50년 역사 태화정공의 기술력으로 탄생, 캠핑카 브랜드 ‘TPI모터스’
“인기 비결은 단 2분 만에 다용도 캠핑카가 되는 승합차 개조 기술”

㈜태화정공은 50년 간 건설기계와 자동차 부품업계의 철판가공분야로 유명세를 떨친 회사다. 이 ㈜태화정공이 고유의 제작기술로 장례차, 캠핑카 및 컨버전카 사업 브랜드를 출범시켜 화제다. 새로운 브랜드를 이끌어가는 박기수 사장으로부터 캐빈, 프레임 제작전문회사가 스타렉스를 캠핑카로 개조하게 된 이유, 그리고 컨버전카를 제작하는 노하우로 더 큰 경쟁력을 갖게 된 비결을 들어 본다.

국내 최초의 경제성, 경쟁력을 지닌 스타렉스 캠핑카의 본산지
㈜태화정공은 국내 현대중공업, 두산인프라코어의 1차 협력사로 유명하며, 일본의 구보다 농기계, 영국의 JCB 등 농업용기기와 건설장비 회사에 캐빈을 납품하는 기술력을 보유하고 있다. 주로 캐빈, 굴착기와 프레임을 생산하는 ㈜태화정공은 2000년 6월 KTX 언더프레임 제작업체에 지정되면서 더욱 유명해졌다. 이후 2004년에는 당진공장, 2008년에는 군산공장을 추가 가동하고 있다. 그리고 많은 물량을 소화하기 위해 중국 옌타이와 소주에 제조공장을 건립하였고, 한국능률협회인증원에서 품질경영시스템, 환경경영시스템을 인증을 받았다. 창립자인 박광석 회장은 기아자동차의 1차 창립멤버로서 판금기술력으로 현재까지 기업을 일구어 온 주역이다.

또한 건설 경기가 침체되고 제조업체가 대기업 납품 위주로 흘러가는 상황에서, 중국보다 가격경쟁력이 불리한 상황에서 출혈경쟁으로 살아남기보다는 자체 기술력을 이용해 새로운 승부수를 던지게 된다. 아들 박기수 사장은 “우리의 강점이 바로 판금 기술이기 때문에, 차를 커팅해 리무진형으로 늘리는 장례차를 만들게 됐다. 상조산업의 필수 아이템이 바로 장례차이기 때문이다. 꾸준한 수요가 있었지만, 우리는 레저 산업의 발달과 맞물려 한국 지형에 유리한 캠핑카에 또 다시 도전했다.”

TPI모터스는 회사의 이름이라기보다는, ㈜태화정공의 자동차사업부라는 정체성을 갖고 있다. 특장차사업으로서 소비자들에게 자동차 전문기술로써 더 어필하기 위함이다. 또한 스타렉스를 개조하는 캠핑카를 국내 최초로 시도하는 것이다. 기존의 캠핑카는 철 판금기술보다는 차량 인테리어 기술자들의 영역이 대다수였다. 차량 자체보다는 연결하는 형태, 혹은 수입 차량을 개조하는 방식이라, 가격은 천정부지로 뛰어 연결 박스부분만 1억 원을 호가하는 경우도 많았다. 그러다가 해외에서 수입된 폭스바겐 T5승합차를 개조한 것을 본 박 사장은, 차량의 백 슬라이드를 빼내어 내부공간을 넓힌 차량에서 아이디어를 얻어 1년 간 연구에 들어간다. “처음에는 슬라이드를 밀어내는 장치가 유압식인지 다른 무엇인지도 모르는 상황이었지만, 우리는 개발 과정에서 외관에 용접자국이 하나도 남지 않는 철판 판금기술을 최대한 활용했다. 도색이나 장식보다는, 철을 다루는 기업의 정체성을 보여주기 위한 심플한 기술력의 집결이라고 볼 수 있다” 그리고 가장 임팩트를 줄 수 있는 이름으로, 처음에는 더블백, 폴더힙, 히든힙, 듀플렉스 등 작명을 고려하다가, 차의 성격과 가장 매칭되는 ‘히든백’으로 결정했다고 한다.

