마사지 전문 인력을 양성하는 국내 최고의 권위자

성인이라면 누구나 한번쯤은 전문적인 샵이나 병원 등에서 마사지를 받아본 적이 있을 것이다. 단순한 손길이 아닌 마사지는 다양한 연구를 통해 많은 방법들이 존재하지만 공통적인 부분은 바로 단순한 손길이 아닌 마음을 전달하는 새로운 방법이라는 것이다. 머리부터 발끝까지 몇 번의 손길을 거치면 금세 심신에 쌓인 고통과 피로가 사라지는 마법의 손길로써 심신을 치료하는 힐링의 또 다른 시도이기도 하다. 이렇듯 피로에 쌓인 현대인들에게 어쩌면 마사지는 꼭 필요한 요소가 될 것이다. 월간 파워코리아는 이번 4월호에 스웨디시, 딥티슈 등 국외의 마사지 기법은 물론 국내 마사지 분야를 이끌어온 터칭이모션연구소 남태열 원장을 만나 그들의 이야기를 들어보았다.   

국내 마사지 분야를 선도하다
인하대학교 체육교육과를 나와 체육선생을 하던 남태열 원장은 본격적으로 재활에 대한 연구를 위해 1992년 돌연 호주로 유학을 떠났다. 호주에서 호주공인 재활치료사와 아로마테라피스트, 스웨디시 딥티슈 마사지를 마스터한 남 원장은 전세계 spa 1세대로, 1994년 브리즈번 다이아나 호텔 다이아나 클럽스파에 입사해 PT와 재활마사지, 스파마사지를 교육했고 스포츠 재활클리닉 병원에서는 럭비선수와 많은 운동선수들을 관리했다. 이후 한국으로 돌아오며 최초로 관인 스파 매니저 양성과 각종 스파 관련 마사지를 가르치는 교육을 7년 동안 담당했다. “사실 당시는 마사지하면 음지에 있는 부분들을 많이 생각하며 좋지 못한 시선이 많았습니다. 저는 이런 부분을 바꾸고 싶었죠. 외국에서는 마사지에 대한 연구와 학문이 굉장히 많고 유명한 전문가들도 많았기 때문에 국내도 이런 문화를 만들고 싶었습니다. 그렇게 역삼동에서 학원을 시작하게 되었죠.” 이렇게 시작된 아카데미는 스파에 관련된 부분들과 전문적인 마사지에 대한 교육을 진행하며 국내 스파&마사지 분야를 움직이는 원동력이 되었고 그 후 국내에 전국적으로 고급호텔은 물론 스킨샵과 바디샵이 늘어나면서 붐이 일어나게 되었다. 사실 대부분 샵의 매니저들은 남태열 원장의 교육을 받은 전문가들일 정도로 남태열 원장만의 교육과 지식이 국내 마사지분야에 뿌리박혀 있다는 말이기도 했다. 이런 유명세는 2002년 MBC와 EBS 등 방송에서 소개되며 조명을 받기도 했다. 남 원장이 국내 처음으로 도입한 스웨디시 마사지는 세계 3대 마사지중 하나로써 고객의 몸과 마음을 행복하게 해주는 가장 기초적인 마사지이고 고객의 취향에 따라 강한 마사지와 부드러운 마사지로 두루 사용할 수 있는 유연성이 뛰어난 마사지이다. 기본적으로 7가지의 동작을 사용하는 웰빙 개념의 마사지이고 선진국에서는 고급마사지의 대명사로 알려져 있다. 
현재 터칭이모션연구소에서는 아로마테라피 정규교육과 스웨디시 마사지, 딥티슈 마사지, 재활스트래칭(정형마사지)의 전문적인 교육을 진행하며 샵을 계획하고 운영하는 이들에게 정확한 방법들을 알려주고 있다. 이 밖에도 스파나 마사지 전문샵들의 창업에 대한 컨설팅도 진행 중에 있다.          

