동물의약품기업비전확립과 한돈한류, 수의축산산업의 균형점 찾겠다
“양돈수의사회와 버박코리아의 중책을 맡은 동물산업 전문가”

시베리안 허스키를 인기견종으로 만든 ‘닥터 스쿠르’ 시리즈는 수의학 전공자들이 졸업 후 수의사 뿐 아니라 제약회사, 식품업계 및 실험데이터 연구소 등에 고루 진출할 수 있다는 개념을 우리에게 알려주었다. 수의사로 시작해 동물의약품회사의 마케팅 중역을 거쳐 양돈수의사회장과 ㈜버박코리아의 경영진으로 재직 중인 신창섭 대표의 활동처럼 말이다. 신 대표를 만나 6차 산업으로서의 동물산업이 지닌 잠재력과 경쟁력, 개인적 목표에 대해 정리해 보았다.
프랑스 글로벌 동물제약회사 국내경영진이 된 영업전문가
신창섭 대표는 ㈜버박코리아에 대해 “프랑스를 본거지로 둔 세계 8위의 동물의약 전문 글로벌 회사로, 보통 제약회사에서 인체용과 동물용을 함께 다루는 반면 여기는 동물전용제품에만 포커스를 맞춰 더 전문적”이라고 설명한다. 그는 서울대졸업후에 수의사 자격을 취득하고 김재원 대표의와 조양축산이라는 이름으로 버박의 한국 대리점을 합류한 뒤, 1997년 ㈜버박코리아를 합자회사 형식으로 창립하자 마케팅 차장으로 시작해 부지사장에 오르기까지 7년간 근무했다. 이후에는 이직하여 화이자(현재 조에티스)의 아시아 양계사업부 대표로 상해로 건너갔으며, 글로벌제약기업 베링거잉겔하임에서 4년간 상무로 근무한 후 지난해 ㈜버박코리아로 돌아와 대표이사로 취임하게 된다.
건국대 MBA출신으로서 캘리포니아주립대 CEO과정을 마친 신 대표는 경영자로 거듭나며 3가지 목표를 제시한다. “우선 첫 번째로 고객관리에 포커스를 둔다. 두 번째는 내부와 외부 소통 및 분야별 팀웍을 중시한다. 마지막으로 퍼포먼스 오리엔티드스를 통해 소속감을 강화하는 것이다” 업계에서 잔뼈가 굵은 신 대표는 직원들의 애사심을 기르기 위해서, 목표를 이루면 성과를 공유하는 정책을 제시하고, 전문성을 강화하기 위해 민.관.학이 주최하는 교육프로그램에 적극 참가할 예정이라고 한다. 현재 ㈜버박코리아에서는 반려동물을 위해 WHO에서 먼저 인정받은 광견병 예방 경구백신 래비겐사그2, 반려견종 파보백신인 파보젠, 경제동물 쪽에서는 양돈용 버바제스트, 말에게 필요한 구충제 등을 밀고 있다. 축산업과 동물의약품 업계는 반드시 상생해야 하는 위치에 있으므로, 제조업체와 수입판매업체가 협력하여 지속적인 산학협동 형식의 연구와 약효검증도 반드시 필요하다. 이미 연평균 수익의 10%를 제품연구에 사용하고 있지만, 인지도상승과 유통구조 개선을 통해 ㈜버박코리아의 입지를 더욱 다져가려 한다. 또한 신 대표는 국내에서 시행되는 반려동물 전자인식표 산업을 중요하게 생각하며, 본격적으로 홍보하고 발전시킬 생각이다.
양돈수의사회를 이끌며 한돈의 한류를 이끌어갈 것
작년 10월, 수의학대학을 졸업한 20대 수의사에서 교육과 업계, 공무원, 산업분야별 전문가인 60대까지 500여 명의 다양한 연령대로 구성된 한국양돈수의사회에서는 신 대표를 차기 회장으로 선임하였다. 1981년 창립하여 정부 정책에 건의할 만큼 전문성을 지닌 협회의 회원들은 신 대표가 경영자로서, 업계를 정확하게 파악하고 회원들의 소통에 기여할 것이라는 믿음으로 그를 선택하였다. 그래서 양돈 생산자들과 학계, 기관, 소비자들의 의견을 수렴하고, 농/축산업에 양돈업이 기여하는 장점, 경쟁력을 가질 수 있는 부분을 융합하고 새로운 산업기반을 제시하겠다는 신 대표의 포부에 주변의 기대가 크다.
