세계로 수출하는 김해 한림딸기

21세기는 환경의 시대이다. 환경문제는 수질오염, 대기오염, 쓰레기 오염 등 오염물질을 함부로 배출하여 발생되는 문제로 생각하여 오염물질 처리시설 확충으로 해결하려는데 문제가 있다. 이처럼 유기화학 농약이나 화학비료를 남용하여 하천이나 호수로 유입되어 산소 요구량이 많아지고 녹조현상이 바닷속 생물까지 몰살시키는 등 환경문제가 심각한 것이 현실이다. 이런 가운데 친환경 농산물이라는 새로운 아이템으로 신 농업 산업을 주도하고 있는 이들이 있다. 친환경 농법으로 국내 뿐 아니라 외국인들의 입맛을 사로잡은 딸기 영농조합이 있어 주목을 받고 김해한림산타딸기공선회(회장 장병권)가 바로 그곳이다.

비옥한 사질양토에서 재배한 저공해 열매 채소인 한림 딸기는 비타민C의 다량 함유로 피부미용과 피로회복에 좋으며 감기 예방은 물론 멜라닌 색소 침착을 막아 기미, 주근깨 예방에 탁월한 효과를 보이고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 과육이 부드럽고 당도가 높아 맛이 좋아 국내는 물론, 일본을 비롯해 동남아 등으로 수출이 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 

“일반적으로 딸기100g당 27kcal의 낮은 칼로리 때문에 여성들이 다이어트 식품으로 많이 이용하고 있습니다. 뿐만 아니라 황산화작용을 하며 비타민 C의 함유량도 100g당 99mg으로 레몬보다 더 많이 가지고 있는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 특히 딸기속에 함유되어 있는 일라직산은 암세포를 막아주는 역할을 하고 있어 많은 사람들이 딸기를 즐겨 먹고 있습니다.” 이 외에도 딸기를 먹으면 체력증진 및 면역력 향상, 시력향상, 변비예방, 그리고 류마티즘과 신경통에도 탁월한 효과를 보인다. 

장 회장은 “이처럼 딸기의 좋은 효능을 그대로 섭취하기 위해서는 딸기를 보관할 때는 냉장고에 꼭지를 따지 않은 채 보관해야 합니다. 또한 딸기는 습도에 약한 과일이기 때문에 종이상자에 담긴 채로 보관을 하는 것이 좋고 딸기를 씻을 때는 흐르는 찬 물에 씻는 것이 가장 좋습니다. 딸기를 물에 30초 이상 담가두면 딸기의 효능 중 가장 큰 역할을 하는 비타민C가 손실되기 때문에 딸기를 씻을 때는 꼭 흐르는 찬 물에 씻어야 딸기의 효능을 그대로 섭취할 수 있습니다”라고 강조했다.

세계로 수출하는 김해 한림딸기
현재 김해시 한림면에서 딸기를 재배하는 농가는 전체 100여 농가에 이른다. 그 중 친환경영농조합법인의 회원은 40농가로 한림 딸기 전체의 약 40%에 이르며 7억원의 연매출을 올리고 있다. “한림에서 출하되고 있는 딸기는 일명 ‘희망딸기’로 불리고 있습니다. 지난 2002년 한림면 전 지역이 수해로 인해 2주일 가량이 물에 잠겨 딸기묘종 전량이 침수됐음에도 불구하고 다음해 기적적으로 정상출하됐던 것을 비유해서입니다. 당시 수해로 농민들이 어려움에 처해 있을 때 한림농협의 도움이 아니었으면 한림 딸기가 이렇게까지 유명해지지 않았을지도 모릅니다.”

2002년 수해가 난 직후, 한림농협 전 직원은 전국 딸기 재배단지를 돌며 딸기묘종 구입에 나섰다고 한다. 그러나 만만치 않은 물량의 딸기묘종을 찾기란 쉽지만은 않은게 현실. 결국 순천·함양·곡성 등지에서 800만 종의 묘종을 구입해 새벽 2~3시까지 농가에 묘종을 공급한 덕분에 예년과 다름없는 농사를 지을 수 있도록 했다. 그로 인해 당시 수급이 원활치 못했던 딸기 값이 올라 농협에 대한 농업인들의 신뢰가 높아졌음은 물론이다.

