대학이 원하는 논술 인재를 넘어 창의적 인재를 양성
“논리와 논의, 학교의 채점포인트 잡는 법에 포커스를 맞춘다”

프랑스의 수능과 같은 시험인 바칼로레아는 단답형 교육으로 따라갈 수 없는 지적인 창조성을 평가하는 시험이다. 여기에 착안해 수능 변별력의 대항마로 등장한 논술은 최상위권 학생들에게도 당락을 결정하는 아이템인데, 대학 논술에서는 각 대학이 요구하는 논술의 초점을 잡는 것이 제일 중요하다. 입시 논술의 핵심을 파악하여 안양 최고의 논술교육으로 평가받는 ‘지혜의 샘’ 유주미 원장에게서 그 비결을 들어보는 시간을 가졌다. 

잘 쓴 논술보다는 논술에 필요한 사고를 일깨우는 학원
“니가 진짜로 원하는게 뭐야”라는 히트곡이 있다. 만약 공부를 하는 목적을 모른다면 결국 목표를 잃고 헤매게 된다. 하지만 찾는다면 자신의 인생 뿐 아니라 장차 남의 인생을 가르치는 표지판 역할을 할 수도 있다. 증권사에서 한때 서비스 교육 담당으로 잘 나가던 유주미 원장은 자신의 재능과 직업적 장래성 사이에서 고민했다. 그리고 유 원장은 “현재 잘 되는 시장보다는 잘 될 시장이 무엇인가”를 고려해 논술 강사로 전향했다.

“논술이라면 보통 연로하신 남자 선생님들께서 딱딱하게 진행하는 정통, 혹은 전달식 논술을 떠올리신다. 반면 우리의 수업은 질문과 참여, 소통이 전제된 토론식 수업이 결합됐다” 유 원장을 더욱 유명하게 만들어 준 것은 학생의 목표에 따라 진행되는 맞춤형 교육법이다. 중하위권 학생들은 출제자의 의도를 읽고 파악하는 법을 익힌다. 또 중상위권은 질문의 의도를 생각해서 추론하는 쪽으로 유도한다. 상위권의 경우는 변별력을 감안해 주제를 던지고 창의적으로 논의의 쟁점을 찾도록 한다. 논술에 있어서 가장 기본적인 것은 독해와 분석력이라고 한다.

“그저 그럴 듯하게 문장만 채워놓은 논술은 채점자가 외면한다. 중요한 것은 학교별로 원하는 포인트가 있다는 것이다. 가장 기본적인 분석력부터 시작하여 대학이 묻는 바까지 찾아가는 과정의 추론 능력, 그 후 이 자리에서 그 문제가 어떠한 의미를 갖는지에 대한 창의력이 그것이다. 따라서 우리는 학생의 성향과 목표에 대한 정확한 이해를 바탕으로 맞춤별 수업을 진행한다” 강단 있어 보이는 유 원장이 좀 더 부드럽게 덧붙인다. “논술 하면, ‘나는 글에 자신 없다’며 지레 겁부터 먹는다. 하지만 글을 일종의 이야기 풀어가기로 생각하면 쉽게 해결된다. 일상적인 이야기로 시작해 요지에 접근하면, 학생들은 금방 이해하고 해결책을 말하곤 한다. 예를 들면 장남이 부모님을 모시지 않을 경우를 말하면, 그것을 무조건 윤리적인 면에서 접근해서 옳고 그름으로 귀결한다.

그러나 암묵적으로 전제되어 있는 것부터 고민할 필요가 있다. 암묵적 전제를 찾고, 이를 비판적으로 점검하는 과정을 통해 문제에 대한 합리적인 고민을 하는 것. 바로 이것이 대학 논술이다” 처음에는 미모의 젊은 여성이 원장 자리에 있다는 것에 놀란 학부형들도 유 원장에게 신뢰를 보이는 이유를 바로 이러한 교육 방침에서 짐작할 수 있다.

