President Lee Sang-gon of Gimhae Eco-Friendly Pond Snail Association
Best-quality 100% organic pond snail

You can say that farming is a war with weed and so much is weeding the most difficult part in farming.  Especially in eco-friendly farming without using a weed killer, weeding becomes even harder. In dry-field farming you can use vinyl covering or other ecotype covering, but in paddy field covering is impossible, so maybe weeding problem is more serious with rice field. For this reason, eco-friendly farming is in the spotlight across the country. Especially, duck farming or pond snail farming is drawing attention, the latter of which is working very well in terms of saving labor and weeding effect itself. We met Lee Sang-gon, president of Gimhae eco-friendly pond snail association which is nursing pond snails 100% organically.

Best-quality 100% organic pond snail
“Pond snail is good for our body and very useful for farming itself. Farming is in some sense a war with weed but pond snail has so many uses that its farming has also been developed for weeding. Pond snails are very fond of weed. In our country, there are pond snails mostly from the southern part of China and tropic golden apple snail is mainly used for weeding. Pond snails feed on the weed in water, but if we let the rice seedlings so big as not to be immersed in water, they don’t feed on rice plants, which proves very good for eco-friendly farming.”
The biggest strength of pond snail farming is that you can reduce the use of weed killer and fertilizer which are harmful to our body. On a paddy field where weed killer has been spayed, almost no living thing can survive. Because of its strong toxicity, it also decreases the fertility of soil, and to recover it you come to use chemical fertilizer.

However, after harvest, pond snails enter into the ground and become organic fertilizer. Pond snail contains so rich calcium, chitosan, protein, etc. that it recovers fertility of soil and helps grow a healthy rice plant. Besides, its shell improves the earth’s percentage of void and houses microbes, so using the secretion of pond snail, the earth becomes soft after harvest. “Compared to the existing diverse eco-friendly farming, pond snail farming gives little stress to a rice plant enabling it to grow healthily and sturdily. Especially, its weeding effect is so excellent that while at the beginning and in the middle of rice planting, two times of spraying weed killer it is around 90%, pond snail gives a weeding effect of 98%.” Together with it, pond snail containing rich protein is much used for food such as beanpaste pot stew. Pond snail contains protein, glucide, fat, iron, potassium, calcium, vitamin, hydrochloric acid, phosphorus, cholesterol and pollen, and its protein content is on a similar level to meat.

Pond snail used for protection of natural ecosystem and eco-friendly farming
President Lee Sang-gon, who has been running ‘Gimhae pond snail farm’ for over 20 years, originally did it just for food purpose. “Generally, there are two kinds of pond snails: for food and for agriculture. At the time when I started, I nursed pond snails for food purpose. Then, as there appeared more and more farm houses using pond snails for eco-friendly rice farming since several years ago, I started producing pond snails for farming rather than for food.” He is nursing pond snails intended for eco-friendly rice farming on a plot of 4,000 Pyeong at Eungdal-ri, Changyoo-myeon, Gimhae city because a domestic breed cannot survive in price competition due to an increasing number of Chinese pond snails for food. His pond snails produced in systematic management are sold at 80% for farming purpose nationwide, while the rest is for food purpose.

When it is cold, pond snails enter into the ground for hibernation. So earnest nursing starts in March when it is getting warm. Pond snails nursed from March and shipped in May and June next year for farming purpose are supplied in accordance with features of each region. There are many pond snail farmhouses increasing around the country, but pond snails from Gimhae region is known to be the best in quality. “Farmhouses in other regions visit Gimhae pond snail farms to learn the skills or for study of the feedstuff used, etc,” said President Lee proudly about the excellent pond snails produced in Gimhae.

However, it has not been that easy until what he is at this standing. He refers to the price of foodstuff risen over three times compared to when starting the farming and lower support for agriculture than other local governments as the reason of difficulty in running business. In the face of such situation, he has made the Association of Gimhae Eco-friendly Pond Snails endeavoring for the common benefit of Gimhae farmhouses and their rights and interests. President Lee Sang-gon is performing diverse social services for local development such as Saemaeul leader, head of night guard for Changyoo 3-dong, Right life council (Basalhyeop) and media solidarity of the handicapped for human rights. As his hopes, we expect that Gimhae eco-friendly pond snails will serve the people’s table as a healthy and right food.