“농협과 농업인과의 공조를 통해 형성된 신뢰관계는 딸기를 재배하는 농업인들에게 중요한 힘이 되고 있습니다. 때문에 친환경영농조합법인의 회원들뿐만 아니라 한림면에서 출하하는 전체 딸기의 약 80%를 한림농협을 통해 유통하고 있습니다.” 

이처럼 농업인과 농협이 서로 힘을 합친 결과, 한림 딸기는 당도가 기준치에 미치지 못하면 납품을 하기 어려운 국내의 유명 대형 마트와 일본과 동남아등으로 수출을 하고 있다.
현재 농가 대부분이 20여년 이상의 재배경력으로 생산기술에 있어서는 전국 어디에 내놔도 뒤지지 않는 장인들이다. 재배 품종은 매향, 설향, 육보, 장희 등 4종류로 이 중 농가가 가장 심혈을 기울이는 것은 순수 국내 육성품종인 매향과 설향 품종이다. 특히 매향은 홍콩·대만 등 동남아지역의 수출 품목이며 동남아 지역뿐만 아니라 다른 지역으로도 해외수출을 대폭 늘릴 계획을 가지고 있다. 특히 지난해 12월부터는 재배하기 까다롭다는 ‘산타’ 품종의 재배성공으로 태국·인도네시아 등 동남아 지역에 10t 정도(약 1억3000만원어치)를 수출하는 실적을 올리기도 했다.

싼타는 그동안 경북 등 일부 지역에서 소량으로 수출해 왔지만 이처럼 많은 물량을 지속적으로 수출한 것은 김해 한림지역이 처음이다. 뿐만 아니라 싼타 딸기는 2010년 경북도농업기술원이 색이 좋고 저장성이 강한 매향과 병해충에 강한 설향을 인공교배 해 육성한 품종으로 과육이 단단하고 당도가 높고 쉽게 짓물러지지 않아 저장성과 유통성이 우수하다는 장점이 있어 소비자의 선호도가 높다. 

“농사란 하늘에서 내린 직업이라 생각합니다. 자연을 거스르지 않고 함께 하면서 땀흘린 만큼 정직하게 인간들에게 보답하는 것이 농사라고 봅니다. 그래서 농사를 짓는 농민들은 정직합니다. 정직한 사람들이 만들어 내는 농산물은 그래서 그 자체로도 가치가 있는 것이라고 생각합니다”라고 전하는 김해한림산타딸기공선회의 장병권 회장. 매년 11월부터 5월까지 딸기 농사가 끝나면 수박을 심어 이모작을 하며 지역 경제발전에 이바지 하고 있는 그는 농사를 천직으로 생각하며 평생을 정직하게 농사를 지을 때가 가장 행복하다는 그의 말처럼 정직하게 지은 한림 딸기가 동남아를 넘어 전 세계인들의 입맛을 사로잡을 수 있도록 기대해본다.

In the 21st century we live, environmental problems are often considered to be caused by discharging pollutants at random accounting for water, air and waste pollution, and many simply think that it can be worked out by expanding pollutant disposal facilities. Like this, abuse of organic agrichemicals or chemical fertilizer is introduced into our rivers or lakes causing high oxygen demand, with algae outbreak even destroying underwater creatures, and proving how much serious the current environmental problem is. In this situation, there are people who are leading a new agriculture with a new item of eco-friendly produce. It is Gimhae-Hallim Santa Strawberry Cooperative (head: Chang Byung-gwon) whose strawberry produced by eco-friendly farming is now a hot item not only among Koreans but also for foreign people.

As low-pollution fruit grown in fertile sandy soil, Hallim strawberry contains a large quantity of vitamin C, which is good for skin and recovery from fatigue, preventing not only colds but also freckles and lentigo by stopping deposit of melanin plastid. Besides, with a soft pulp and good taste from a high sugar content, Hallim strawberry is much consumed domestically and actively exported to Japan and Southeast countries.  

