청주대학교, 생명공학 이끌 전진기지 구축
세계적 바이오 혁신 클러스터 조성에 기여할 터
청주대학교 이공대학 바이오메디컬학과 이명선 학과장
20세기 후반 생명공학 산업이 태동함에 따라 세계 각국에서는 국가 경쟁력 확보 방안의 일환으로 생명공학 인재를 양성하기 시작했다. 청주대학교 바이오메디컬학과는 1989년 유전공학과 설립을 시작으로 1995년 대학원 개설, 2013년 바이오메디컬학과로 정식 명칭을 변경하며 국내 생명공학 연구와 인재양성에 큰 기여를 해왔다. 특히 바이오메디컬학과는 21세기 동북아 생명공학을 주도할 산·학·연·관의 고도화 바이오혁신 클러스터인 오송첨단의료복합단지 내에 조성된 오송바이오캠퍼스로 새로 이전하면서 많은 관심과 기대를 모으고 있다.
오송바이오캠퍼스 시대를 열다
정부는 의약 및 바이오산업을 미래 전략산업으로 집중 육성하기 위해 충청북도 오송 지역에 국가산업단지 조성을 완료했다. 이에 따라 식약처 및 질병관리본부를 포함한 6대 국책기관과 신약개발지원센터 등 4대 핵심연구지원시설을 집적화 하며 국내 바이오산업을 적극 지원, 육성하고 있다.
청주대학교 바이오메디컬학과는 세계적인 바이오 클러스터로 만들어갈 오송첨단의료복합단지에 가장 먼저 진출한 학과이자 산학협력 친화형학과로 주목받고 있다. 특히 단지 내에 조성된 오송바이오캠퍼스는 충북산학융합본부, 기업연구관 및 교육기관이 함께 자리하며 대학과 기업을 통해 충북 바이오산업과 고급인력 연계를 위한 기반을 마련했다. 오송바이오캠퍼스에 입성한 대학은 청주대학교 바이오메디컬학과를 비롯해 충북대학교(약학과·제약학과), 충북도립대학(바이오생명의약과)이 있다. 이외에 오송 KTX역과의 5분 거리, 대중교통, 1일 3회의 셔틀버스의 운행으로 청주대학교 본교와의 접근성이 용이하다.
이명선 학과장은 오송바이오캠퍼스로의 이전 첫 해인만큼 만반의 준비를 하고 있다. 그는 “우선 바이오캠퍼스에서의 적응과 바이오 혁신 클러스터의 기반을 마련하기 위해 산업체와 연계한 교육과정을 개발하고, 현장 맞춤형 인재 양성을 위해 노력하고 있습니다”라고 언급했다. 또한 충북산학융합본부를 통해 산업체와의 연계를 추진하고, 학생들이 다양한 분야로 진출할 수 있도록 진로와 취업의 범위를 확장하는데 힘쓰고 있다고 덧붙였다.
산학융합, 현장 맞춤형 교육에서 부터
최근 여러 분야에 걸쳐 산학융합이 한창이다. 특히 현장에서 이뤄지는 산학연계는 그 의미가 남다르다. 청주대학교 바이오메디컬학과는 산업단지 내 보건의료산업 분야의 BT 전문인력 양성과 실용 위주의 교과과정을 운용하게 될 학과의 교과과정 중에서 ‘현장실습’과 ‘R&D인턴십’, ‘프로젝트랩’ 교과목에 집중하고 있다. 동시에 산학융합조성사업의 일환으로 기업체에 재직 중인 직원들을 대상으로 실무 역량을 강화시키는 비학위과정, 특성화 고등학생을 대상으로 취업과 실무에 도움을 주는 고교생 현장교육(선취업/후진학), 기업에 근무하면서 대학이나 대학원 진학의 문을 열어주는 계약학과 등의 다양한 형태의 산학융합사업을 운영하고 있다. 이명선 학과장은 “현장 맞춤형 교육을 바탕으로 산업현장에 적응할 수 있는 인재육성은 기업의 연구개발에 필요한 인프라와 동시에 필요 인력을 갖출 수 있게 될 것입니다”라고 설명했다.
