소외된 이웃을 보듬는 따뜻한 손길

봉사는 타인을 기쁘게도 하고, 타인에게 유익이 되기도 한다. 그러나 이것은 참된 마음에서 우러나는 봉사에 한해서다. 사세 부득하여 하는 억지의 봉사, 이욕을 위한 봉사, 남에게 보이기 위한 위선의 봉사, 즉 참되지 않은 이름의 봉사는 오히려 그 반대의 결과를 가져오기 마련이다. 하지만 모두가 그런 것은 아니다. 내가 가진 것은 조금 나눠가지고 어려운 이웃을 보면 그냥 지나치니 못하는 천성적으로 타고난 봉사가들도 있다. 낙동강의 마지막이자 바다의 시작. 1300리의 낙동강의 긴 여정을 마치고 더 큰 세상과 만나는 을숙도가 있는 곳, 바로 부산시 사하구이다. 여기서 이영수 회장은 자신보다 어려운 이웃을 위해 수 십년 동안 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다.

봉사는 마음의 근육을 키우는 최고의 사치
이런 봉사가들의 공통점이 있다면 그건 ‘오른손이 하는 일을 왼손이 모르게 하라’는 명언을 좌우명처럼 여기며 조용히 실천하고 있다는 것이다. 이영수 회장도 마찬가지였다. 인터뷰하자는 요청에 한사코 자신은 내놓을 만한 일을 한 것이 없다는 것이 거절의 이유였다. 한참을 설득한 끝에 그가 지역에서 한 많은 활동들을 들을 수 있었다. 그가 소속된 단체는 사하구보훈단체연합회 고문, 사하구하단1동주민장학회 이사장, 사하구체육이사회 고문, 사하구청년연합회 직전회장 등 관내 봉사를 하는 모임과 더불어 지역 경제 발전에 일임을 하고 있다. 수 십년 동안 사하구에 거주하면서 서부산권의 발전을 위해 활발한 활동을 전개해 오고 있는 그는 사하구 16개 동 자치위원장 등을 역임하기도 했다. 이 회장은 사하구 발전을 위해 다양한 일을 했지만 그중에서도 을숙도대교 명칭을 확정짓는데 가장 큰 역할을 했다. 당시, 을숙도대교의 명칭이 명지대교로 가승인이 나자 부산시 관계자와 지역대학 교수 등을 일일이 만나며 을숙도 대교로 명칭이 바뀌어야 되는 타당성에 대해 설득한 결과 지금의 을숙도 대교로 명칭을 바꿀 수 있었다고 한다.  

“을숙도는 낙동강과 남해가 들고 나는 낙동강 끝자락에 자리한 하중도(河中島)로 1978년 행정구역 개편에 따라 사하구 하단동에 걸쳐 있기 때문에 명지대교가 아닌 을숙도 대교로 명칭이 바뀌는 게 마땅합니다.” 또한 한국전쟁 참전용사와 국가유공자들을 꾸준히 후원하는 사하구보훈단체연합회 고문으로도 그 역할을 톡톡히 하고 있다.  

“봉사는 특별한 의무가 주어진 사람만이 하는 남다른 활동이라는 기존의 사고를 버려야 합니다. 주위를 둘러보면 우리의 손길이 필요한 곳이 너무나도 많습니다. 나보다 어려운 이웃을 위해 자그마한 도움을 주고자 하는 마음만 있으면 누구나 할 수 있는 것이 바로 봉사활동입니다.” 

하단장학회 설립을 통해 아이들에게 꿈과 희망을 전파
지역의 어려운 이웃을 돕기 위해 많은 활동을 하던 그는 이 나라의 미래를 짊어질 아이들이 경제적인 이유 때문에 제대로 공부를 하지 못하는 것을 알고 지난 2010년 2월에 하단장학회를 설립했다. 지역에 우수한 인재를 육성하여 지역사회 발전에 기여 할 수 있도록 하기 위하여 사하구 하단1동에 거주하는 어려운 가정의 자녀들에 대한 장학사업과 불우이웃돕기를 전개하고 있다. 이로 인해 관내 많은 사람들이 하단장학회를 위해 후원 해 주고 있는  결과 현재 1억 여원의 장학금이 확보되었다. “하단장학회를 최대한 빠른 시일 내에 재단법인으로 만드는 것이 목표입니다. 재단법인을 만들기 위해서는 출자금이 3억원이 필요하기 때문에 지역의 많은 분들께 지속적인 관심을 부탁 드립니다.”

그는 자신의 훈훈한 마음을 결코 ‘봉사’라는 단어와 결부시키지 않고 우리 사회에서 마땅히 해야 할 일이라고 생각하며 살아가고 있었다. 지금과 같이 각박한 세상살이 가운데 ‘내 것’만을 챙기기 급급한 가운데 오히려 내가 가진 한 조각의 빵조차 어려운 이웃들에게 조금씩 나누어 주는 미덕의 주인공. 

