‘EDISON,’ a simulation as power to change the future
 - constructing the hub system for advanced science education in the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD)

The core keyword for the time of creative economy is ‘convergence.’ Korea’s science and technology already knocking on the door of the world has combined with our unique IT technology to create new synergy effects. Among them, ‘EDISON,’ a project for developing the advanced science education hub supervised by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, has been drawing much attention from learned circles with its excellent results and daring innovation so far.

Software innovation project known in the world
In November 2013, Advanced Science Education Hub Development project (called EDISON), which is supported by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and executed by KISTI (Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information), won ‘HPC Innovation Excellence Award’ at 2013 International Super-computing Conference held in Denver of the US, and EDISON is the first to receive the award in Korea. EDISON project driven forward since 2011 is intended for students, researchers in science and technology, smaller enterprises, etc. to use simulation software in education and research, instead of expensive commercial software, based on the HPC (high performance computing) environment in KISTI. And its excellent and innovative results of the development of the EDISON platform based on HPC technology and utilization of that in education accounted for winning the prize.

Foreign-made commercial software used by domestic universities and industrial companies so far took such a high cost as running to annual 80 billion won for maintenance alone, acting as an obstacle to simulation-based education and research activity. Thus, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning launched EDISON Central Center in 2011 and has directed its energies toward developing the platform and software capable of teaching and learning the basic and applied principles of science and engineering through simulation. EDISON Central Center is now operating five Professional Centers – computational fluid dynamics (CFD), nano-physics, computational chemistry, structural dynamics and computational design - for driving area-specified projects in each field.

Construct the platform of simulation for computational fluid engineering 
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a science and engineering discipline based on the mass, momentum and energy conservation laws for describing fluid flow phenomena. CFD, with powerful computing platform, calculates these conservative equations numerically to analyze and design fluid flow phenomena. EDISON_CFD Professional Center is devoted to building an integrated computational environment for education and research that provides simulation programs and contents available on the Internet in the field of fluid engineering. Prof. Chongam Kim (Seoul National University), the leader of the Center, explained, “Currently, in-depth researches are carried on various issues of CFD in learned circles. And achievements of these researches have been diversely applied in academic and industrial fields for analysis, design and manufacture of products in a fluid engineering point of view.”

The utilization of EDISON_CFD is improving adaption of undergraduate students to the related technologies in fluid engineering, cultivating the students into qualified researchers to increase the national competiveness in science and technology for the future, and on a long-term basis, making endeavors to replace the foreign-made commercial software with domestic ones. To that end, the Center has carried on developing subject-oriented simulation programs (80 kinds in all) and educational contents (84 kinds in all), and working on using them for various undergraduate courses in the area of fluid dynamics.

The Center is composed of 6 sub-topics to cover the almost all areas related to fluid engineering. Besides, in cooperation with the Central Center, the CFD Center gathers feedbacks and statistics regularly on utilization of simulation programs, and reflects them on the next-year development plan to improve the function of the programs and user interface of the platform, and to expand the community of EDISON_CFD.

Contribute to reduction of expenses for importing foreign-made commercial software
The Center is aiming to shift the existing theory-oriented education into the simulation-based one by providing the web-based simulation environment. In order to strengthen the capabilities of the next-generation researchers, it is also focusing on nurturing high quality simulation resources in fluid engineering using EDISON_CFD system. Prof. Chongam Kim clarified, “Domestic simulation program developed in the Center is expected to reduce the cost necessary for maintaining foreign-made commercial software currently used. We also expect that following the technological transfer commercialization of EDISON_CFD system, it will create the market for education enterprises. And EDISON_CFD contributes to strengthening technology competitiveness of industrial companies through retraining of human resources in the industrial fields.”

Currently, EDISON project has finished its 1st stage for developing the platform and framework, and is preparing the 2nd-stage project to secure the basis for commercialization and the EDISON_CFD community. EDISON_CFD system has been utilized by 14 universities and 1105 students in 24 classes around the country for the second semester of 2014 alone.

Constructing the platform for education and research is an important project basing the development of the nation’s technology. It is expected that EDISON project will rear excellent professionals, contribute to R&D activities of associated research institutes and industrial companies, and have many wonderful fruits as a visible result to show off to the world.
