부산디자인, 세계 중심에 서다

친환경 캐릭터 디자인문구로 한류 바람을 일으키고 있는 작지만 탄탄한 기업이 있어 화제가 되고 있다. 실용적인 디자인을 지향하고 친환경 인쇄기법으로 환경을 생각하는 ‘착한 디자인’의 새로운 패러다임을 만들어가는 (주)디자인부산의 서무성 대표이사가 그 주인공이다. 20여 년간 부산경남지역을 대표하는 두뇌역량우수전문기업(2014 산업자원통상부), 부산시 디자인 선도기업(2009), 우수디자인전문회사(2011~2012년)로 인정받아 온 (주)디자인부산. 이제 부산, 더 나아가 ‘코리아 디자인 브랜드(Korea Design Brand)’의 저력을 알리기 위해 세계를 향한 도전장을 내밀었다.

변화하고 도전하다
(주)디자인부산은 일찍이 사보, 브로슈어 등 각종 홍보물 및 단행본 출판에서 기업 및 기관의 CI 디자인, 그리고 웹사이트 제작에 이르기까지 감각 있는 디자인과 내실 있는 기획으로 고객의 마음을 사로잡아왔다. 기획부터 디자인, 인쇄 및 공정까지 이르는 자체 원스톱 시스템(ONE STOP SYSTEM)을 보유한 점이 탁월한 강점으로 손꼽힌다. 

특히, 각 분야 전문팀(디자인팀, 기획팀, 일러스트팀, 포토팀, 웹사업팀, 산업디자인팀, R&D팀, 관리팀, 인쇄·제작팀, 후가공팀)의 체계화된 분업화를 통해, 사업수행 전반의 모든 과정을 철저하게 관리함으로써 더욱 정확하고 신속한 결과물을 얻어내고 있다. 지난 2013년에는 부산 최초로 ‘고모리 리스론 G40 H-UV’와 ‘스코딕스 디지털 엠보싱 인쇄기 S75’를 도입하며 더욱 안정화된 인쇄시스템을 구축했다. 주목할 점은 단순히 기기를 도입하는데 그치지 않고, 일여 년간의 테스트를 통해 모든 인쇄공정을 ISO국제표준에 완벽하게 맞춤한 것이다. 이처럼 (주)디자인부산은 JDF 기반의 인쇄공정 자동화 도입, 작업 안정성 증대를 통해 인쇄 품질을 최상의 상태로 유지하고 있다. 

새로운 도전, 디자인아이비 개발(www.designivy.com)
성장은 언제나 도전이라는 추진력과 인내를 수반한다. 1996년 편집디자인회사로 시작, 20년간 꾸준히 성장해온 (주)디자인부산 서무성 대표이사의 도전도 쉬지 않았다. 그리고 마침내 2010년에는 디자인문구 개발이라는 획기적인 아이템을 꺼내들었다. 

(주)디자인부산은 멸종위기동물인 사막여우를 모티브로 한 보니(BONEE)와 모눈(MONOON) 캐릭터를 개발, 디자인문구에 ‘친환경’ 콘셉트를 접목하면서 부산을 넘어 세계를 향한 발판을 다져갔다. 이로 인해 Design IVY의 대표 캐릭터인 보니와 모눈은 ‘2012 우수디자인(Good Design)’ 시각디자인 부문에 선정되었으며, 최우수상에 해당하는 ‘조달청장상’도 함께 수상하는 쾌거를 달성했다. 이후 (주)디자인부산은 지난 2011년 4월 홍콩 선물용품 박람회를 시작으로 두바이 국제추계종합박람회, 독일 프랑크푸르트 페이퍼월드, 중국 하얼빈 경제무역상담회 등에 참가하면서 외국시장개척에 본격적으로 문을 두드렸다. 

‘메이드 인 코리아’의 제품에 대한 높은 신뢰도와 컬러풀한 색감을 자랑하는 디자인문구가 중국 내 현지인들 및 바이어들에게 좋은 반응을 이끌어내면서 론칭 2년 만에 1만 5,000달러(한화 약 1,800만 원)로 첫 수출에 성공했으며, 대만에도 3,300달러에 수출계약을 맺는 등 성공적인 행보를 이어가고 있다.

부산을 디자인하다
“2010년 부산시의 관광 콘텐츠 구축사업을 수주해 홈페이지, 각종 홍보물과 가이드북을 제작하게 되었습니다. 이를 계기로 부산 문화관광 콘텐츠 발전에 대해 고민하게 되었고, 부산을 대표하는 관광 콘텐츠를 디자인문구에 접목해야겠다고 생각했습니다.”
이후 부산을 대표하는 관광지와 축제 등의 관광콘텐츠를 활용, 각 지역 스토리가 담겨있는 디자인문구를 개발하기 시작했다. 부산의 시어인 고등어를 캐릭터화한 ‘꼬등어 시리즈’, 등대를 활용한 이색 다이어리 등 100여 가지가 넘는 아이템들이 그것이다. 