앞으로도 용도와 목적을 파악하는 맞춤형 지혜 심어주고파
유 원장은 논술의 진짜 목적에 대해 분명한 관점을 갖고 있다. “논술이란 입시뿐 아니라 고민해야 할 점과 상대방의 의도를 파악하는 기술을 길러 준다. 그것을 현실에 적용할 수 있다면 삶의 지혜까지 터득하는 것이다. 논술의 평가항목인 객관적 독해, 논증, 균형잡힌 사고는 삶속에서 합리적인 의사결정, 현명함과 겸양의 미덕을 배울 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 너무나도 멋진 과목이 아닌가. 나 역시 논술에서 이러한 점들을 배웠기에 학생들에게 알릴 수 있는 것이다” 유 원장은 독서논술과 입시논술을 다르게 접근한다. “틀림과 다름을 구별하는 능력은 독서를 통해 자라난다. 나를 바로잡고 상대를 더 이해할 수 있는 힘은 논술을 통해 강화된다” 학부형들이 가장 궁금해 하는, 올해 입시의 트렌드에 대해서도 “수능의 변별력이 약해지고 논술이 강화될 것”이라는 유 원장은 “인문계열의 경우, 모든 대학은 언어 논술을 기본으로 하되 특화된 유형이 제시된다. 연세대는 자료해석형이다. 그리고 고려대는 문과에서도 수리논술을 요구한다. 성균관대는 언어논술을 바탕으로 한 자료해석형, 또한 영어논술을 요구하는 곳도 있다. 고대의 경우 작년부터는 연결고리를 느슨하게 주어서 학생 스스로 논의점을 찾게끔 한다. 상위권 대학이 시도했으니 앞으로 다른 대학에서도 변화가 올 것이다”고 예측한다. 즉, 대학이 원하는 좋은 인재는 글을 잘 쓰는 것을 넘어서, 주어진 주제 안에서 창의성을 발휘한다는 것이다. “녹십자, 적십자 등에서는 논술로 승진시험을 치른다. 사회에 나와서는 자신의 의견을 얼마나 개진할 수 있는지를 논술로 측정하는 것이다. 사실 수능과 논술의 영역은 본질적으로 파워게임이라 입시논술의 파이가 커지는 데는 한계가 있다. 그래서 인문학 소양을 지닌 박사와의 1:1 토론 등을 통해 끊임없이 연구한다. 우리 지혜의 샘에서는 교육자적 마인드를 유지하면서 제대로 된 가르침을 주기 위해 언제나 고민하고 있다” 보기에는 작은 학원으로 보이는 지혜의 샘은 지난 10년 간 정진하여 소위 ‘글발’로 승부하는 논술업계에서 논술의 ‘트렌드’를 선도하는 작은 거인으로 자랐다. 유 원장의 ‘지혜의 샘’이 지닌 겸손한 정진과 체계적인 논술 시스템은 날카로운 시각으로 교육의 양과 질의 균형을 찾아내려고 하는 교육 소비자들의 까다로움을 충족시켰다. 또한, 박새슬 원장을 주축으로 한 대치 초중등 논술 프로그램은 그러한 만족의 결과물이다. ‘독서’와 근본적인 논술능력의 ‘활용법’을 연결하여 새로운 바람을 일으킨 유 원장의 승승장구가 계속되길 앞으로도 응원한다.

Thinking ability is more important than well written essay
There is a song called 'What do you really want?'. Likewise, if you do not know why you do it, you are likely to wander around without a purpose. But if you find it, you can even be a role model for those who are in the same stage you used to be. While working as a talented customer service trainer in a stock firm, Yu came to think about what she really want with her life. She focused on having a promising job for the future and decided to be a writing teacher. Yu says "writing is regarded as a boring subject taught by an elderly teacher but it can be a great fun with us as students can actively participate in the class." Yu is famous for providing customized training. With Yu, low ranked students can learn the art of analysing examiner's intent whereas high ranked students can learn the art of analysing examination questions. The basic element of writing a good essay is reading and analytical skills. Yu says "markers don't like the essay written without reasoning and analysis. As each school has its own tendency, students need to understand the intent of examiner and questions. And it is our job to analyse each school's tendency and provide the right information to students." Yu continues "students get afraid of writing even when they hear the word. But it can be a great fun if they take it as storytelling. They can start the story from daily life and finish it off with the point they want to make. It is good to avoid moral and right or wrong approach and find rationality to give well balanced criticism." School parents are impressed by Yu's beauty at first but they slowly give her more credit for her professional skills.

Providing analytical skills
Yu says about the purpose of writing an essay "writing enables you to have certain skills for analysing your life and other people's intention. By expressing it in writing you can build your skills such as rational thinking and decision making ability. It is a fantastic subject and I'm learning myself everyday through writing and I want to share this pleasure with students. That's why I love this job." Yu says that there is difference between reading and writing an essay. The ability to differentiate incorrectness from difference comes from reading. Yu predicts that the skill for writing good essays will be more advantageous in the university entrance examination this year. "Basically, all universities require a good writing skill but with different intent. Yonsei University, for example, prefers analytical skills whereas Korea University gives more credit for mathematical principle. The latter one recently is trying to provide weak relevance in the text so that students can find the points themselves from the text. Some universities also require essay in English." This can mean that many universities prefer students who are creative in making their points over just well written essay. Yu added "companies like Green Cross and Red Cross only promote their employees who have good writing skills. It means that making one's own point clearly is very important. We constantly have a meeting with the specialists in the field in pursuit of providing students better writing skills. All of our teachers in Wisenonsul are industry professionals who have open and creative mind."
