전통지화는 한국의 문화유산 
한국전통문화의 계승과 보전에 힘쓰다

5월은 1년 중 가장 행사가 많은 달로 알려져 있다. 어린이날, 어버이날, 스승의 날, 석가탄신일 등 뜻 깊은 날들이 많지만 곧 돌아오는 석가탄신일은 많은 불자들이 기다리고 전국의 사찰에서 다채로운 행사를 열어 화합의 장을 만들어갈 준비를 하고 있다. 그중 평택에 위치한 송덕사는 주지 석용스님의 전통지화를 바탕으로 불자들과 즐길 수 있는 다양한 행사를 마련하며 분주하게 움직이고 있었다. 월간 파워코리아는 이번 5월호에 부처님 오신 날을 맞아 한국의 불교전통지화를 계승하고 보전해 우리 문화를 세계로 알리고 있는 주지 석용스님을 만나 문화유산의 중요성에 들어보았다. 

전통지화를 지키기 위한 움직임
평택에 위치한 대한불교 천태종 송덕사는 1992년에 지어진 사찰이다. 그곳의 현재 주지를 맡고 있는 석용 스님은 2009년부터 주지 소임을 맡기 시작해 7년째 송덕사에 몸담으며 불자들과 화합하기 위해 끊임없이 정진하고 있는 것으로 유명하다. 특히 주지 석용스님하면 대한민국의 전통지화를 기계화 하지 않고 전통을 유지해가는 인물로 알려져 있다. 우리 민족 일상생활의 일부였던 전통지화는 예부터 궁중 민간혼례 상례 무속신앙에서 사용됐고 불교에서는 영산재, 수륙재, 생전예수재 등 다양한 행사에 지화를 장엄해 왔다. 

석용스님은 인간문화재 범패 전승자였던 故 권수근 스님에게 지화 제작 방법을 사사 받은 천태종 총무원장 춘광 스님과 중요무형문화재 제50호 영산재 장엄분야 이수자인 태고종 장벽응 스님, 그리고 정지광 스님에게 지화 제작법을 배워 현재는 국내에서 전통지화를 가장 잘 표현하고 계승해내는 것으로 많은 이들에게 알려져 있다. 어찌 생각하면 단순히 종이로 만드는 꽃 정도로 생각할 수 있겠지만 지화를 만들려면 재료 준비기간을 합쳐 최소 4개월에서 1년 정도의 시간이 소요된다. 먼저 종이를 염색할 쑥, 치자, 시금치 등 천연재료를 직접 채취하고 그 재료를 찧거나 삶아 추출한 천연염료로 한지를 염색해 그늘에 말린다. 이런 염색과 말리기 작업을 수차례 반복한 다음 90일 이상의 숙성기간을 거쳐야 재료가 완성되고 본격적인 작업을 그 이후에 할 수 있기 때문이다.

“오랜 준비를 거쳐야 지화를 만들 수 있기에 더 많은 것들을 보이고 싶어도 쉽지가 않습니다. 그래서 문화를 원활히 지키기 위해서는 올바른 계승이 필요하다 생각해 현재 한국전통지화연구보존회를 통해 많은 이들에게 보급하기 위해 힘쓰고 있습니다” 현재 유네스코 세계무형문화유산 중요무형문화재와 제50호 영산재 장엄(전통지화) 이수자로 인정받은 주지 석용스님은 더 많은 이들에게 전통 문화를 알리기 위해 사실상 최초로 2008년 서울 관문사 성보박물관에서 ‘마음으로 피운 꽃’이라는 전시를 시작으로 현재까지 6회에 걸쳐 개인전시를 펼치고 있는 작가로의 활동도 하고 있다. 지난해에는 미국에서도 전시를 열어 세계에 전통지화를 알리며 극찬을 받고 오기도 했다.

실제 ‘꽃’보다 더 아름다운 지화 
석용 스님의 지화 작품들은 “실제 ‘꽃’보다 더 아름답다”라고 불려진다. 천연색을 사용해 더욱 선명하며 마치 화가들과 조각가들의 작품처럼 보는 내내 평온하고 따뜻한 느낌을 받을 수 있기 때문이다. 이렇게 아름다운 지화를 알리고 문화를 보존하기 위해 전시를 통해 우수성을 전파하고 있으며 전국의 사찰에서 영산재와 수륙재, 생전예수재 등 큰 행사들을 총 기획해 문화 유산을 알리고 있는 것이 바로 석용스님이다. 이 밖에도 석용스님은 “종단의 일은 물론 송덕사를 위해 힘쓰고 있으며 전통 문화를 지키고 알리기 위해 지화 제작을 수행이라 생각하고 노력하고 있다”고 전했다.

Keeping the traditional Korean flower
Located in Pyeongtaek, Songduk Temple (belongs to the Korean Buddhist Cheontae Order) was built in 1992. Suk has been the chief priest of the temple since 2009. He is most famous as the person who is succeeding the traditional Korean paper flower without automatizing the method. The paper flower was used for royal & private weddings and shamanic faith as well as in the Buddhist ceremonies including Yeongsanjae (Celebration of Buddha's Sermon on Vulture Peak Mountain), Suryukjjae and Sangeonyesujae. 

Suk learned paper flower from the head of the Cheontae Order Chun Gwang, a priest of Taego Order Byeokung Jang who is the 50th important intangible cultural asset in Yeongsanjae, and a priest Jigwang Jeong. Making paper flower might seem simple but it usually takes 4 months to 1 year. You need to collect the materials such as wormwood, gardenia seeds and spinach to extract natural dyes by pounding or boiling them and then dye the paper and dry in the shade. You need to repeat this procedure several times and go through 90 days of aging period to complete the preparation. Only then you can start making the flower.

Suk says "despite this long process to make traditional Korean paper flower, I'm exerting my utmost efforts to spread the culture in cooperation with Korea Traditional Paper Reservation & Research Society." Suk is listed on the UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage and the 50th successor of Yeongsanjae paper flower. He first held his solo exhibition 'Flower Blossomed with Heart' at Seoul Sungbo Museum in 2008 and so far has held 6 solo exhibitions. He also held an exhibition in the US and was praised for his artistic style from the spectators. 

Paper flower, more beautiful than real flower
People say that Suk's paper flower is more beautiful than real flower. Because it used natural dyes, it gives more vivid color alongside artistic value so that the spectators can have a warmer feeling than when they see the real flowers. Suk is spreading the excellence of the traditional Korea paper flower through holding exhibitions and Buddhist events such as Yeongsanjae, Suryukjjae and Sangeonyesujae. Suk added "I don't regard making paper flower as my work but it is my practice of asceticism."
