Since the modern industrial society started, basic science fields have brought a great leading innovation of scientific technology, so we could have a high-technological industrial society and the role has been getting more serious. Especially, securing source technology is that means a nation has competitiveness towards other countries and at the same time, it is a core academic area that can contribute for the human society in the world. The creative scientific talented of convergence with chemistry and biology business group at Changwon University is doing the best to meet the goal of training the talented who can be an original technology of creative studies for the future.
Bold try on fusion and convergence with biology and chemistry
The creative scientific talented of convergence with chemistry and biology business group at Changwon University (hereinafter, business group) is pursuing an academic relation between chemistry and biology, which are core fields in a natural science field, and this is why the team was established with having a goal of ‘Training creative scientific talented of convergence’. This business group put the separated departments, which were chemistry and biology departments in college, together and made it one for the first time in Korea and it is called Biology/Chemistry convergence department. On the other hand, they are developing high leveled compulsory major education and convergence subjects in order to suggest a new education model for raising talented researchers in science and technology.
Leader Lee Min-Ju who is in charge of the business group said, “We focused on switching organization structure and subjects during the first year. Since it is a big and new try on combining two departments that take up a big part in science and engineering field, we are doing the best to let it continue in study and support.” For that time being, the chemistry and biology departments have had a fruitful education and they showed a high entrance rate (25.4%) of a graduated school among the small/medium sized universities for last 20 years, which is rare. It says that Changwon University has educated and trained lots of high qualified talented people in that area. Also, recently, with an increasing interest in life science, the necessity of talented people with creative convergence in chemistry and biology is getting more in need.
Leader Lee Min-Ju explained, “The demand of professional people who have ability of using the knowledge under any circumstances effectively with having all the knowledge of chemistry and biology must be going to be increasing in the era of convergence science. For that, our business group is working on the program of convergence education with studying the major in depth and we concentrate all the energy on training chemistry talented researchers with having biological knowledge.”
Training the talented students who will be leading a basic and applied science
The business group is fully figuring out on hands-on experience as well with outside specialists as well. For example, they help students be able to work at R&D institutes and industrial company’s training activities such as Green Environment Institute, Flower Institute in Gyeongsangnamdo as internship and sent them to related companies and Institutes and even meet graduates who are working in that area, so that students could get more practical information and knowledge. Other than that are working on training and having excellent students throughout promotion and special lectures, specialized scholarship, dormitory allocation in prior, foreign language education, regular future consulting and club supporting.
Leader Lee Min-Ju talked about his plan, “This business group is developing and running programs for the internal stability in system of education quality and raising every staff’s ability and students’ learning capabilities. By that, I will make more effort to train talented people who this society needs and can lead the society as a specialized scientist.” Science is a nation’s competitiveness. With a bold fusion-convergence of chemistry and biology, I really expect their pains and efforts would make a great result like ‘A strong country in Science’ as they are training talented students.