킨텍스 박람회에서 폭발적인 반응을 얻은 개조형 캠핑카는 고객의 요구에 따라 고객의 스타렉스를 개조하는 유형, 처음부터 개조 완료되어 출시되는 두 가지 유형이 있다. 4인 가구가 앉거나 누워도 버틸 수 있으며, 캠핑카 사업을 출범한 후 법 규정이 바뀌어 승합차를 캠핑카로 구조 변경하는 것이 가능해진 것도 사업전망의 좋은 징조다. 국내외의 캠핑카 현황을 분석하고 전문 제작자들과 지식을 공유하는 것도 기술력의 세련됨을 보여주는 단면이다. “단 2분이면 리모컨으로 히든백이 확장되어 평소 승합차로 쓰던 차가 개수대, 조리대를 갖춘 캠핑카로 변신한다. 차량 가격은 2,500만원이니, 개조하는 데는 약 1,300만원. 그리고 부가세 포함해도 3,900만 원 대이다. 여기에 특장차 사업 경력은 큰 도움이 됐다. 다른 회사였다면 설비를 갖추느라 가격 맞추기가 힘들었겠지만, 우리는 이미 재단, 프레스, 용접에서 도장, 조립까지 철가공, 정밀가공의 설비와 기술이 다 있다. 국내 특허를 출원하고 4월 개최할 코엑스 전시회를 대비해 차량을 더 만들고 있다.”

무엇보다도 제작에 착수할 때, 1대씩 만드는 것이 아니라 라인생산으로서 하루에도 몇 대씩을 제작할 수 있는 생산관리 전문가들 및 공장이 있어 든든하다. 또한 TPI모터스에서 만든 벤츠 스프린터의 경우, 고급형으로서 차주의 취향에 따라 스마트 TV, 오디오 및 모니터 시스템 옵션이 가능하고, 테이블 레일링과 썬루프 틸팅 기능을 장착하는 럭셔리 밴 개조기술로 국제캠핑페어의 비상한 관심을 끌었다. “브랜드 출범의 궁극적인 목표는 보급이 원활한 작은 캠핑카로, 스타렉스 캠핑카 문화를 정착시켜 국민들이 부담 없는 캠핑을 즐기는 것이다. 지하주차장을 통과하는 높이이니 주차 문제도 없다. 일상과 레저를 공유할 수 있는 차량을 우리 고유 기술로 이루었다” 특수화물군인 장례차에 이어 승합차인 스타렉스 캠핑카를 통해, 독자적인 기술을 다시금 입증한 자동차 전문기술기업으로 거듭나는 ㈜태화정공과 TPI모터스의 힘찬 출발을 응원한다.

The home of Korea's first economic and competitive Starex Camping Car
Taehwa Precision Industry is famous for the first affiliate of Hyundai Heavy Industry and Doosan Infracore and has technology to supply cabins to Kubota (Japanese farm machinery company) and JCB (UK farm and construction equipment company). They mainly produce cabins, excavators and frames and became recognized in 2000 when they were chosen for a KTX underframe manufacturing company. From 2004, they started to run additional factories in Dangjin and Gunsan. They also built factories in Yantai and Soju in China to digest product volumes and obtained Certificate of Quality and Environment Management System from Korea Management Association Quality Assurance.

The founder Gwangsuk Park is also a founding member of Kia Motors who promoted the company with sheet metal technology. He competed by his own technical skills rather than cutthroat competition in the time of economic down turn in the construction field and a weak competitiveness against China. His son Kisoo Park says "sheet metal technology is our strong point and we used it to make limousine style funeral cars. Then we saw the potential in camping cars as the leisure industry was growing fast and there were demands." TPI Motors is not a company name but the car parts department of Taehwa Precision Industry with which they want to promote special vehicles to consumers. Also it was to remodel Starex as camping cars for the first time in Korea. The existing camping cars were usually focused on interior rather than sheet metal technology. It either linked parts of cars or remodeled imported cars and the linked box to a car itself costed more than $100,000.

Then Park saw a remodeled Volkswagen T5 and struck with an idea of making a bigger inner space by pulling out the back slide and researched for a year. Park says "I didn't even know wether the device of the slide was hydraulic or something else at first but we used sheet metal technology which does not leave any welding marks. It was our identity and we rather avoided painting and decoration." And when they came to giving its name, they considered Doubleback, Folderhip, Hiddenhip and Duplex but finally decided to call it as Hidden Back. Remodeled camping cars, which received an explosive response at Kintex Expo, have two types: Reproduceable Starex model and Completed Starex model. 4 family members can sit or lie down and it is advantageous that the law allows to alter a van into a camping car now a days.

They also analyze the present condition of world camping cars with specialists to share related information. Park says "in 2 minutes, a van is turned into a camping car that has a sink and a cooking table. It costs only around $39,000 including tax (car $25,000 and remodeling $13,000). And our special vehicle business experience was a great help for this because we already have everything from cutting, press, welding and painting to assembling, manufacturing and precision processing. We have applied for a patent and are currently producing more cars for the Expo at Coex in April." It is a good advantage that they have their own factories and specialists that can mass produce the cars through line production. Benz Sprinter, made by TPI Motors, can be installed with smart TV, audio and monitor, and it is designed with table railing and sunroof tilting which drew a great attraction at an international camping fair.

Park says "our goal is to release small sized Starex camping cars to secure its popularity and to boost up camping culture. It can easily pass underground parking lot and can be used both daily and when camping."