알버트 슈바이처(Albert Schweitzer)박사는 검은 대륙 아프리카 밀림에서 흑인들에게 의술을 베푸는 동안 행복을 찾았고, 교육중의 스승인 페스탈로치(Johann H. Pestalozzi)는 가난한 아이들의 스승으로써 행복의 열매를 맺었다. 인간에게 주어진 행복이란 돈과 명예에 있는 것이 아니고 희망과 기대 속에서, 이웃을 위해 봉사하는 과정에서 그들이 기뻐하고 보람을 느끼는 과정에서 진정한 행복을 찾게 되지 않을까 생각된다. 남을 돕는 것은 눈에 보이는 ‘물질의 여유’보다는 어려운 이웃들을 진정으로 위하고 생각해주는 ‘마음의 여유’가 있을 때 비로소 그 가치는 두 배, 세 배로 커지기 마련이다.   

“인생이란 자기하기 나름입니다. 무엇에 가치를 두고 만족을 느끼느냐에 따라 우리들의 삶은 행복할 수도 불행할 수도 있지요. 앞으로 많은 사람들과 더불어 지역발전을 위해 더욱 노력하며 내가 가진 것을 베풀어 줄 수 있도록 할 것입니다”는 이영수 회장의 바람대로 사하구가 부산에서 제일 가는 명품도시로 우뚝 설 수 있도록 기대해본다.

1957년 서면 광우체육관에서 레슬링 사범으로 활동하면서 수많은 인재를 양성하였고 부산항운노조에 31년 동안 노조 부위원장을 역임했으며 부산공동어시장 초대 노조위원장을 역임하기도 했다. 2013년부터 사하구생활체육회 회장을 맡고 있으며 2014년도는 16개 구,군 연합회 회장직도 맡고 있다. 사하구 장림동에 위치한 미진산업의 대표이사로 재직하며 생활폐기물처리, 사업장 생활폐기물 처리 등을 처리하는 사업을 하고 있다.  

Busan Special: Mijin Industry CEO Youngsoo Lee
Serving others is the maximum of luxury 
'Don't let your right hand know how your left hand is helping others' is the expression that can perfectly suit those who serve others. Lee is not an exception. Lee refused to have an interview with Power Korea because he regards himself having nothing to show off. After a considerable time of persuasion, Power Korea could be able to hear many of his virtuous deeds. He is contributing to the development of regional economy by taking various roles such as the Advisor of Saha District Veterans Groups Federation, the Chief Director of Saha District Hadan 1 dong Residents' Scholarship Committee, the Advisor of Saha District Athletic Club, and the former Chairman of Saha District Youth Federation. He also is serving as the Chairman of 16 local community committees of Saha District and significantly contributed to deciding the name of Eulsukdo Bridge. The name supposed to be Meyonggi Bridge but Lee actively persuaded the related officials of its validity to be called as Eulsukdo Bridge. Lee says "the bridge is located at the edge of Nakdong River bordering Hadan-dong, Saha District and therefore it must be called as Eulsukdo Bridge." When asked about his voluntary service, Lee says "volunteer activities are not only for someone who are special but everybody can do as long as they have a willingness. Many people around us are in need of our help and you can start with small things." 

Spreading dream and hope to children through Hadan Scholarship Committee
Lee founded Hadan Scholarship Committee in February 2010 in order to support children from low-income families. His goal is to foster those children to grow into talented people who will contribute to the development of regional economy. With ardent support from people, Lee has secured $100,000 scholarship so far. Lee says "my goal is to make Hadan Scholarship Committee to be an incorporated foundation. In order to do that, we need $300,000 so I ask the residents a continuous support and participation." We learned that he never links his activities with the word 'voluntary service' but regards it as a valuable work which we all have to do. In this age where most people value their own interests and benefits, Lee takes the initiative and sets an example in sharing even a piece of his bread with his neighbors. Dr. Albert Schweitzer found a true happiness while he was curing people in the African jungles and a Swiss pedagogue and educational reformer Johann H. Pestalozzi found it when he was teaching children. Happiness in our lives are not in money and fame but in the process of helping our neighbors in difficulty so that they can find hope and carry on their lives. The true value of our lives become double and triple when we have a warm heart to consider others first rather than to accumulate our own gains. Lee says "how we live depends on ourselves. Our lives can be happy or unhappy based on what kind of thing we cherish and pursue. I will never change myself from the way I always have been and I will keep fighting for it." Power Korea hopes that Saha District in Busan will be a role model for other districts in the city.

Lee fostered many talented people while he was working as a wrestling instructor at Gwangwoo Gymnasium in Seomyeon, Busan in 1957, served as the deputy union head of Busan Port Transportation Union for 31 years and served as the first union head of Busan Cooperative Fish Market. He has been serving as the Chairman of Saha District Sport of All Club since 2013 and the Chairman of 16 local community committees of Saha District since 2014. He currently is the CEO of Mijin Industry that is specialized in household and industrial waste disposal.
