LG전자 PDP라인과 현대자동차 클릭라인에 로봇자동화 시스템을 공급하기 시작한 로봇밸리는 2002년에는 르노삼성자동차 로봇 도장라인 전담업체, 2003년에는 삼성중공업 조선용 용접로봇 공급업체로 선정되는 등 탁월한 기술력과 전문성을 인정받으며 성장의 발판을 마련했다. 

로봇밸리의 놀라운 성장의 바탕에는 ‘세계 최고의 기술력’을 목표로 삼고 있는 박명환 대표의 경영철학이 있다. 중소기업으로는 드물게 산업용 로봇을 개발하고 있는 로봇밸리는 전체 매출의 10% 이상을 연구개발에 투자하여 지금까지 수십여 가지의 로봇시스템을 개발해왔다. 또한 로봇 및 자동화 시스템 분야 30년 이상 경력의 최정예 엔지니어로 구성된 R&D센터를 운영하며 첨단기술연구와 개발에 총력을 기울이고 있다.

첨단로봇기술의 100년 기업을 목표로
1984년 성균관대 기계공학과 졸업 뒤 대우중공업 중앙연구소에서 로봇개발을 시작, 2000년 로봇밸리의 전신인 로봇이엔지를 설립하며 지금까지 30년 이상 로봇개발의 외길을 걸어온 박명환 대표는 국내에서도 손꼽히는 로봇 전문가로서 국내·외 국제 심포지엄이나 포럼 등의 주요 강연자로 초청받고 있기도 하다. 그는 “국내 로봇시장은 세계 2위 수준입니다. 오는 6월 개최되는 캘리포이나 국제로봇대회 참가팀 중 3분의 1 가량이 한국산 로봇 본체나 부품을 사용할 정도로 기술격차도 거의 없습니다. 문제는 로봇산업이 중소기업 위주로 펼쳐져 대기업 중심의 일본 등에 비해 세계시장 확보에 어려움이 있다는 점입니다”라고 지적했다. 이에 박 대표는 로봇밸리의 중장기적 목표를 ‘100년 이상 뻗어가는 로봇전문 기업’으로 세웠다. 오랫동안 축적한 개발 능력을 기반으로 로봇밸리를 경남과 우리나라, 나아가 세계적인 첨단 로봇기술기업으로 키우겠다는 포부다.

로봇밸리는 국내외적으로 인정받는 기술력만큼이나 인증 및 수상실적도 화려하다. 로봇 및 자동화 장비로 받은 ISO9001, QS9000 인증을 비롯해 ISO14001, 유망중소기업 선정, 경남과학기술대상 우수상, 마케팅파이오니어상 수상에 이어 기술혁신중소기업으로 이노비즈 인증, 우량기술기업 선정, 2008년 국내 최조 용접비드 측정기 “B-one”의 개발성공으로 NEP(New Excellent Product) 신제품 인증 및 조달청우수제품 등록, 지식경제부 로봇국가유공자 표창, 창원시 최고경영인상 수상 등 차세대 첨단 로봇분야를 이끌어갈 주목받는 기업으로 부상하고 있다. 또한 지식경제부가 기획한 2011년 중소제조업용 뿌리산업 공정간 로봇시범사업의 주관기업으로 선정되어 자동차·중장비 분야의 단조 및 용접용 로봇시스템을 경남 8개 기업에 적용해 생산성과 품질향상에 크게 기여했다는 평가를 받았다.

산업용 로봇은 사람이 수행하기 힘든 어렵고 위험한 공정에 유용하게 사용된다. 건설현장과 자동차 제조현장, 조선소 등 많은 인력이 투입되고 고된 작업이 많은 산업현장에서 로봇의 역할은 특히 중요하다. 박 대표는 “저희는 오랜 연구를 거쳐 축적한 기술과 경험을 바탕으로 첨단 제조용 지능로봇 기술을 개발하면서 동시에 고객의 요구에 맞는 최적의 로봇 시스템 공급을 위해 노력하고 있습니다. 또한 세계 유수의 로봇 기업들과 겨루기 위해 기술력을 지속적으로 업그레이드하는 데 힘쓰겠습니다”라고 밝혔다. 정부가 선정한 미래 먹거리 산업 가운데 하나인 ‘로봇산업’. 다양한 산업분야의 혁신을 이끌게 될 로봇혁명의 시대에 로봇밸리가 중추적인 역할을 하게 되기를 기대해본다.

