Spreading the pride of Korean hand-made chopsticks
Foreign visitors often get curious about Korean people's use of chopsticks. Alvin Toffler once said "The nation using chopsticks will sway the world" which possibly means that our chopstick culture is a thing to be proud. But there seems to be a concern that Koreans tend to regard chopsticks as trivial things. It is reported that the number of disposable chopsticks used in daily life are more than 100 million. Hopefully, there are increasing number of people who are using eco-friendly chopsticks and a Korean chopsticks brand 'I-hashi' has become very popular as premium hand made chopsticks and they are Located in Busan Kookje Sijang. 

CEO Kim with her husband, who made lacquerware, often visited Japan and learned the skills to make hand made chopsticks around the late 1990s. Kim established I-hashi soon after and combined lacquerware with 100% hand made chopsticks to revive traditional Korean beauty. They exported the goods to Japan at first but is receiving numerous orders from everywhere nowadays thanks to their unique technology.

Kim says "preparing a table means sincerity, decorum and culture. Laying chopsticks on a table in particular has been regarded as the very basic manner of setting. We need to revive this tradition and to pass it down to next generation." 
It takes one month to make a pair of I-hashi chopsticks through 30 kinds of processes such as natural dry & varnishing and putting Korean papers & mother-of-pearl. It is important to balance its shape and weight and to maintain a right temperature and moisture to prevent cracks and twist. And varnishing needs to be done with numerous repetition which is a very tough process. But these efforts are the reason why I-hashi has become so popular.

They are light, effective when cooking, and hygienic as the points do not touch the surface of table. They are also made with sophistication in a variety of ranges which is an element to attract young customers. From archaic patterns to chick design, I-hashi chopsticks are becoming sought-after goods not only from Korea and Japan but also from Asia and Europe. They even appeared on a MBC drama 'Banquet of Gods' in 2012.

I-hashi chopsticks are made of eco-friendly materials and process and this actually meets the demands of people who value their health the most. Varnished chopsticks, for example, deter the proliferation of germs and all the I-hashi chopsticks are made with no chemical substance at all. For this reason, you can easily meet I-hashi chopsticks not only at luxury restaurants but also at major department stores and large marts. The chopsticks are also scheduled to be provided to luxury goods shops in Insa-dong, Apgujeong-dong and Cheongdam-dong as well as tourist districts such Namdaemun. Kim added "our goal is to spread the beauty of Korean eco-friendly hand made chopsticks to the world and we will do our best to make our chopsticks used in every tables."
