Combi blind coupled with air-care blind
““Eco-friendly air-care blind, a new technology from industry-academy-institute partnership””
Kim Sang-gon, president of Rico Blinds

Once Korea was not considered by foreign buyers a country to import blinds from but now things are different with the birth of Korean-made blinds recognized by the world market. Of these, Rico Blinds rose to the upper ranks in the industry with Combi blind resulting from new technology but launched another eco-friendly item of air-care blind through new technology, too. President Kim Sang-gon says that he will presenta new business model in the blind industry showing his ambition to find his place in the global market.

Air-care blind cares for both one’s privacy and health

Lately, Rico Blinds’ technology is the talk of the town after the company launched ‘Air-care blind,’ which has combined the ordinary blind for cutting out light with advanced technology of absorbing and resolving harmful substances. It was originally Prof. Yoon Gyung-byung’s (Sogang Univ.) unique patented technology of Zeolite (crystalline aluminosilicate compound) supersonic attachment and it was applied through industry-academy-institute R&D for absorptive and resolving function, which had been known to be only possible when porous substance is attached through supersonic waves. Geolite is an attractive substance because it can remove volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde and toluene, which are more dangerous than cesium and cause cancer even to non-smokers, everyday bad odor and cigarette smoke. President Kim, who has the patent on selling products in application to blinds and curtain says proudly, ““This product can appeal to customers who bring up children with weak respiratory organs or who want to prevent sick house syndrome, not to speak ofantibiotic and dehumidifying functions.

If a bad-odor causing substance is attached, it breaks the very molecular structure, so it is more helpful to human body than covering by temporary incense.”” ““Blind servesto intercept the sight from outside, cut out sun beams and ultraviolet rays and keep the interior beauty. By adding healthcare to these, we are aiming to be competitivein the global market. It is not a blocking but a resolution we have. Once installed, the effect keeps up more than 5 years, and it is even more innovative given that photo-catalytic type is a transitory effect from coating with possibility for reemission. The textile of air-care blind got a testing record of reducing formaldehyde to one-fifth in five hours from authorized institution and the experiment showed the result of reducing toluene to one-fiftieth in five hours. From investigation by installing it on the newly built Woojung Hall in Sogang University, the measurement of interior TVOC resulted in around 1000 units of difference in density before and after installingthe blind. Besides, the product received excellent test marks from FITI Testing & Research Institution, Korea Testing & Researching Institute, Korea Apparel Testing & Research Institute.

Thinking of diverse business models enlivening idea and economy

In the industry, President Kim’s capability is well-known. After starting it accidentally in 1987, he made it a livelihood in 1991 and came to produce 12 kinds of blinds products 300 raw materials. With advance of domestic technology, it turned from imports into production and he rose to third place in the blind industry. While vertical blind took up 80-90% and the market was little more than a coexistence with neighboring curtain shops in a small family firm, president Kim pushed ahead with the combi blind, currently a market share of 70%, as a flagship product. ““Our big asset has been making business model with a special brand and I am thinking of a new sales route. Besides, though the industry is making 800 units on the average, we have a productivity of 2,500 units in our own factory.”” President Kim’s excellent idea is semi-fabrication. ““What bothers me in dealing with combined blind, it costs so much to advance overseas that it is hard to cultivate a business market. So I used it contrariwise. For CSCD ocean view program, it is enough to supply semi-product or things not a finished product by cutting off UPS and sending it overseas. For semi-product, tax is small and logistic cost reduces to one-seventh, so we have sufficient marketability. There is no burden of overstocking, either. For overseas convention, when launching ‘Garosero,’a blind brand, we placed 5thamong Japanese blind brands. We are finding markets overseas this way with competitiveness, while I am thinking of introducing the US business model and teaching this area, which is both economical and easy to learn, to those in preparation for startup after retirement in order to help their small capital startups for which business is possible only witha car. We can teach constriction work, kinds of products and sales. For a long-term view, I am considering creating employment. There are 60 people in our factory, but the current sales of 13 billion won will double by opening a new factory with over 100 workers. Though different for each field, the manufacturing industry is said to start from 100 employees. We will become even larger.””

Korea as a blind powerhouse expected by no one

President Kim introduces the merits of products. ““We send combined blind, ecolux, roll screen and vertical blind in semi-product, and honeycomb shade and curtain in finished goods. Our combi blind has a large volume of head rail so it is excellent in coverage. Since electric motor and remote control are operated automatically by setting a time when outing, it also has the function of security. Above all, since there are no adjusting strings for the blind, it is good for preventing safety accident for homes bringingup children or pets.”” Though there is perception about purchasing a blind by paying a visit, President Kim is ready to meet customers with a positive sales strategy.

““I am going to enter into TV home shopping. Not just selling products, I will visit customers combining service forms of sizing, installation, construction and care when moving. The Korean blind market, which used to copy Japanese things and be outweighed by China in price competition, started to export and have been recognized as a global standard. It is an inspiring deed considering that there are only 70 manufactures among 3,000 blind companiesin the nation. When we have our technology recognized by domestic customers, we will turn some part of the market, such as Walmart, conquered by China toward Korea. Domestic raw material is rather high in levels. The ordinary blind is higher in price range with a better quality, so I am selling them in the self-blind form.”” President Kim’s advice is impressive when he says preoccupying the market is as important as patent. With his business model of receiving orders online and visiting to install offline, marketability of Rico Blinds is not likely to know any of slump. As a member of World Vision and a devout Christian, president Kim is also interested in social contribution such as donation to a welfare foundation. His ambition feels crediblewhen he says that he will achieve double thesales in 2015 to the US, Japan, Vietnam, Myanmar, China, Australia, Canada, Taiwan, Indonesia, etc. and get his company listed on the stock marketin 2020 becoming top seeds at home and abroad with a blind.
