Expressing realistic fantasy and abstraction with raw and conceptual materials
"My works are reinterpretation of daily life actualized through organism and natural object"
- Artist Seok-jung Kim

Myself expressed in lyrical and symbolic terms with the nature and living things
Everybody has different reason to be an artist. Kim decided to be an artist to express our history and culture on the canvas. But he faced a certain difficulty of pouring wide history on a canvas and turned his direction to 'my daily life' in his late 30s. He has expressed daily objects such as watches, earthenware, natural things, golf and people around him on the canvas for the last 15 years. With his main objects of birds and natural things, Kim focuses on the series of 'daily to generation' which reinterprets basic formations of our lives. Kim says "I draw roses not as itself but as reinterpreted version."

Kim takes various subjects and so if the year is horse he takes horses for his subject. Kim says "in terms of series, I'm very much interested in humanity. Our lives change gradually through 30s and 50s. I pursued a road to success when I was in my 30s but am cherishing friends, family and happiness now in the 50s. The subject basically is the same but the style changes. I want to express things more lyrically. Even if it's the same subject it changes as time goes by and I naturally express continuity of the times. In other words, I express myself as changing. That is true me and this is the reason I take 'myself' as prime subject for my works." This means that himself expressed in the nature and living things has a certain image through exaggeration and reduction while the spectators see it as formless that breaks the frame of expression itself. Critics say about Kim's works "they are the works which artistic training and coincidence are combined. Kim can control the uncontrollable spread of paints and we can feel like we are seeing the art of making a latte." Artists tell with their works but not with words and Kim is one of those who suggests to appreciate art works by seeing but not by trying to understand with the text given.

Method that is like Korean paper and the ways to appreciate art works
Kim says "when I mix paints I enjoy the effect of mixing process itself and avoid mixing it by a brush. I like reflecting the accidents of spreading and drying of the paints in my works. I try to express double colors with the method that the former color naturally combines with the latter color. In this way, I can produce the colors that cannot be created by brushing." Actors focus on color and tone when they make up. Same applies to Kim. Kim continues "my focus was on color when I went to Europe to study. If I follow what western artists do with color I cannot find my own color. That's why I started to use Korean papers with Korean color. The depth of Korean paper is perfect for maximizing synergy effect of the color and texture."

After mastering the coloring on Korean paper Kim could be able to express the same depth of Korean paper on the canvas by adjusting the usage of paints. Kim draws birds living in his mind but expresses them with the color in a sense of Korean paper. Kim's method is conspicuous and draws a lot of attention from the spectators. Kim says "it's important you appreciate art with your heart first and then try to understand." Regarding his exhibition in April, Kim says "spring is the time in which all the living things are pushing out their vitality. This is closely related with my concept 'daily to generation'. The best way for the audience to appreciate my works is to feel." Meanwhile, Kim is planning to move his studio to Yongin and extending his work hours so that he can give a little bit of rest from his job of teaching students at universities. Kim says "I've been really busy and I could only do 2D works. But I want to create 3D works by using steel and stones and connect them to 2D works." Kim pursues to be a popular artist like everybody else who goes to work and show their professionalism.
