Top research and training institute in the next generation catalyst field

Creating synergy technology by converging chemistry and chemical engineering

Fostering talented students in basic and advanced science

Inha University’s Center for Design and Applications of Molecular Catalysts is focusing on the development of the core technology for creating the future industry by converging chemistry, which provides basic principles for applied science, and chemical engineering. The team’s goal is to be listed among the world’s 100 graduate schools in the field by fostering talented students through systematic training programs. 21 professors, 140 graduate students and 4 new researchers are working together in the team under the budget of $1M per year. The team is working really hard to build high level training infrastructure and industry-academic cooperation.

The team leader Lee says “our goal is to create synergy technology based on catalyst technology that can cover from basic science and its application by converging chemistry and chemical engineering. Chemistry has many advantages in organic and bio fields and nano technology, and chemical engineering in process, separation and catalyst fields.

The team has been through 2 years of introductory period and is working on building systematic and balanced training system.” The team is consisted of 5 sub-teams which are ‘molecular catalyst design and convergence’, ‘energy convergence catalyst’, ‘eco-friendly catalyst’, ‘organic and bio catalyst’ and ‘separation and process’. The team also has successfully carried out (and still carrying out one or two) three large scale national projects which are ‘high energy matter specialized research institute ($13M support fund)’, ‘nano precision chemistry convergence technology center ($15M)’ and ‘organic hybrid molecular research team ($700,000 per year).

Catalyst research that contributes to creating new industries

The team has achieved sound results through international exchanges and industry-academic cooperation. Those who studied in the team are now working in the related companies. The participated professors published average 200 papers for the last three years (average 10 papers per person) and scored more than 500 points in IF.

Lee says “our catalyst technology is expected to be used for convergence of new matter, new high efficiency energy and developing environmental catalyst system. It means that the technology is higher added value and is closely related to commercialization and industrialization.” The team has developed customized team-teaching programs and worked in cooperation with Cheil Industries, Kolon Industries and Kumho Petrochemical. The team also is carrying out technology transfer for SMEs.

Improving education and research environment in Incheon

Lee’s achievements cover from nano chemistry, solid inorganic chemistry, optical catalyst to solar energy photoelectrode. Lee says “education and research is like thread and needle. We can carry out quality research by securing talented students who will create good results and these results can be used for education and research again.” Lee also pointed out about the poor educational environment in Incheon by saying “universities in Incheon are categorized in the capital area universities which means we have to compete with Seoul-based universities. But the budget is far from enough and talented students often move to Seoul. Compared to local universities which have good research infrastructure thanks to government’s balanced development policy, Incheon is bound by the limitation of the capital area.” In order to solve this problem, Lee suggested that Incheon should be regarded as a local and the city also needs to actively create support programs to promote competitive local universities.
