Dreams of a better world with enthusiasm and devotion
Local young leaders taking the initiative in social development through participation, harmony, change and innovation
Kook Kyoung-il, president of SeoGwangju Junior Chamber

What matters most to develop a community is ‘person.’ However excellent technology and profuse funds there may be for use, without people’s efforts to lead development, that can be called ‘a dead society.’ Especially with people putting service for others and the community before one’s egoism, the society is obviously heading for a healthy and happy one.  SeoGwangju Junior Chamber is such an organization to cultivate future leaders and seek for a better society standing devotedly together, We met its president Kook Kyoung-il.

Devotion to society through youth and enthusiasm
SeoGwangju Junior Chamber (also called SeoGwangju JC) founded in April 1977 is a typical youth organization for this region with 38 years’ history. Junior Chamber movement initiated by Henry Giessenbier, the US, has developed into an international private organization for younger people between 20 and 42 years old to put into practice the four ideologies of developing leadership competence, local community, international friendship and business capability. This is why SeoGwangju JC engages in activities for developing the community each year.

They do many things from helping the alienated, including old people living alone, multicultural families, North defectors, grandparent-grandchild home and single-parent home, to childcare, traffic and other campaigns and tree-planting event for the environment, to which added a project for the mentally handicapped within the jurisdiction this year.

“At the beginning of this year, we carried out the project of visiting old people living alone and supporting heating expenses for the winter. In June this year, we are making preparations to invite 10 of each families from grandparent-grandchild home, single-parent home and multicultural home to leave for family camping. Though we are not spending much budget or engaging in many projects, we want to increase projects for the community steadily and give these people whatever little help we can.”

President Kook is getting along more busily than ever to fulfill his role as JC local president for one year’s term. He declared that he will make efforts to set up internal environment and lower the threshold of the chamber so that it may become a place to give one’s energy unsparingly and adapt to the organization very quickly.

In addition, he said he would endeavor to keep a strong bond and friendship with ‘Special friend meeting’ composed of seniors who have left JC after reaching 42 years old. Last March, they held a monthly joint meeting between the incumbents and seniors to build diverse partnerships sharing the knowhow’s piled up after a longtime JC activity. It was one of events for SeoGwangju JC to broaden its extent of activity.

Youth spirit responsible for our future
The late Mr.. Ahn Chang-ho said, ‘If the youth dies, the people will die, too.” Only when the youth supposed to lead the future generations exert themselves for social development with a proper and healthy mind, can the state and people achieve development. This is in the same vein with the ideology of Korea Junior Chamber. Under the slogan of ‘the future of the country is within the youth’s responsibility,’ numerous youths around the country are making efforts for social development. As one of the organizations, SeoGwangju JC is devoting itself to fulfill their social responsibilities and roles.

“There are so many things for us younger people to perform. The aim of such many things boils down to one thing – to make a society happier, more joyous and healthier toward a rich and strong country as well as local development we always cry out to the world.”

SeoGwangjoo JC’s membership is one of the largest in the nation. Regarding this, president Kook emphasized that a person with physical strength does not necessarily mean he is strong but how strong a philosophy he has can sustain his activity to fulfil the mission.

“Our JC is also called ‘Youth Officers Training School.’ It is predominantly because there are many things to learn in order to act as our JC members. It may be difficult to adapt to a social organization with importance attached to form, unlike ordinary ones, in this age of diverse cultures and ways of thinking prevailing, which also can cause difficulty running JC compared to the past. However, I still would like to guide our members to be saturated with JC’s basic philosophy and ideology while maintaining their own individuality.”

President Kook added that he hoped their activity would spread the virus of affirmation to the society. He said that the feeling of happiness he had with a lunch provided to the handicapped under s social welfare institution must also have been felt by SeoGwangju JC members who participated together, other volunteer workers and even the attendants at the restaurant. How about supposing the picture of our future to be drawn by those who are struggling to spread ‘a happy virus’ for making our society a better place to live in?