Challenging the world with Korea's best technology
Recently, Google took over eight robot companies. Google sees the robot industry as a new growth engine after 10 years. Many specialists predict that we have had 'the third revolution' with smart phone and now the 'robot revolution' is impending. Robots already are taking the core role in almost every part of the industries including manufacturing, medicine and space exploration. 225,000 robots were sold worldwide in 2014 and Korea recorded as No.2 importer by buying 39,000 robots. Korea also ranked No.1 in 'robot density' (to indicate number of robots per 10,000 laborers) and became the country which has the highest rate of using industrial robots in the world. However, Korea's market share in the robot industry is only 50% and this is due to the weaker infrastructure we have when compared to Japan and Germany. But there is a Korean robot company which possesses a global level technology: Robot Valley. 

Located in Changwon Industrial Complex, Robot Valley localized the related robot technologies in cars, heavy equipment, shipbuilding, aspheric lens handling, painting and digital testing machine on weld zone. In this respect, we can say that Robot Valley is taking the initiative in leading the domestic robot industry. Robot Valley started to supply their robot automation system to LG Electronics PDP Line and Hyundai Motors Click Line since its establishment in May 2000. They were also appointed as exclusive company for Renaults Samsung's robot painting line in 2002 and a supplier of shipbuilding welding robot for Samsung Heavy Industries in 2003. 

Park's management philosophy played a great role to make this remarkable growth of Robot Valley. It is rare for a SME to develop industrial robots but Robot Valley is investing 10% of their total sales in R&D and has developed numerous robots so far. Thanks to their R&D center which is run by highly-skilled engineers who have more than 30 years of experience in the robot and automation system field.

Park majored in mechanical engineering at Sungkyunkwan University. After his graduation in 1984, he started to develop robots at Central Research Institute of Daewoo Heavy Industries and established Robot E&G (the predecessor of Robot Valley) in 2000. As Park is a robot specialist who has more than 30 years of experience in the field, he is currently being invited from various forums and symposiums home and abroad to give lectures. Park says "Korea's robot market ranked No.2 in the world. 1/3 of participants in California International Robot Competition in June this year will use Korean-made robot bodies or parts which proves that there's not much difference in the level of robot technology between Korean brands and foreign ones. The problem is that the robot industry is rather led by SMEs in Korea when compared, for example, to Japan which is mainly led by major companies. This means that we have some difficulty in securing the market."

For this, Park is determined to grow Robot Valley to be a global company that will last more than 100 years. With his 30 highly-skilled engineers, Park is achieving $5M to $10M yearly sales. They obtained ISO90001, QS9000, ISO14001, were chosen as Promising SME, won runner-up prize at Gyeongnam Science Technology Awards, received Marketing Pioneering Awards, obtained a certification of Inno-Biz, chosen as Outstanding Technology Enterprise, obtained a certification of B-one NEP (laser weld bead tester), registered as Public Procurement's Excellent Product, received a citation from the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy and won Changwon City CEO Awards. They were also chosen as the management company for Robot Pilot Project for Regional Industries and SMEs in 2011 and were praised for their contribution to improving productivity and quality of robot system in car, heavy equipment, forgery and welding by applying the system to eight companies in Gyeongnam. 

Industrial robots are useful for the process which people cannot do it with their hands. Park says "we are doing our best to provide the optimum robot system based on our accumulated R&D skills, technology, experience and know-how. We will keep upgrading our capability to compete with global robot companies."