고객에 맞춘 마사지가 기본이 돼야 인식이 변할 것 
사실 남 원장에게 투자할테니 샵을 크게 내자는 제의도 상당히 많았다. 하지만 남 원장이 추구하는 것은 단순한 이윤 목적이 아닌 직업을 갖지 못한 사람들에게 기초 교육을 시켜 그로인해 직업을 갖게 하는 것이다. 그리고 세라피스트를 우습게 보는 인식을 바꾸고 정말 전문적이고 고급스러운 문화를 만들기 위함에서이다. 남 원장은 “사실 미용실을 가도 고객이 원하는 것들을 말하면 이용사들은 그대로 잘라주는 것이 대부분입니다. 모든 분야가 마찬가지이지만 마사지 분야는 고객에 맞춘 마사지가 아닌 것이죠. 분명 마사지를 받는 이들은 기분에 따라 다른 마사지를 받고 싶다고 생각합니다. 그래서 마사지도 기본적으로 고객에 맞춘 전문적인 방법들로 이뤄져야 전체적인 인식이 바뀔 것”이라고 전했다. 현재 공적으로는 중부 여성발전센터에서 마사지와 근육학을 대중화시키는데 역점을 두고 있고, 개인적으로는 발전센터와 협력하여 일인 창업을 위한 마사지 교육과 재활관리를 교육하고 있다. 또한 궁극적으로는 사회적인 기업을 염두고 있다고 남 원장은 전했다.  

다양한 저서를 발간하며 국내 스파와 마사지 분야를 움직여온 남태열 원장. 손기술과 이론기술을 접목시켜 보다 완벽한 시스템을 대중화시키고자하는 그의 열정과 철학을 보며 국제적으로 인정받을 날이 머지않았음을 느껴본다.

Leading the massage industry in Korea
Nam majored in Physical Training and worked as a teacher and left for Australia with his passion to study on rehabilitation in earnest in 1992. Nam mastered several official courses including rehabilitation therapist, aroma therapist and Swedish Deep Tissue Massage in Australia and started to give PT, rehabilitation massage and spa massage training in Diana Club Spa at Diana Plaza Hotel from 1994 and managed numerous athletes at Sports Rehabilitation Clinic. He then worked on fostering spa managers and spa massage training for 7 years when he came back to Korea. Nam says "over all social recognition about massage was negative when I first started and I wanted to change this because there were many related specialists and organizations being active in overseas countries but Korea was relatively slow to accept the field. So I opened a center in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam." The center provided special knowledge and training about spa and it became the driving force of the domestic spa & massage industries which eventually created a sensation in proliferation of luxury hotel, skin shop and body care center. It is known that most managers of those shops and centers were trained by Nam which proves Nam's significant influence in the industry in Korea. This fame led him to appear on MBC and EBS in 2002. Nam first introduced Swedish Massage, which is one of the world's three massages, to Korea and it is a basic massage that can relax both body and mind and it provides both strong and smooth massage depending on clients' preference. It uses 7 movements of the body and it is known as a well being and luxury massage in foreign countries. Currently, Touching Emotion Center is providing professional training such as 'formal education', 'Swedish Massage', 'Deep Tissue Massage' and 'Rehabilitation Stretch' and is teaching the shop owners how to properly manage their business. The center is also providing consultation in opening a spa and massage business. 

Providing customized massage to change people's recognition
Many people lured Nam to expand the business with their huge investment plan but making profits was not a sole purpose which Nam wished to achieve. He thought it was more important to train jobless people so that they can have proper job, and to change people's negative recognition about therapist so that he can eventually create professional and luxury spa and massage culture in Korea. Nam added "when you go to a hair shop you can get your hair cut or styled the way you like because that's what hair specialists do. But in fact, massage is not the field to provide service the way customers want. The problem is that they still want to be treated individually and therefore, it is important to give customized service so that over all social recognition about massage can be improved." Meanwhile, Nam is currently focusing on popularization of massage and myology at Central Women's Development Center alongside providing training on massage and rehabilitation management for start-ups. But his ultimate goal at the end is to build a social enterprise. Nam has published numerous books about spa and massage and is working hard to spread a perfect system in which hand technique is ideally combined with theory. Power Korea supports Nam and the center.