현장실습 교과목은 새로 신설된 교과목으로 과거의 이론 위주의 수업에서 벗어나 현 사회가 원하는 인재 개발을 위해 실무능력 및 현장 상황을 미리 실습, 학습하는 것에 초점을 맞췄다. 학생들이 졸업 후 사회에 첫 발을 내딛었을 때 빠른 적응력을 바탕으로 경쟁력 있는 인재를 육성하기 위한 것이다.
R&D인턴쉽 교과목은 4학년 졸업 예정 학생 중 해당기간[2학기/09.01~12.31(4개월)]동안 기업체 또는 연구기간에서 현장실습 또는 연구원으로 재직하면서 인턴십을 수행하는 시스템이다. 인턴 활동을 통해 졸업 후 진로 결정에 도움을 줄 수 있도록 편성돼있다.
마지막으로 프로젝트 랩 교과목은 산업체들이 요구하는 인재상이 바뀌고 있는 지금의 상황을 파악해 각 분야에서 원하는 능력을 갖춘 학생을 배출하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 실무역량을 갖춘 인재를 양성하고, 산업체와 교육현장의 미스매치를 해결하는 교육 개선을 통해 산업현장과 교육현장이 연계되는 시스템을 확립하기 위함이다.
동북아 생명공학 주도할 바이오혁신 클러스터
세계적으로 바이오산업은 클러스터 형성이 중요하다. 그 특징 중 하나가 관련 산업이 한 지역에 집중돼 있다는 것이다. 바이오산업에서 앞서나가는 미국의 경우 매사추세추, 샌디에이고 등 일부지역을 중심으로 집중돼 있다.
오송바이오캠퍼스 역시 오송첨단의료복합단지와 그 궤를 함께하고 있다. 청주대학교 바이오메디컬학과는 보다 효과적인 인력양성을 위해 관련 협의체를 구성했다. 현재 CJ헬스케어, 한국기초과학지원연구원, 코시스바이오, 메타바이오메드, 라파젠, 코아스템 등 산업체 및 연구기관과의 연계를 통한 현장실습 및 인턴십 활동을 수행하고 있다. 이명선 학과장은 “대학과 산업체가 함께 프로젝트 랩에 참여하며 현장맞춤형 인력을 양성하고 산학융합 R&D 지원을 받아 업체와의 협력으로 신제품 개발 및 매출 향상에도 도움을 주고 있습니다”라고 답했다.
이외에 바이오메디컬학과는 지난 4월 20일 국립보건원(NIH) 국립의과학지식센터와의 협의체를 구성함으로써 미국 국립생물정보센터(NCBI)에 버금가는 국립의과학도서관 및 시설을 이용할 수 있게 되었다. 최신 의과학 지식정보를 보다 쉽고 빠르게 공유해 보건의료분야 연구 활성화에도 크게 도움이 될 것으로 기대되고 있다. 이에 이명선 학과장은 앞으로 더 많은 협의체를 구축하기 위해 청주대학교 및 학과 교수들도 최선의 노력을 다하고 있으며, 가족회사 형식의 MOU 체결을 통해 학과와 산업체가 서로 Win-Win 할 수 있는 시스템을 구축해 나아갈 계획이라 밝혔다.
끝으로 이명선 학과장은 바이오메디컬학과가 오송바이오캠퍼스로 이전하기까지 많은 우여곡절이 있었지만, 이를 계기로 청주대학교의 강력한 경쟁력을 확보할 수 있는 기회가 될 수 있길 바랐다. 오송바이오캠퍼스에서의 첫 시작을 연 바이오메디컬학과를 토대로 지역 발전을 선도하는 대학, 충북도민의 사랑받는 대학, 구성원이 자긍심을 갖는 청주대학교로 거듭날 수 있길 희망한다.

Opens an Osong Bio-Campus period
The government has completed making a national industrial complex at Osong region of Chungbuk in order to focally rear medicine and bio-industry as a future strategic industry. Accordingly, the government is positively supporting and fostering domestic bio-industry by accumulating six major state-run institutions including FDA and Korea Center for Disease Control and 4 major core research support facilities including New Drug Development Support Center.
