‘호반의 도시’ 춘천에서 단월드 센터를 시작하며 이재호 원장이 꿈꾸었던 가장 큰 목표는 바로 지역민을 건강하게 만드는 일이었다. 춘천에 위치한 센터 두 곳을 오가며 진정한 지역사회봉사를 하는 것에 큰 뜻을 품었던 그는 누구보다 춘천이라는 두 글자 앞에 행복이라는 수식어가 추가되기를 간절히 바랐다. 이에 월간 파워코리아는 세 번째 단월드 특별기획으로 춘천지역주민을 위한 알맞은 힐링법을 제시하고 있는 그를 직접 만나 인터뷰해보았다.   

행복한 도시, 춘천을 꿈꾸며
“말씀드린 대로 춘천을 행복한 도시로 만들어 보자라는 것이 가장 큰 밑그림이라고 말씀드릴 수 있습니다. 특히, ‘지역민’을 위한 행복한 도시를 만들기 위해 주어진 선에서, 함께할 수 있는 것들을 최대한 해보자라는 생각을 기점으로 각 기관과의 네트워킹에 초점을 맞추고 있는 요즘이죠.” 기본적인 센터 활동 이외에 이 원장의 두드러진 활동 내역은 단연 ‘콘텐츠’제공이라고 말할 수 있다. 춘천에서 따로 운영되고 있는 청소년인성학교의 프로그램들이 올바른 방향으로 나아갈 수 있도록 교육내용을 양산하거나 춘천에 살고 있는 새터민들이 새로운 환경에 적응할 수 있도록 콘텐츠를 제공하는 것까지 모두 그의 몫이었다.

“국내에 들어오자마자 약 4개월간의 교육을 받고 춘천으로 온 새터민들은 완전히 다른 환경 속에서 심각한 우울증을 겪기 마련입니다. 결과적으로는 어긋난 방법으로 불만을 표출하게 될 위험이 함께 도사리고 있는 것이죠. 그래서 저는 다소 적응에 힘이 부친 새터민들의 안정을 돕는 것이 우선이라는 생각을 하게 되었던 것 같아요. 새터민들의 스트레스 조절 및 안정된 마음을 목표로 만남을 가지는 활동을 거의 넉 달 가까이 진행하면서 그들의 적응을 돕는 활동에 보람을 느끼고 있습니다.” 특별히 지역과 행복을 결부시켜야겠다는 구체적인 목표를 설정했던 것은 아니었다. 그저 주어진 환경 속에서 조금 더 질 좋은 방향으로 지역을 이끌어보자 라고 마음먹었던 것이 계획의 시작이라면 시작이었다.
“제가 지금 활동하고 있는 이 시점에서 점점 더 지역에 도움이 되는 방향 쪽으로 자연스레 마음이 움직였던 것 같습니다. 기본적으로 지향하는 바를 ‘마음의 정화’라고 한다면, 특히 상처받고 힘든 사람들을 본격적으로 치유할 수 있는 춘천을 만들어보자 라는 의지를 갖게 되었던 것이죠.” 
함께 하는 마을공동체임을 기억했으면
춘천은 누구나 예상하듯, 환경자체는 너무나도 부족함이 없을 정도이다. 다만 급격한 현대사회 흐름 속에서 점점 소외감만 증가된 탓에 지역민 자살률에도 적잖은 영향을 미쳤다. 점점 개인화되어 가는 세상살이 속, 지역민의 노령화까지 진행되며 찾아왔던 ‘외로움’이 바로 그 이유였다. 마을단위의 끈끈한 공동체 문화 형성과 교류를 위해 힘쓰고 있는 이 원장에게 특별히 노년층의 마음을 어루어 만질 수 있는 노하우를 물었다.

“본래 사람 마음의 아래쪽에는 기본적으로 양심이 있고 나누고 싶어 하는 마음이 있다고 생각해요. 그동안 잠재워만 왔던 그 마음을 스스로 깨닫고 느끼게 하는 것이 중요하다고 보기에, 근본적인 체험과 교류를 많이 나누게끔 노력하는 편입니다. 그리하여 전체적으로 모두가 행복해지는 것이 개개인도 행복해질 수 있는 방법임을 깨닫게 하는 것, 그것이 저와 센터가 추구하는 목표이죠.”

이재호 원장은 강의가 끝나고 나면 늘 청중을 함께 일으켜 세워, 서로 어깨를 주무를 수 있도록 유도를 한다고 한다. 스트레스를 항상 달고 사는 이들인지라 그들의 어깨는 대부분 딱딱하게 굳어 있다. 그 딱딱한 어깨를 서로 두드려도 주고 풀어주기도 하면서 그들 스스로 개개인이 단절되어 있는 것이 아닌 함께 하는 마을공동체라는 의식까지 함께 주는 것이다.