“Generally, because of the low calories of 27kcal per 100g, strawberry is much used by women for diet food. It performs antioxidant function and has a high content of vitamin C, 99mg per 100g, more than lemon. Especially illogic acid contained in strawberry acts the role of stopping cancer cells.” Besides, strawberry shows excellent effect of increasing physical strength, immunity, eyesight, and preventing constitution, rheumatism and neuralgia. 

President Chang stressed, “when storing strawberry, you should keep them in the fridge without cutting off the stalk to take in such good efficacy of the fruit as it is. Since strawberry is a fruit weak in moisture, it’s good to keep them within a paper box and it is best to wash them off in a running cold water. If you submerge strawberries in water more than 30 minutes, it will lose vitamin C, the biggest merit of the fruit. You should remember to wash them off in a running cold water.”

Currently, there are 100 farmhouses which are growing strawberries at Hallim-myeon, Gimhae city. Of them, 40 farmhouses are the members of the eco-friendly cooperative, so 40% of the whole Hallim strawberries are reaping 700 million won of sales annually. “Strawberries shipped from Hallim are also called ‘hope strawberry’ because in 2002, the whole area of Hallim-myeon had its whole amount of strawberry seeding immersed in water for about 2 weeks by flood damage, but miraculously, the next year we achieved a normal shipping. At that time, farmers suffered a great loss from flood disaster and if it had not been for the help of Hallim Cooperative, Hallim strawberry wouldn’t be so famous as it is.” 

Right after 2002 flood damage, the whole staff of Hallim Cooperative went out to travel around the complexes of growing strawberries in the country to purchase the strawberry young plants. It was not easy to find such a large quantity of young strawberry trees, but in the end, they purchased 8 million young trees from Sooncheon, Hamyang and Goksung, and supplied them to farmhouses even until 2 or 3 in the wee hours enabling them to achieve the farming not different from the usual years. This event served to enhance the farmers’ confidence in the cooperative because the strawberry rose in prices due to the poor supply and demand then.     

“The bond between the cooperative and farmers has become an important energy for strawberry growers. So not only the members of eco-friendly cooperative but around 80% of the whole strawberries shipped from Hallim-myeon are circulated through Hallim Agricultural Cooperative.”

Like this, as a result of standing together between farmers and the agricultural cooperative, Hallim strawberry is being delivered to domestic large-size marts and even exported to Japan and Southeast Asia, where delivery itself is hard if sugar content is below a certain level.    

Currently, most of the farmhouses have over 20 years of experience in growing the fruit and they are master hands second to none in our country in their production technique. Their growing breeds are four - Maehyang, Seolhyang, Yookbo and Changhee – and they are putting their heart and soul especially into Maehyang and Seolhyang, which are pure domestically fostered breeds. Especially Maehyang is the exporting item to Hong Kong, Taiwan and southeast Asia but they still have a plan to export this item overseas other than southeast Asia on a large scale. Since last December, they succeeded in cultivating Sanata, a breed known for difficulty in growing, and exported around 10 tons (130 million won) of it to Southeast Asian region including Thai and Indonesia. Some domestic parts including Gyungbuk have exported Santa in small quantities but this is the first time ever that this large a quantity has been exported continuously from Gimhae-Hallim area. 

More than this, Santa strawberry is the fostered breed from Gyungbuk Agricultural Technology Institute by artificially cross-fertilizing Maehyang, with good color and strong storage, and Seolhyang with a strong resistance to disease and insect pest. It enjoys high preference from consumers for the merit of hard pulp, high content of sugar and being hard to be crushed with excellent storage and circulation. 

“Agriculture is a god-given job. It is farming not to go against nature and return to people honestly as much as what they have sweated on together with nature. So farmers are honest. Produce made by honest people is valuable in itself,” said Chang Byung-gwon, president of Gimhae-Hallim Santa Strawberry Cooperative. Each year they grow strawberry from November through May and then plant watermelon by a doubling cropping, which contributes to economic development in the community. Thinking that farming is a calling. President Chang says he is happiest when farming honestly for life. It is highly expected that the honestly made Hallim strawberry will rise above the scope of Southeast and appeal to the palate of the people around the world.
