Cheonman Buddist Temple/ Rev. Hyangdeok
To give is the source of pleasure
.

Dalcheon village, Buk-gu of Ulsan city, is famous for fire tree forest at Mt. Cheonma. At the entrance there is Manseokgol reservoir spread like a picture serving as a promenade to go round the reservoir while the fire tree forest is well-known among Ulsan citizens as a space where they can breathe and feel the forest air. Cheonman-sa Temple located at a turn in the road to this fire tree forest is also known among people for its healing function. On this beautiful and peaceful mountain foot, chief priest Rev. Hyangdeok is busy with lotus lantern work for Buddha’s 2559th Birthday saying “To give is the source of pleasure.” He is also president of Korean Buddhist Hall of Fame, UN-NGO messenger of peace, and a counselor at Ulsan regional central police station.

Recently on March 1st, Cheoman temple has become the news by hoisting the national flags of 21 countries which were visiting the temple including a large-sized Taegeuk flag (3m¥ª4.5m). On the golden-color magnificent temple are fluttering the national flags large enough to be seen from a mound far away, which might be the largest ones in entire Ulsan. These national flags of each country are fluttering dancingly greeting Ulsan citizens who visit Cheonman Temple and emanating good energies to them to follow Buddha’s example. Especially, the Taegeuk flag is fluttering more forcefully to cheer the visitors up. Maybe there is no other temple in our country which wishes for the world peace and wellbeing by hoisting national flags of each country centering on the Taegeuk flag.
“Who is the owner of this temple?” Chief priest Rev. Hyangdeok says, “Those who stay are the owner and those who leave are the traveler.” Cheonman Temple with each country’s national flag raised up is constantly visited not only by ambassadors at home and abroad but also many countries’ dignitaries regardless of their religion. It is probably because they want to show gratitude to and participate in the Rev. Hyangdeok’s movements as UN messenger of peace and agree to Buddha’s thinking of benevolence.

Cheonman Temple which has embodied the principle of the universe
Rev. Hyangdeok, who had lost his parents early in life and immersed himself in the practice of Buddhist austerities, founded Cheonman Temple wholly as the result of his ascetic practices. While in applying himself at Mt. Jiri, similar in shape to Mt. Yeongchui where Buddha stayed for preaching, Rev. Hyangdeok gave his all to practices eating uncooked food. On the 7th year of the practice, he saw an image of a Buddhist temple before his eyes in one early morning. The same sight continued for several days and Rev. Hayangdeok, realizing it was revelation, decided to climb down the mountain and traveled around the country to find a site for the temple. At last, he found the site at Maseokgol, Ulsan, and raised a large-size construction work to found the current Cheonman temple.

This temple situated on Mt. Cheonma thickly covered with fire trees and pines harmoniously with borders of a mountain, reservoir, old castle path and streams first attracts attention with its magnificence. In addition to a beautiful scenery, there are Geuknak and Chilseong bridges representing a paradise both for life and death, Buddha of Medicine sitting on them, and the palatial residence is set with black, blue, white and yellow jewels with Vairocana, Nosana, Sakyamuni, Medicine, Amida, Geumryun, Maitreya, guardian deity of children, Goddess of Mercy, Baeksawi, Avatamska, Daebeom heavenly king, Jaeseok heavenly king, Witae heavenly god, Ten major bight kings, Bodhisattva, moving Buddha of Medicine, as well as China’s holy-land-brought Merciful Goddess, Samjeon bonze, Namsoon acolyte, Chilseong tower and stone Buddha. The temple also worships the harmony of the male and female, 12 bands, and enshrines Seven Buddhas, the Sea God, God of mountains and Tan-gun. Cheonman Temple with every rock touched by Rev. Hyangdeok’s care and sweat shows the essence of Buddhist view of the world. The temple has reproduced ‘a paradise for both life and death’ with images of Buddhist view of the world and philosophy composing the three of desire, formed and formless realms, 6 worlds and 6 heavens including hell, famished devil, beasts, Asura, terrestrial world and heavenly world, and the universe of no-life heaven and the Four Devas. Unlike this splendor of the temple, Rev. Hyangdeok makes frugality a rule in everyday life, and says that Buddhist things are all for visitors and mankind while he is just getting along as an example for pleasure from giving.

“Human mind is something like a vessel that needs emptying. True self means the idea about my being, self or benevolence, while the five-sense heart means sensual desire that makes one feel greed, lewdness, anger, and shame.
Rev. Hyangdeok said that one should use one’s mind as a vessel to hold a blessing by emptying the elements of making one egoistic and ruin ascetic practices including three poisons, that is, greed, anger and foolishness. Holding greed, anger and foolishness in one’s heart makes no room left for blessing. It is the true life of a Buddhist to both receive and give blessings to others by shedding greed, anger and foolishness gradually. Rev. Hyangdeok emphasized that the same goes for a country, so for a larger concept like a state, we should set up its foundation more firmly.
“The biggest number is neither a hundred nor 100 million, but one. Neglecting the one, meaning the beginning and foundation, you cannot make a hundred or 100 million. One’s aspiration does not make with haste. It is the law of cause and occasion. As with an apartment house, we can build it high only when the foundation is strong and the beginning is solid. Put easily, to grow flowers well, you should water and fertilize them timely and adjust humidity and temperature. In nature’s law, heaven is father and earth is mother. Spring, summer, fall and winter are the very law of nature,” is what he preaches.

A lamplight to lead a human-like life
As superintendent priest of the Chogye Order, UN (NGO) messenger of peace, the World Buddhism House member of the supreme council, Associated TV broadcasting (108) president, OBN TV president, Korea Post editorial writer, Central police station counselor, and president of national league for helping students in charge of their families, Rev, Hyangdeok is very active in many organizations with his post. At Cheonman Temple, he is praying for the prosperity and welfare of the nation and promoting Korean Buddhism by holding a meeting for the peace of mankind by inviting high priests and notables from every corner of the world including each country’s ambassador to Korea. It has been 1600 years since Buddhism was transmitted to this land. Being faithful to the traditional meaning and role of Buddhism as a defense of the fatherland with its unusual characteristic of comforting the people through numerous national disasters, Rev, Hyangdeok is holding prayer vigils for the happiness of mankind, peace of the country, South-North unification, World peace, national and economic stability.

“For every person, it is best to lead a human-like life and go to another world. What matters most is not how to be born but how to die. It is not a stranger even if bumping into each other in our former life, so we should be a person to receive a blessing enough to share it with others before we go.”

Pleasing another, relieving his difficulty rejoicing at another’s pleasure and treating others equally, realizing that all people with different language, will and skin color are my brothers and saving the whole mankind with a big heart and devout disposition, Rev, Hyangdeok is always praying for more people to follow the eight right paths of Buddha and achieve their wishes. He predicts, “At Cheonman Temple located at 108 Manseokgol, people will come receive blessing and go with a new life, so in my generation we live a farm servant but in future generations there will be more people like Ban Ki-moon UN Secretary General, Lee Geon-hee Samsung Group president or Chung Joo-yeong Hyundai president out of this Buddhist seminary.”
