Raspberry from Gimhae taking more than 70% of domestic market share

Guaranteed quality and taste of Gimhae raspberry
Cultivation of raspberry in Sangdong-myeon, Gimhae is in full swing. The raspberry trees are lined up on a 3,000§³ land and the raspberry in this region contains 13 to 17 Brix (sugar content) compared to other regions thanks to its perfect soil and climate. But it is important not to miss the right time to pick as they drop and get rotten otherwise. Most of them now is being sold in the capital area thanks to Sangdong Agricultural Cooperative's passionate advertisement which has been carried out for 10 years. Oh says "it was not even imaginable for farmer to sell raspberry before the Association was established. People in the cities did not know much about raspberry and the market therefore was limited. But farmers started to work together to promote the product. They could not be able to make a profit for the first 7 years by selling it in Busan and Changwon but they soon expanded their market to Seoul." This was a great success and they sold a 500g of 4,000 small boxes at Yangjae-dong Agricultural Produce Distribution Center, Seoul. The strategy was that they put the name and contact number of the farmer on the package to win public confidence.

Oh says "Gimhae raspberry is rich in sugar contents and fragrance as it's grown in a fantastic environment where there is fresh water, air and enough sunlight. Nutritionally, it is rich in calcium, vitamin and protein and it improves kidney function and brightens our eyes. Its effect is even written in Donguibogam  (Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine). 

Gimhae raspberry is now preparing to knock on the global market. But they need an Environment-friendly certification to enter the markets in Japan and the US. It is three times difficult to produce environment-friendly raspberry and there is no standardized growing methods or related academic papers and researchers. In terms of  agricultural chemicals, the Association is working with related companies to do something extemporarily.

Oh says "we make a booklet of cultivation record every 2 years to give out to farmers and researchers as the staff of Gimhae Agricultural Technology Center are even asking us the information. We hold regular meetings with the heads of 18 raspberry farms and train the farmers based on this record." Oh currently is planning to carry out R&D alongside the cultivation and to make a byproduct such as raspberry jam to expand the market.
