행복한 나눔으로 만드는 가치 있는 삶
무등산 자락에서 퍼져나가는 사랑과 자애의 손길

광주 도심 어느 곳에서나 고개를 조금 들어보면 무등산(無等山)이 보인다. 광주의 진산(鎭山)이며 우리나라에서 21번째로 지정된 국립공원인 무등산은 언제나 어머니의 품과 같은 포근함으로 광주시민들을 감싸주고 있다. 무등산을 찾는 수많은 이들이 반드시 거치는 곳이 있다. 무등산의 북쪽 무등산지구 한 켠에 자리한 원효사가 바로 그곳이다.

원효의 정신을 이어가는 유서 깊은 사찰
무등산 산장으로 난 잘 포장된 도로를 따라 올라가다 보면 웅장한 산세에 둘러싸인 원효사를 발견할 수 있다. 사찰 경내가 아름답고 경관이 좋기로 소문난 원효사는 정확한 창건연대는 알 수 없으나 신라의 지증왕이나 법흥왕 때 세워진 것으로 추정되고 있다. 1980년 대웅전 신축 작업중 국립광주박물관 학예연구팀에 의해 발굴된 청동, 청동불 입상, 동경(구리거울), 각종 소조불 등 백여점의 유믈은 통일신라 말에서 조선시대에 이르는 다양한 시대의 것들로서 원효사의 오랜 역사를 말해준다. 원효사 주지 현지스님은 “전해지는 이야기에 따르면 신라 때 원효대사가 산의 수려함을 사랑하여 이곳에 암자를 세우고 지냈다하여 원효암이라 이름 지었다고 합니다. 고려 충숙왕 때에 이르러서 어느 정도 사찰의 모양이 갖춰지게 중창되었다고 합니다”라고 전했다. 이후 임진왜란과 한국전쟁 당시 사찰이 전소되는 아픔을 겪었던 원효사는 1982년 복원을 통해 지금의 모습을 갖추게 되었다.

원효사에서 가장 많은 이들이 방문하는 곳은 절 입구에 위치한 누각인 ‘회암루’다. 현지스님에 따르면 본래 수행하는 사람들이 공부할 수 있는 공간으로 만든 것이나 경치를 구경하는 사람들이 자주 이용하고 좋아해서 시민들을 위해 개방한 것이라고 한다. 공부하는 단 몇 사람을 위한 것보다 많은 사람들을 위한 장소가 되는 것이 더 의미 있으리라는 생각에서다.

작은 나눔이 큰 도움이 됩니다
원효사의 주지를 맡고 있는 현지스님은 현재 사단법인 생명나눔실천 광주전남지역본부 본부장을 맡고 있기도 하다. 자기보다 이웃을 먼저 생각하고, 또 작은 것이라도 이웃들과 나누는 따뜻하고 아름다운 사회를 만들고자 노력하고 있는 생명나눔실천 광주전남지역본부에서는 이를 위해 다양한 활동을 펼치고 있다. 더 많은 이들의 생명을 구하기 위한 ‘장기기증 희망서약 캠페인’과 ‘조혈모 희망등록 캠페인’을 펼치는가 하면, ‘사랑의 茶 나눔’, ‘사랑의 밥차’ 행사와 함께 지난 겨울에는 소외계층에 쌀, 연탄, 김장김치 등을 전달하는 행사도 진행했다. 

현지스님은 “정기자선음악회를 통한 홍보, 매년 희망 걷기를 통해 얻어진 참가비와 모금활동, 후원금 등으로 16명에게 총 6,600만원을 지원할 수 있었습니다. 또한 장기기증희망등록 155명, 조혈모세포기증희망등록 376명, 헌혈은행 캠페인 및 나눔의 집을 통해 모집한 헌혈증서를 화순전남대학교병원, 조선대학교병원을 비롯한 전국의 환우들에게 지원했습니다. 아직도 많이 부족한 나눔이지만, 더 많은 이들의 따뜻한 관심과 사랑을 한 자리에 모을 수 있도록 노력하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다. 

그밖에도 현지스님은 광주종교인평화화의 회장, 시남북교류협의회 상임대표도 맡고 있다. 이렇게 많은 단체의 장을 맡고 있는 것에 대해 현지스님은 “일과 봉사가 어려울수록 그것이 나의 수행이라고 생각하며 더욱 정진하고 있습니다”라고 말했다. 