특이한 것은 부산을 방문하는 관광객들을 대상으로 개발된 제품이 오히려 해외에서 먼저 반응을 보였다는 점이다. 약 2만 달러에 중국 상해로 수출되면서 (주)디자인부산의 제품이 부산을 홍보하는 역할까지 하게 된 것이다. 대만에서는 보니&모눈 캐릭터를 활용한 핸드폰케이스 라이센스 계약을 체결하며 콘텐츠 수출 또한 청신호가 켜졌다. 

현재 디자인아이비의 다양한 캐릭터 문구제품은 핫트랙스, 오랜지바다숍 등 국내 온오프라인 매장은 물론, 세계 곳곳에서 판매된다. 후쿠오카 디자인 편집숍인 D12, 상하이·항저우 백화점 내 ‘Shanghai hans’ 매장에 입점하는 등 일본, 중국, 대만, 호주 등지에서도 만나 볼 수 있다. (주)디자인부산은 장애인 표준화사업장을 실천하며, 장애인 고용, 나눔과 공생을 실천하는 ‘착한 디자인기업’이기도 하다. 그들은 내일을 꿈꾸는 열정과 놀라운 창조의 힘을 통해 ‘착한 디자인’의 무한한 가능성을 보여주고 있다. “대한민국을 넘어 세상을 디자인하고 싶다”는 서무성 대표이사의 바람처럼, 부산디자인의 저력이 세계를 움직일 수 있도록 그의 행보에 주목해본다.

Change and challenge!
Design Busan is a sought-after design firm in the city with their speciality in designing and producing house journal, brochure, PR materials, CI design and website. Their one-stop system conveniently covers from design to printing. The specialists in the firm are working in various departments in design, illustration, planning, photography, web business, R&D, management, printing & production, and post process to make perfect results through speedy process. The firm introduced cutting edge printing equipments 'Lithron G40 H-UV' and 'Scodix Digital Embossing Printer S75' for the first time in Busan in 2013. In order to meet the requirements of ISO International Standard, printing specialists carried out various experiments and tests for a year. In addition, their JDF-based auto-printing process automatized work flow, improved safety, reduced the processing times of recording and archiving, and maintains the quality of the products at its best. Growth always requires challenge. With their driving force and consistency, Design Busan has been challenging impossible tasks for the last 20 years. Starting as an editing specialized design firm in 1996, they pioneered a variety of fields including CI, BI, web design, industrial design and printing and has now become a total design firm. Inspired by an endangered animal 'desert fox', they developed innovative characters 'BONEE' and 'MONOON' in 2010 which added a feeling of eco-friendly concept to catch-lines. As the presentative characters of Design IVY, BONEE and MONOON won '2012 Good Design Award' in the visual design sector, hosted by The Ministry of Knowledge Economy and sponsored by KDPI, and they also won the top prize from Public Procurement Service. This success encouraged the firm to enter overseas market and they started to participate in various international expos from April 2011 including Hong Kong Gifts and Premium Fair, Dubai International Autumn Fair, Paperworld Frankfurt and Harbin International Economic and Trade Fair. Their sophisticated catch-line and design drew a great deal of attention from the local residents and buyers and they achieved an export profit of $15,000 for the first time since they opened the firm and also signed an export contract worth $3,300 as a result.

Designing Busan
Seo says "we carried out the Tourism Contents Project of Busan in the design part and created various web sites, guide books and PR materials. This project gave us some ideas to make unique catch-lines that can combine regional tourism contents." Seo introduced creative items that can represent the stories and characteristics of each district (16 in total) in Busan. Among the 100 items, 'Mackerel Series', which is a symbolic fish of the city, and 'Fancy Diary', designed with lighthouse, drew the most attention. Interestingly, the items were first recognized from overseas which resulted in exporting $20,000 worth products to Shanghai and it actually spread the name of the city in China. Not only this but they signed an agreement with a Taiwanese company to use BONEE and MONOON on smart phone cases. Currently, the various characters of Design IVY is being sold offline stores such as Hottracks and Orange Bodyshop and online in pursuit of global distribution. You can also find Design IVY in offline stores in Hukuoka (D12), Shanghai (Shanghai hans in Hangzhou Department Store), Taiwan and Australia. As a representative design firm in Busan, they produced souvenirs of Busan International Film Festival twice in a row (2013/2014) and carried out renewal project of Danubi Circular Train in Taejongdae. Their innovation and creativity were eventually recognized by winning the titles 'Excellent Creative Enterprise' from The Minstry of Trade, Industry & Energy in 2014, 'Leading Design Enterprise Busan' in 2009 and 'Excellent Design Enterprise Korea' in 2011 and 2012 as the first enterprise of Busan. Design Busan also is functioning as a social enterprise serving particularly for disabled. Power Korea hopes that Design Busan will one day be a global design company.