사랑한다면 ‘악’ 소리 날 때까지 하라는 우스갯소리를 할 정도로 이 원장의 이와 같은 습관은 개인적으로 연마하게 되는 호흡이나 명상에서 오는 에너지와는 또 다른 기분 좋음인 것이다.

강원도로부터 시작하여 
대한민국까지 뻗어나갈 수 있는
“농업기술센터로부터 추진되는 ‘장수마을 프로젝트’가 약 40여 군데 마을을 대상으로 시행될 예정입니다. 장수(長壽)라는 말 자체가 우리나라의 전통언어로서 건강하고 오래 사는 것(아프고 오래 사는 것이 아닌)을 뜻하는 말인 것처럼 저희 센터에서 갖고 있는 노하우 및 콘텐츠들이 요긴하게 사용되었으면 하는 바람이 큽니다. 전국에서 시행되는 프로젝트이지만 강원도 전역을 연결하여 직접 봉사해주시겠다는 든든한 분들도 계시기에, 우리가 지향하고자 하는 바가 잘 스며들어 프로젝트의 핵심 콘텐츠로 자리 잡았으면 좋겠습니다. 그러기 위하여 저 또한 열심히 노력해야 함은 분명하고요.”

이재호 원장은 일명 ‘환한 얼굴프로젝트’를 하여 주변인들에게 행복을 전해주는 사람이 되라고 조언한다. 거울을 통해 비춰진 자신의 모습이 진정한 자신의 모습이라고 말할 수는 없듯이 오히려 나의 가족, 나의 자녀로부터 시작하여 서로의 얼굴에 웃음을 머금을 수 있는 것이 진정한 행복일 것이라고 그는 단언했다. 어쩌면 물 맑고 공기 좋은 춘천에서 그가 진정한 치유를 위해 끊임없이 활동하는 것도 이와 같은 의미이지 않을까? 강원도부터 시작되는 행복 바이러스가 대한민국 전체까지 확산될 수 있는 바로 그 시점을 꿈꾸며 그는 춘천이 ‘호반의 도시’에서 한발 더 나아간 살기 좋은 ‘행복의 도시’가 될 수 있기를 진심으로 바라고 있었다.

Dreaming of a happy city
Lee says "I want to make Chuncheon a happy city. I'm trying to think of what I can do to achieve it and decided to build a good network between the residents and the public organizations." Lee is currently making a variety of contents that might be helpful for the programs of youth personality schools in the city. He is also working on providing appropriate programs for North Korean defectors who are in difficulty to settle down in the region. Lee says "they tried to settle down in the city after receiving a society adjustment education for four months but they are basically suffering from depression and can cause some negative effect in the community if the condition persists. That's why I decided to find some ways to improve their conditions. I meet with them on a regular basis and give a support and share what we have and I feel really worth by doing that." Lee did not actually have any plans for this at first but he wanted to do something to provide a helping hand. Lee says "As the CEO of Brain Meditation Healing Chuncheon Center, I basically pursue my philosophy which is 'purifying my heart'. And this naturally led me to take care of my neighbors and the citizens. I especially wanted to make Chuncheon a happy city through the healing programs we made so that we can help those who are mentally and emotionally hurt." 

Building a community where everybody gather together
Chuncheon has a wonderful natural environment. But loneliness and a sense of alienation in this age of fast paced and aging society has affected some of the residents being depressed. But Lee has been working really hard to give a helping hand to them by trying to build a community where everybody gather together and share their lives. Lee says "I firmly believe that we have conscience and the desire to share something with others deep down at the bottom of our heart. The important thing is how to unleash those beautiful elements. I think we can achieve it through open communication and exchange. And this is what I and the center are trying to create."

Lee always asks his audience to give a shoulder massage to the people around at the end of his lecture. By doing that, Lee thinks, people can feel that we are not designed to live alone but to live together. Meditation and deep breathing can produce positive energy and make us feel good but sharing things with others creates even better energy and happiness. 

From Gangwon Province to the whole nation
Lee says "'Longevity Village Project' of Agricultural Technology Center is scheduled to start in 40 villages. We hope that our know-how and programs will be the core elements that can significantly contribute to the project. Although it is a nationwide project but we expect it also to play a role in linking each village in the province and we will do our best in pursuit of that expectation." 

Lee advises us all to be messengers who deliver happiness to others with a smile. By doing that, he said, we can find a true value of our lives. It might be perfectly suitable for Lee to live in Chuncheon as his activities are closed related to healing others and that healing basically requires a good natural environment. Lee wishes that the happy virus he and the center are creating would spread to the whole nation and Power Korea is convinced that their hard work will make the lake city into the most happy city.