“1월부터 임기를 시작했다. 지금 제약분야에서 반려동물, 그리고 축산용인 경제동물의 비중은 10대 90이고 매출도 같은 수준이다. 그럼에도 부족한 분야가 바로 양돈 산업이다. 블루오션인 셈이다. 반대로 생각해보자면 우리나라는 식품안전관리인증제를 통해 미국에는 닭을, 중국에는 신선우유를, 홍콩에는 돼지고기를 수출하고 있을 정도다. 그러니 양돈도 부가가치 산업으로서 충분히 경쟁력이 있다. 양돈수의사회 회장으로서 한돈수의기술 마케팅에 투자할 것이고, 이 분야를 3-4년 안에 활성화시킬 계획이 있다. 한류와 한돈산업을 결합해 중국 요우커들을 대상으로 1,2,3차 산업의 융합으로 정점에 있는 6차 산업을 진행할 것이다.
또 일본의 시설, 노하우는 많이 선진화되어 있어서, 수의사 관련전문가를 통해 그 기술을 습득해 전 아시아에 전파할 생각이다. 오는 10월에는 마닐라에서 아시아 양돈수의사 심포지움(APVS)이 개최되는데, 한국의 연구내용을 적극 발표하여 아시아 내에서의 입지를 넓히고 싶다. 먼저 출발하여 리드하는 것이 바로 블루오션의 첫걸음이다” 그러기 위해 신 대표는 한돈협회, 양돈연구회, 산업동물 수의사회, 대한수의사회와 소통하며 산업을 구성할 요소들을 공유해가려 한다.
창조적인 경영인과 조언자역할로 사회공헌에 앞장서고파
신 대표는 ㈜버박코리아와 양돈수의사회의 활동 영역이 겹치는 부분에서 시너지 효과를 기대하고 있다. 그가 상생과 파트너십을 강조하는 것은 시장경제순환으로 이어지기 때문이다. 사람도 개혁하고 서비스도 개혁한다는 경영철학을 통해, 기존 고객들의 충성도를 높이고 새로운 고객들을 잘 관리하고자 한다. 수의과 대학생, 인턴 수의사들은 미래의 고객이나 회원이 될 수도, 그리고 기업의 차기 인재가 될 수도 있기 때문이다. 그래서 이러한 인적자원을 위해 학생들의 기업 현장학습, 전국수의과 협의회와 손잡은 제약산업 관련 강의를 계속하며 관리하고 있다.
“국내 동물약품산업은 인체의약품보다는 세계시장에서 입지가 높다. 그래서 수출, 투자 R&D, 인재와 시설 확보를 꾸준히 해나가 안정적인 기반을 다지려 한다” 신 대표는 적어도 60세까지는 현직 동물제약업계 전문경영인, 양돈수의사회장 경험을 바탕으로 으로서 분야별 조언을 아끼지 않겠다고 전한다. 이후에는 다국적 기업에서의 경험을 살려 해외 네트워크를 통한 수출에 기여하고, 한국 동물약품업체들을 위한 컨설턴트로 활동할 생각이다.
특히 2년 전부터 각광받는 승마산업에 필수적인 말에 대한 지식과 관심이 커서, 10년 뒤에는 말을 교육, 치료하는 프로그램으로써 승마산업에 참여할 포부를 보였다. 그리고 신 대표는 전북 양돈장 산업을 진행하고 있어서, 장차 한국의 양돈이 베트남, 필리핀, 중국 및 해외에 진출할 때 현지에서 관리자나 경영자로서 사업을 추진할 뜻을 보였다. 경영자로서 반드시 갖추어야 할 사회공헌에 대해서도 언급하는 신 대표는 재능기부, 소외받는 사람을 돕는 단체참여에 관심이 많다. 그래서 개인 차원에서든 회사 차원에서든 반드시 그 움직임에 동참할 것이라고 한다. 서초구청에서 진행된 13회 ‘장미와의 아름다운 손길’이라는 자선 바자회에 기부한 것도 그런 연유에서다. “늘 5년, 그리고 10년을 내다보고 미래를 준비한다”는 신 대표의 건강한 나눔을 따르는 삶, 작게는 동물산업에 이바지하고 크게는 국가경쟁력을 높여나갈 그의 신념을 응원해 본다.

Marketing expert who became a Korean director of French global animal medicine pharmaceutical company
CEO Shin Chang-Seob explained about <VirbacKorea>, “This Company is the 8th top animal medicine professional company based in France in the world. Most pharmaceutical companies are using humans and animals for the test, but this company is focusing on animal only products, so it is more professional.” He graduated Seoul National University and gained the vet license and joined Virbac’s Korean agency with a name of <JOYANG HUSBANDRY> by Kim Jae-Won and became a deputy head of business when <VirbacKorea> was set up to be a limited partnership in 1997. Since then, he worked for 7 years until he became a vice-governor. After that, he went to Shanghai representing Pfizer (now, Zoetis)’s Asia poultry Business and worked for 4 years at a global pharmaceutical company, Boehringer-ingelheim as a director. But, last year, he returned back to <VirbacKorea> and became a CEO. He took a MBA course at Kon-Kuk University and finished a CEO course at University of California and as for a top head of company, he is suggesting three goals.
