Consideration for audience
Cheonan Municipal Dance Company's permanent choreographer Jongduk Kim

The first

I was really glad to meet Kim. After the first contact three months ago I finally set the date and time for an interview with him (he was busy to prepare the 10th anniversary of the dance company). The reason I was glad was that I felt I could understand a little bit about dance through him. I heard that he is sensitive as some people call him like 'little poet' and he also writes habitually and this made me attracted to him.

It became everything of his life
"I really enjoy being alone. I spend the time in thinking, reading or writing. I sometimes go to a movie, concert or exhibition to get some inspiration for my next work. I recently have seen a world's renowned dancer Akram Khan's 'Desh', Kusama Yayoi's Special Exhibition, Jungman Kim's Photo Exhibition, and Greece & Roma Relic Exhibition. I tend to see a variety of things. From photo exhibitions to installation arts, what I see, listen and feel become my intangible asset and the subject of my work." He was versatile by the age of 19 and he wanted to do many things. Some predicted he would be a great artist, some a celebrity, and some a sportsman and he was full of expectations. But he had to accept the fact that life often change the course to the way he never expected. During the time he gave up going to university and lost his way, what wind blew to him he did not know but he started to do dancing in the hope of becoming a stage actor. He could forget his loneliness and pain when he was dancing and it became his life. Thanks to dance, he could be able to do other things he wished to do such as writing and appreciating art works also.

Consideration for audience means evolution
'Artists are to consider for audience thoroughly.' It is one of the Kim's words which I personally like the best. I was wondering whether he has persistence in keeping tradition as a traditional dancer.
"There's a saying that art is the mirror that reflects the time. If the time changes, so does its language. Traditional Korean dance means an art that belongs to the era which applies a little bit different when it come to modern terms. If we are to communicate with modern audience, it means that the performers are bound to develop its form according to the sentiment of the people living in the time." In other words, consideration means evolution. Kim wants to accept only the parts which can communicate with modern audience. It is different from accepting things without any change or consideration.

Spring is nigh and new interpretation of Chunhyangjeon to be introduced
A newly interpreted Chunhyangjeon directed by Kim is scheduled to be performed by Cheonan Municipal Dance Company on 10 April 2015 at Cheonana City Hall. I expect it to be a work which contains full of consideration for audience.
"It might have been possible for Yoonbok Shin to paint an erotic picture like Wolhajeongindo because the time she lived in would also play a role for it. It was the time in which normal people started to express their lives and views and Chunhyangjeon was also written at that time. Pansori (reciting a long story) actually was firmly establish its status in King Sookjong, and developed into an operetta that tells about normal people's joys and sorrows there after. I hope Cheonan Municipal Dance Company's Chunhyangjeon will be an interesting performance which can directly communicate with audience." It seems that Chunhyangjeon this time will be a momentum to set up a new relationship between performers and audience through reinterpretation of traditional dance in modern terms and the love between Mongnyong and Chunhyang will also be executed in various ways.
