Cultural diplomat who traveled around the world
Artist Soonok Kim

Inspirational resource from Korean style to Latin America's nature
Kim is famous for her work Iguassu Falls that expresses strong energy hyper-realistically. Kim is praised for her works that contain the elements of Korean style and the nature of Latin America. Kim says "there are many elements in the Korean art and culture. I was born a Christian but I found inspiration  from Korean culture as I studied its tradition and cultural assets." Born in Seoul, Kim yearned the landscapes of countryside where a look-out shed and children's stealing watermelons make us return to the innocence of childhood. She actually painted many Korean landscapes so that she could show our beautiful nature to the world but it was disconnected when her family moved to Paraguay. Kim says "I took 120 of my works with me to Paraguay. As luck would have it, the Korean Embassy there held a solo exhibition of my works on the occasion of national holiday and this led me to held another exhibition at the President Palace of Paraguay as the first Asian and I became popular. I received numerous inquiries from many diplomats from the world to hold an exhibition at their place. I then held various exhibitions including the National Gallery of Argentina, the UN Headquarters in New York, the OAS National Museum in Washington as well as Africa, Europe and Asia."

Kim recently participated in the ceremonial exhibition that celebrates the 40th anniversary of Korea-Myanmar Diplomatic Ties and held an exhibition at Karachi National Museum of Pakistan. She is also scheduled to hold an exhibition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Korea-Paraguay Diplomatic Relations. It seems that Kim has been playing a role of civil diplomat. Kim continues "traditional Korean culture and landscapes are the main themes of my works. That's why I wore Korean costume at my exhibitions in Latin America. I was conspicuous but I enjoyed spreading Korean culture to the world." Kim also proved her talent in teaching as she taught theory of color at Hongik University, western paintings at Kyunghee University, art management in the Graduate School at Sangmyung University and art theory and art & culture education at Dankook University. Kim also painted a large size (290.9cm × 218.2cm) historic painting of former president Park and it is now a permanent collection of the Historic Archive of Cheong Nam Dae.

Kim says "I feel honored to paint the picture. I basically do everything relating to art from exhibition, art education, art criticism, writing essays, running galleries, collection art works, holding competition to being an art director of art festivals. I've been running Kyunghyang Shinmun Gallery and United Gallery for a long time and widened my understanding about art and artists. I also feel proud that I built a charity hospital at Swaziland to provide free medical services for those who cannot afford medical treatment."

From naturalism artist to humanism artist
Kim's two works that are hung at the wall of the office building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs show how Kim expressed about humanism and happiness. Pine Tree (1134cm x 910cm) shows public servant's indomitable will and integrity whileas Mac (162cm x 130cm) is painted by using the paper mulberry which does not decay or tear. Kim said "I expressed indomitable will and integrity which are the virtues of diplomats. Pine Tree is representational and Mac is abstract. I also wrote the Korean alphabet to look like they are engraved on the right side of Mac." Many of Kim's large scale works are housed in major places. Iguassu Falls (3240cm x 2600cm) and Geumgang Mountain (3240cm x 2600cm), for example, are housed in Kyunghee University and they show the majestic nature. Kim does not regard painting as labor. She published two books of her paintings that have more than 200 pages each.

Kim says "the first book is 'The Story of Korea' and the second one is 'The Sound of Life'. I want to make my third book about humanism and happiness that transcend race, nationality and religion. I want to express my experience and new feeling on those works." But Kim's vigor does not stop here. Kim says "I've traveled many countries but I still want to visit the countries I haven't because by doing that I learn their culture and many other things. That is why it is meaningful for me to have exhibitions abroad. I'm currently planning to hold invitation exhibitions at official residence of Tunisia and Sahara." A picture tells much more stories than thousands of words.