“First of all, we are concentrating on the customer service. The second goal is buildup the tight teamwork of internal, external communication. The last thing is that we are strengthening a sense of belonging via performance-oriented concept.”
CEO Shin plans to suggest the policy of sharing the results when the goal is made, for boosting the loyalty of the company, and join some educational programs hosted by civil, government and school to be stronger to professionalism. Now, <VirbacKorea> company is promoting an oral vaccine for rabies, Rabigen Mono that has passed the test from WHO and for companion animals, Virbagest for swine in economic livestock and anthelmintic for horse etc. As livestock industry and animal medicine industry have to be a win-win system, it is mandatory to test the result of the medicine and constant studies between schools and industries. <VirbacKorea> has already spent 10% of annual profits in research and developing but he wants to establish a solid foothold in Korea by awareness raising and improving distribution structure. Also, CEO Shin is thinking of the electronic dog tag industry in Korea, so he will advertise and develop it more than before.
Leading the Korean wave coming along with Korea Association Swine Veterinary
Last October, Korea Association Swine Veterinary consisted of about 500 members who are from 20’s vet doctors after graduation and 60’s educator, officers and experts from industrial parts in a various age range assigned CEO Shin for a new president. Members who are professional since 1981 selected him with trust on him who will see the industry correctly and help the communication among the members. Because of that, there is a big expectation for what he is going to do. He said that he would listen to farmers, academy, organizations and customers’ opinions and suggest a new paradigm to have benefits and competences of swine industry to agricultural/livestock industry.
“I started this position from this January. Currently, in the pharmaceutical department, the ratio of companion animals and economic animals is 10 to 90 and the turnover is almost same. Even though it is, swine industry is in the shortage. It means this is a blue ocean industry. We are just exporting chicken to the states, fresh milk to China, and pork to Hong Kong via food safety management certification system. Swine has enough competiveness as an additional value industry. I have a plan to activate this department within 3 or 4 years. I will precede the 6th industry that is standing on a peak by convergence of primary, secondary and tertiary industries targeting Chinese people with combining Korean wave trend and Korean swine industry. And I will send some experts related to animal doctors to study Europe advanced establishment and know-how because they are ahead of us a lot and then will spread it to all over the Asia. In October, there will be Asian Pig Veterinary Symposium (APVS) in Manilla and I would like to build up Korean Veterinary foothold widely in Asia first. Staring first to lead is the first step to be close to the blue ocean.
For that, CEO Shin is going to share factors to make up for the industry via communication with Korean pork association, swine institute, industrial veterinary association and Korean veterinary medical association(KUMA).
Wants to lead a social contribution as for a creative CEO and advisor
CEO Shin is expecting some synergy effect from some part overlapped between <VirbacKorea> and swine veterinary association activities. The reason why he is emphasizing the partnership is that will be an economic circulation. He would like to manage new customers with his philosophy that he changes people and service since students for veterinary and animal doctor on the internship could be a member or a customer and even next talent of the company in the future. Therefore, he is running some lecture programs continuously for pharmaceutical industry associated with national veterinary colleges and students’ company tour for the human resources. “Korean animal medicine industry has a higher position rather than human medicine products in the world. So, I would like to keep managing exporting, investment R&D, human power and facilities security for the safe ground.” CEO Shin said he will not mind giving advices to any part of this industry until he is 60.
Afterwards, he will contribute for exporting via international network using his experience that he used to work for overseas companies for many years and work as a consultant for Korea animal medicine companies. Especially, from 2 years ago, he is getting more interested in some necessary knowledge and attention of horse industry, which is getting more popular, so he showed his aspiration for the horse industry in 10 years. And he is doing some swine business in Jeonbuk, so he said he will like to do the business as a manager on the spot when the pig industry is going to Vietnam, Philippines, China and other countries.
For a social contribution that every CEO has to have for the country, CEO Shin is intrigued in talent donation and some organization helping the neglected people. So, he said he will join any movement that kind of activities in person or from company. Actually, he donated some to a charity bazaar that was the 13th beautiful hand with famous singer “Jang Mi-hwa” hosted by SEOCHO office and this is from his willingness. According to him, he is always preparing for 5 years and 10 years future before him. His healthy life to share and is what we will cheer his belief to contribute for animal industry as a small part and raising the national competition as a big goal.