삶이란 서로 돕고 스스로 인내하는 것
현지스님은 더불어 사는 삶을 위해선 타인에게 조금 더 너그러울 필요가 있다고 말한다. 머리로만 살아가는 것이 아니라 가슴으로 세상을 바라보고 살아갈 줄 알아야 한다는 것이다. 현지스님은 “저 또한 젊었을 때에는 내가 모든 것을 알고 있고, 힘을 가지고 있어야 남에게 베푸는 것이 가능하다고 여겼습니다. 하지만 ‘베풂’이란 지식과 힘, 물질이 아니라 ‘마음’이라는 것을 깨달았습니다. 서로 모자란 부분을 보완해주며 같이 살아나가는 것이 현명한 삶입니다”라고 설명했다.

현지스님은 또한 세상을 살아가면서 모든 것이 자신이 원하는 대로 이루어지길 바라는 것은 어리석은 일이라고 지적했다. 현지스님은 “두 가지를 바라다가 한 가지가 이루어졌다면 그것에 감사하고 만족할 줄 알아야합니다. 두 가지도 이루지 못하면서 세 가지가 이루어지길 바라는 건 욕심이고 탐욕입니다. 사바세계를 일컬어 ‘인토(忍土)’라고 부릅니다. 세상은 참으면서 살아가는 땅입니다”라고 당부의 말을 남겼다. 

불교에서는 우리의 생이 죽음으로 끝나는 것이 아니라 다음 생으로 이어진다고 말한다. 그러나 여기서의 ‘인과’와 ‘윤회’는 다음생에 대한 이야기가 아니라 지금의 삶에 대한 이야기라고 현지스님은 말한다. 우리의 생을 아름답게 가꾸어나가는 일이 우리가 스스로에게 해줄 수 있는 가장 커다란 선물이 아닐까.

The temple succeeding the spirit of Reverend Wonhyo

You can see Wonhyo Temple when walking up the road to the Mudeung mountain cabin. Famous for its beautiful scenery, Wonhyo Temple is estimated to be built around the King Jijeung or Beopheung of Silla Kingdom. Around 100 relics, mainly  statues of the Buddha, found during the reconstruction of the main building, demonstrates the Temple's long history covering from late Unified Silla to Chosun Dynasty. Hyun says "Wonhyo was enchanted by the beauty of this place and built a hermitage which was called Wonhyo Hermitage according to a story. The Hermitage was developed into a temple through reconstructions and extensions as time went by. But it was completely burnt down during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 and the Korea War but rebuilt to the current shape in 1982." 

The most popular place in the Temple is Hoeam Pavilion located in the front gate. The original purpose was to provide a study place for the monks but it was opened for public as people loved it so much. 

A small help becoming a big help
Hyun is serving as the Head of Life Sharing Movement Gwangju Headquarters. The Movement is to think others first and to share even a small thing with others so that we can create a bigger thing. Their activities include organ donation, hematogenous stem support, sharing tea with love, lovely lunch box, as well as donating rice, briquette and Kimchi in winter. Hyun says "we collected and donated $60,000 to 16 people through our regular voluntary concert and Hopeful Walking. We also gathered 155 people to donate their organs and 376 their hematogenous stem and sent blood donation certificates to Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital and Chosun University Hospital. We still think we have to do more activities to attract people's support and participation."

Hyun also is serving as Chairman of Gwangju Religious People's Association and Permanent Representative of North and South Exchange Association. Hyun continued "I think it's my duty to actualize the love and benevolence the Buddha taught us in reality." 

Life is helping each other and enduring
Hyun says that we need to be more tolerant towards other people if we want to live harmoniously. We need to live with our heart but not with our brain. Hyun continues "I thought I knew everything when I was young and it was only possible for me to share with others when I possess enough but I realized sharing comes from heart but not from physical things. The wise life I think is to complement each other well." Hyun also pointed out that it is unwise to try to control everything according to one's taste by saying "you need to be happy when you expected two but had one. It is greed if you expect three while you are not capable of achieving two. We call the world as 'enduring earth' because life is enduring." Hyun says 'cause and effect' and 'the eternal cycle of birth' of Buddhism are not about the next life but right here right now.
