전통 한복부터 드레스 스타일까지 자신만의 색깔 선보여

아무리 나이가 들더라도 생일은 누구에게나 특별한 날이다. 그 중에서도 특히나 새로 태어난 아이들의 첫 번째 돌아오는 생일을 축하하는 돌잔치는 부모와 가족 친지들에게 중요하고 의미 있는 행사라 할 수 있다. 부모의 입장에서도 돌잔치를 지내는 경험은 평생에 몇 번 돌아오지 않는 것이 사실이다. 그렇다고 내년에는 입지 못할 옷을 이 날 하루만을 위해 사주는 것도 어렵다. 이에 대한 대안으로 주목받고 있는 것이 돌복 대여 서비스다. 구입하는 것보다 훨씬 저렴한 가격과 원단부터 디자인까지 직접 골라 만든 독특한 디자인으로 엄마들의 주목을 받고 있는 돌복 전문 브랜드 '핑크티아라'는 돌부터 10세까지의 아이들이 입는 드레스와 턱시도, 전통한복 뿐 아니라 부모님까지 함께 입을 수 있는 커플 드레스를 제공한다.

‘핑크티아라’라는 이름은 공주가 공식 행사에서 쓰는 왕관과 같은 것을 가리키는 말로 특별한 날에 쓰는 악세사리 소품인 ‘티아라’에 상큼하고 사랑스러운 느낌을 주는 ‘핑크’를 결합해 만든 것이다. 이름에서 짐작할 수 있듯 핑크티아라가 만드는 돌복은 우리 고유의 전통한복 스타일에서부터 레이스가 있거나 비즈나 꽃 장식 등이 들어가 드레시한 느낌을 주는 개량한복 스타일까지 아이들에게 편안하면서도 입으면 빛날 수 있는 옷들이 대다수다. 일반적으로 많이 입는 드레스와 턱시도도 기성복처럼 딱 맞춰 떨어지는 것이 아니라 아기자기한 소품 같은 느낌의 옷들이 대다수다.

최근 출시한 신상품들 역시 한복 드레스라는 핑크티아라의 컨셉에 걸맞게 옷은 물론 배씨댕기와 왕건모 조바위 등의 악세서리도 직접 제작 디자인하며 자개 옷고름 등 한복 고유의 느낌은 그대로 살리면서 착용 시 편안함을 줄 수 있는 드레시한 느낌을 주는 라인업의 제품들로 이루어져 있다. 핑크티아라가 자체 제작한 이번 신상품은 라일락, 피치그린, 파스텔핑크, 크리스탈 등 남아와 여아, 엄마 아빠 의상이 5월 행사부터 일찌감치 마감을 기록하며 꾸준히 좋은 반응을 얻고 있다.

창원에서 시작해 서울, 거제까지 오프라인 매장 확대해
양희진 대표가 모든 과정 살피는 꼼꼼함이 경쟁력
9년 가까이 핑크티아라를 운영하고 있는 양희진 대표는 학생 때부터 줄곧 그림을 그렸지만  졸업 후 다른 진로를 선택해 직장 생활을 시작했음에도 그림에 대한 꿈은 사라지지 않았다. 돌복 대여 서비스를 구상한 것도 한복을 다양한 각도로 해석해보고 싶어 한복드레스를 만들어보면 좋겠다고 생각했고 그중에 쉽게 접할 수 있는 돌복을 선택했다. 양 대표는 “그 때만 해도 돌잔치에서 볼 수 있는 의상은 전통 한복 정도였어요. 엄마 아빠들은 결혼식에 입었던 한복을 입고 아기들은 한복이나 드레스로 했는데 가족 세트로 돌복을 구성하면 예쁠 것 같은 확신이 들었습니다. 그 때만 해도 돌복 활성화가 안 돼 있을 때인데 의외로 반응이 좋고 재밌었어요”라고 그 때를 회상했다.

창원에서 나고 자란 양 대표는 처음에 인터넷 쇼핑몰로 핑크티아라를 운영하던 중 자신이 만든 제품을 고객들이 직접 입어볼 수 있는 공간이 필요하겠다는 생각을 하게 되었다. 결국 2011년 창원 본점을 오픈하면서 오프라인 본격 확대에 들어갔고 곧이어 서울 천호동에도 매장을 열었다. 또한 작년 7월부터는 가맹점 형태로 거제에 또 하나의 매장을 두고 있다.

