자임당의 치유는 몸이 ‘스스로 낫는’ 조건을 만들어주는 것

한의원의 고객 중 70%는 노인 혹은 여성이다. 눈에 보이지 않고 진단이 어려워 양약을 장복하다 증세를 키우는 병중에는 유독 여성에게서만 발병하는 병들이 많기 때문이다. 한의학에는 침과 뜸도 있지만, 진단 후에 자연에서 준 재료로 약을 달여 인체의 자생력과 기운을 북돋워주고 해로운 기운을 빼내는 치료법이 있다. 이러한 치료법으로 여성질환에 접근, 치료하는 자임당한의원 정현재 원장을 만나본다.

자임당 한의원의 정현재 원장은 어떤 증세에 어떤 약이 잘 듣느냐는 질문에 “자임당은 스스로 자(自), 맡길 임(任)에서 왔다. 한의학에서는 온도, 습도를 맞춰 몸이 스스로 낫는 조건을 만들면 치유가 된다고 한다. 양방에서는 체온과 체열, 습도를 고려하지 않지만 한의학에서는 인체의 조건을 정상에 맞추면 어떤 병이든 스스로 낫는 것이 치료의 원리”라고 한다. 보통 한의원에서는 수술 범주에 들어가지 않는 시술이나 침, 뜸, 부항, 봉독 방식을 많이 쓰지만, 정 원장은 한약을 사용해 독기를 빼고 열을 내리는 방식에 집중하고 있다. 그러다 보니, 수술을 기피하고 한의학을 찾는 경향이 많은 여성질환의 전문가가 된 것은 당연한 수순이었다. 열의 과잉으로 인하거나, 과잉된 수독(水毒)으로 인한 병이 주로 여성질환, 배뇨질환 등에 많기 때문이다. 이 병들은 한약으로 치료하면 가장 효과를 볼 수 있고, 여성들이 고민하는 생리불순, 불임, 난임은 양방의학이 손대기 어려운 영역에 있다. “여성질환의 근본이유는 대개 ‘수(水)’ 와 ‘열(熱)’ 이다. 현대 성인병인 대사증후군도 수독과 열이 쌓여서 생긴다. 과거 못먹고 사는 사람들이 많았던 시절과 달리 현대는 음식물의 과잉, 스트레스 등으로 인해 ‘열’의 시대라 한다. 주로 간과 가슴에 열이 쌓여 문제가 되는데, 특히 간열이 있으면 피가 탁해지고 어혈이 생긴다. 여성의 경우 생리혈의 배출이 잘 안되면 매달 혈액을 배출하는 자궁에도 피 찌꺼기가 쌓인다. 또한 가슴에 열이 쌓이면 불면, 불안, 두근거림으로 고생하기도 한다. 그래서 열을 내리고 과잉된 물을 배출하는 처방을 한다.”  

젊은 여성은 생리불순과 불임/난임치료 목적으로 방문한다면, 중년여성들은 소위 오줌소태라 불리는 배뇨장애로 자주 찾아온다. “열이 많으면 신장이 약해지고 배뇨장애가 찾아와 복진과 맥진을 해서 처방하며, 섣불리 물을 많이 마시다가는 과잉된 수분으로 붓기와 무릎통증, 소화장애 등 증상을 더 악화시킬 수도 있으므로 체질에 따라 물을 마시는 습관을 가져야 한다.” 예부터 한의학에 내려오는 ‘십병구담’(十病九痰)이라는 말은 열 가지 병 중 아홉 가지는 담, 즉 수독으로 인한 병이라는 뜻이므로, 그것을 조절해 주는 것이 치료에서 가장 중요하다고 정 원장은 덧붙였다.