Cheongju Univ. Department of Biomedical Science was the first one to live in Osong High-tech Medical Complex, which is headed for a global bio-cluster based on industry-academy cooperation. Especially Osong Bio-campus set up in the complex comprises Chungbuk Industry-Academy Convergence Headquarters, Enterprise Research Hall and Educational institutions as the basis for connecting Chungbuk bio-industry and advanced professionals through universities and companies. Osong Bio-campus also embraces Chungbuk University, college of pharmacy (Dept, of pharmacy, Dept. of manufacturing pharmacy), Chungbuk Provincial Univ. (Dept. of Biomedical science and pharmacy). This department at Osong campus is five minutes’ distance from Osong KTX station and easily accessible to Cheongju Univ. main campus with public transportations and shuttle buses running three times a day. the Dean of the Department of Biomedical Science Lee, Myeong-Seon is making full preparations for the first-year transfer of the department to Osong Bio-campus. She said, “First of all, we are working to adapt to Bio-campus, develop a curriculum to associate with companies to lay foundation on bio-innovation cluster and rear site-customized able personnel.” She added that she is driving forward connecting with companies through Chungbuk Industry-Academy Conversion Headquarters and seeking to expand the scope of careers and employments so that students may enter into diverse spheres.
Industry-Academy Convergence starting with site-customized education
Recently, industry-academy convergence is at its peak, and especially, connection between the two at the site has much significance. Cheongju Univ. Department of Biomedical Science is focusing on “hands-on training’ ‘R&D internship,’ and ‘project lab’ of its practice-oriented curriculum to be operated for rearing BT professionals in the field of healthcare industry within the industrial complex. It is also operating non-degree courses to enhance practical capability of company workers, specialized high school students’ work experience to help with employment and practice (employment and then schoolwork), contract department to open the door to college or graduate school while working for a company, etc. The Dean of the Department of Biomedical Science Lee, Myeong-Seon explained, “Our rearing able persons based on site-customized education will provide companies with needed professionals as well as infrastructure for their R&D.”
The subjects of hands-on training have been newly established focusing on practicing and learning working ability and field situation in advance to develop talents needed by the current society unlike the past theory-oriented class. It is aimed to rear competitive able ones who can adapt to situations quickly in their first career job after graduation. R&D internship class is the system for the last period at school [2nd semester/ Sep 1 through Dec. 31 (4 months)] to carry out internship working on the field or as researcher at a company or research institute. It has been organized to help the students make decisions about career through the activity of internship.
Finally, project lab class is aimed to turn out students equipped with abilities wanted by industrial companies by grasping the changing situation that asks for different types of talent. It is to rear able persons with practical capability and establish a system to connect industrial and education scenes through improved education that can work out mismatch between the two.
Bio-innovation cluster to lead the biotechnology of northeast Asia
Globally, for bio-industry, it is important to form a cluster. One characteristic is that related industries are concentrated on one region. In the US, a leader in this industry, it is concentrated on some parts including Massachusetts and San Diego.
Osong Bio-campus is in the same context as Osong Advanced Medical Complex. Cheongju Univ. Department of Biomedical Science constituted a related consultative body to rear professionals more effectively. Currently, it conducts hands-on training and internship activity through association with companies and institutes, such as CJ Healthcare, Korea Basic Science Institute, Cosis Bio, Meta Biomed, Rafagen and Corestem. the Dean of the Department of Biomedical Science Lee, Myeong-Seon answered, “University and company co-participate in the project lab to rear site-customized professionals and help develop new products and increase sales in partnership with companies by the support from Industry-Academy Convergence R&D.”
Besides, Dept. of Biomedical Science composed a consultative body with National Center for Medical Science Information under NIH, which has given access to its library and facilities almost only second to NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information). This is expected to boost research activities in the field of healthcare by sharing updated medical science knowledge and information easily and quickly. Prof. Lee declared that Cheongju Univ. and department professors are giving best efforts to build more consultative bodies with a plan for a win-win system between department and companies through signing MOUs in the form of family concern.
There have been many turns and twists until Dept. of Biomedical Science relocated to Osong Bio-campus, says Prof. Lee, Myeong-Seon, hoping that Cheongju Univ. has a strong competitiveness through this opportunity. Based on Dept. of Biomedical Science starting with Osong Bio-campus, it is expected that Cheongju Univ. will lead the community development as a prestigious university loved by the provincial people.