처음 시작할 때만 해도 이 시장을 개척하다시피 했지만 지금은 비슷한 업체들이 많이 생겨났다. 그럼에도 핑크티아라가 꾸준히 브랜드를 지켜낸 데에는 양 대표가 원단 선택부터 디자인, 제조 등의 전 과정을 직접 하나하나 꼼꼼하게 살펴보며 아이들에게 편한 옷을 만들기 위해 매일같이 노력한 덕분이다. 양 대표는 “첫째 아이 돌잔치 때 이용하셨던 분이 둘째 아이 돌에 다시 찾아주시기도 하시고 저희 제품에 만족하신 분들께서 입소문을 많이 내주십니다. 저희도 마케팅은 특별히 하지 않고 이용하신 분들이 후기를 올려주시면 그에 대한 보답을 한다거나 하는 식으로 진행하고 있어요”라고 고객들에게 감사의 마음을 표하기도 했다.

한복이 정말 좋고, 자신만의 색을 내고 싶은 신예 디자이너
지금의 자리까지 올 수 있었던 비결을 물었을 때 양 대표는 “젊은 사람이 왜 드레스를 안 하고 한복을 하냐고 많이 물어보시는데 저는 한복이 정말 좋거든요. 드레스는 드레스 나름의 어려움이 있긴 하지만 한복은 아무래도 색을 맞추기 위해 신경 써야 할 것도 많고 장신구도 많이 들어가서 하나의 컨셉을 완성하는 데 시간이 좀 걸리는 건 사실입니다. 그런데 저는 한복이 할수록 좋은 것 같아요”라고 이야기하며 한복에 대한 애정을 숨기지 않았다.

존경하는 인물로 우리나라 전통한복을 계승하면서 항상 새로운 각도에서 작품을 만들어내는 디자인계의 명인, 박술녀 디자이너를 꼽는 양희진 대표는 “아기들 한복을 만들다 보니 신경 쓸 부분도 많고 아무래도 한계가 있을 수밖에 없더라고요. 언젠가는 제 마음에 드는 작품 같은 옷을 만들어보고 싶습니다. 제가 처음 일을 시작할 때 모델이 되어주었던 아이들을 모아서 사진을 찍는다거나 하는 이벤트도 괜찮을 것 같아요”라며 웃음을 건넸다. “아이들을 행복하게 하는 일이 정말 즐겁다”고 이야기하는 양희진 대표는 이제껏 변함없이 꿈을 좇았고 자신만의 색깔을 담아내는 방법을 계속 고민해왔다. 바로 그런 점이 고객들의 웃음과 행복을 담아내는 핑크티아라의 현재를 만든 것이다.

Tiara is the crown that a princess wear at an official event. Yang combined the word tiara with the word pink to create his brand name. Pink Tiara makes Korean clothes and its modern versions fused with the characteristics of the western style for babies and children. Thanks to this concept, the clothes they make are charming and cute rather than formal. 
While the recent line of their products give comfortable yet dressy feeling, Yang also designed and made accessaries such as ribbons by herself this time. The new line includes lilac, peach green, pastel pink and crystal for children and parents and the products have created a sensation in the market.

Expanding offline stores nationwide
Attention to detail to secure competitiveness
Yang has been running Pink Tiara for 9 years. With her drawing skills, Yang wanted to give a variety of styles to the Korean costumes specifically designed for the one-year-old birthday celebration. Yang says "I found out a cliche that most mommies and daddies wear Korean costumes used in their wedding ceremony and the baby a typical costume or western dress. At that moment, I was struck with the idea that if I introduce a family package set specifically designed for the one-year-old birthday celebration, it might be a hit and I was right. The response was remarkable as the related market at that time was rather small." 

Based in Changwon, the city she was born and grew up, Yang launched her business online at first and she soon felt a need to provide offline space so that people can actually try on the costumes. Yang opened her flagship store in Changwon in 2011 and currently is running a branch in Cheonho-dong, Seoul and an affiliated store in Geoje Island opened last July. Yang almost pioneered the market but there are many similar businesses are now operating in the market. But the reason Pink Tiara still is a favorable brand in the market is because of Yang's meticulous attention to detail from choosing raw materials to design, production and selling. Yang says "we now have many regular customers and they spare no efforts to give compliments on our products and services. We are actually not doing any special advertisement but we reward the customers who leave honest feedback on our products and services."

When asked about the secrets of her success, Yang said "many people said to me why I don't do the dress business as I'm still young. Then I say it's not about age but what I love to do. Of course making Korean costume requires much more efforts and times compared to the western dress but I cannot succeed without my passion and love in what I'm doing." Meanwhile, a master Korean costume designer Park Sul-nyeo has been a great inspiration for Yang. She continues "making Korean costumes for children is a really delicate job and I sometimes face my limitation. Then I got some inspiration from Park and it helped me a lot. As I love children very much, one day, I want to make a special event for the children who willingly became my model when I first started my business."