중국 수천년의 지혜와 한의학에서 온 예방과 치료, 관리
중국어를 전공한 외고시절부터 한의과대학 재학시절 중의대를 자주 갔던 터에 중국어와 중국문화에 능통한 정 원장은 중국 의학에 대해서도 해박한 지식을 갖고 있다. 대한한방부인과학회 소속이자 중경학회, 상한론학회를 매주 참석하고 중국 의료서적과 논문 등 방대한 자료를 갈무리하는 노력도 게을리 하지 않는다. “후세방은 동의보감, 의종금감 등의 책에서 집대성한 후세 사람들의 처방으로 각기 논리가 다르고 많고 복잡하다. 반대로 한중일 삼국에서 공통적으로 많은 연구가 되고 있는 상한론은 한의학의 시작이며 장중경의 상한론(傷寒雜病論)에 입각하여 맥진, 복진을 하고 약으로 치료하는 방식이다. 상한론의 처방을 맞게 쓰면 효과가 빠르고 복용 후 몇 분 만에 몸의 상태가 바뀌는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 또한 오진의 가능성에 대비해 약을 항상 먹고 반응을 본 후 환자의 상태에 객관적으로 맞을 때만 본격적으로 약을 쓴다.” 한중일이 모두 연구하고 관심을 갖는 상한론 접근은 나라마다 조금씩 다르지만, 공통적인 것은 어떤 환자에게 어떻게 쓰는가가 중요하다고 한다. “난임 자체가 어혈이 쌓인 자궁과 하복부로 인한 문제인지라, 환자들은 모두 아랫배를 만졌을 때 아픈 경우가 많다. 그래서 약 100일에 걸쳐 어혈을 풀어주어 배꼽아래 어혈이 쌓인 것들이 빠지고 새롭게 깨끗한 피가 차오르도록 약을 써서 치료한다. 불규칙하던 주기가 안정에 접어들며 생리시의 통증과 함께 덩어리가 배출되는 현상도 사라지면 그 효과는 당사자가 더 잘 알게 된다. 고등학교 때부터 이런 증상을 방치하다 어른이 되어 난임이 되기도 하니 병이 커지기 전에 치료하는 것이 중요하다.” 정 원장은 질병이 발생하기 전, 생활 속 예방의 중요성을 강조한다. “유전, 선천적인 요인이 아닌 이상 치료방식에 따르다 보면 개선될 수가 있다. 그리고 빨리 낫기 위해서는 스트레스 방지 못지않게 식습관을 조절하는 일도 중요하다. 맵고 짜거나 기름진 음식이나 커피는 한의학적으로 열을 발생시키는 음식이라 자연에서 온 음식을 많이 먹는 게 좋다. 그래야 근본적으로 건강해진다.” 정 원장은 원래 한의원을 옮기기 전 하루 80-90명에 달하는 환자를 진료했다. 그렇지만 지금은 당시와 달리 한 사람 한 사람에 집중해서 100% 완치하는 그런 한의사가 되는 것이 목표라고 한다. 진료에 집중해서 많은 이들에게 건강을 되찾아 주고, 논문을 쓰며 지적 소양을 닦는데도 충실한 한의사가 있는 곳, 정 원장이 진료하는 자임당 한의원이 나날이 명성을 얻어가는 것은 당연한 일이다.

Treating subfertility, infertility and female diseases with Sanghanron
The name Jaimdang comes from 'ja' meaning as oneself and 'im' as to entrust. Jeong says "Korean medicine tells that if you keep right temperature and moisture in your body you can make it cure diseases itself. In western medicine, on the other hand, does not pay much attention to temperature, heat and moisture of the body." But Jaimdang is even different among many Korean medicine clinics as it uses the method to reduce the heat of the body and to release toxin by avoiding existing treatment such as acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping and apitoxin. This method made Jeong to become a female disease specialized Korean medical doctor. Women usually try to cure their diseases without a surgery. It is known that unbalanced temperature and excessive amount of toxin in the body cause various female and urinary diseases. Especially subfertility, infertility and menstrual irregularity are the difficult part for western medicine to cure while Korean medicine can give maximum effect for them. jeong says "the main cause of female diseases is closely related with water and heat. Metabolic syndrome also happens by accumulated toxin and heat in the body. Unlike in the past in which people had nothing much to eat, modern people over eat and have considerable amount of stress which, according to jeong, we call it 'the age of heat' in Korean medical terms. The body piles the heat at liver and chest and this cause murky and extravasated blood. As for women, if menstruation is not regular, the blood gets accumulated in the womb. Also the heat piled on the chest can cause insomnia and anxiety. Therefore, I prescribe medicine that can reduce the heat and release the toxin." Young women usually visit jeong with menstrual irregularity, subfertility and infertility while older women with urinary problems. jeong says "too much heat weakens kidney and causes urinary diseases and this can be treated with ventral and pulsational methods. The amount of water taking in is also important as it can cause swelling, knee ache and indigestion when taking too much. Ancient medicine tells that 9 out of 10 disease are caused by water toxin in the body and therefore it is important to keep the balance.

jeong studied Chinese at a foreign language high school and oriental medicine at Jungui University in Shanghai, China. jeong is a member of The Society of Korean Medicine Obstetrics and Gynecology, participates every week in Jungkyung Society and Sanghanron Society and is archiving Chinese medical books and essays. jeong says "Husebang (oriental medical book) is made by posterity who borrowed many elements from Donguibogam and Uijonggeumgam (oriental medical books) and contains many theories but the book is complicated. Sanghanron written by Jinkyung Jang, on the other hand, is used broadly in China, Korea and Japan and it tells to cure disease with medicines alongside providing ventral and pulsational treatment. If it is prescribed correctly according to Sanghanron you can feel your body getting better within several minutes. However, the medicine should be used carefully after the test whether it can be effective for the patient." Three countries apply Sanghanron differently but the common fact is that they basically focus on how to apply and to what kind of patients. jeong says "infertility comes from the blood-accumulated womb and lower abdomen. That's why patients feel pain when touched the lower part of the belly. This can be cured by releasing the accumulated blood to run the menstruation on a regular basis through a 100 day treatment period. The symptom above mentioned can start as early as high school years so it is important to find and cure it at an earlier stage." Meanwhile, jeong emphasizes on having a regular life style to prevent diseases. jeong says "unless it is hereditary, you can cure diseases by changing the treatment method and this should be supported by correct eating habits. I recommend people to eat more natural food than salty and spicy food." Before jeong opened his own clinic, he treated 80 to 90 patients a day but it has now become his goal to cure a patient 100% regardless the number of visitors.
