‘Naeildrim,’ the world’s first electronic charge account system developed using barcode

Many people would have a faint memory of buying things on credit and then pay out for them at once when they have extra money. Buying on tick, our country’s unique transaction culture hardly seen anywhere in the world, has been a sort of community love and romance initiated when most people in the country were poor. This culture still remains in the form of account book settlement centering on enterprises or government offices but its dependence on handwriting has often led to a disgraceful civil suit. In this context, in an attempt to both keep the virtue of credit transactions and correct problems, a domestic enterprise developed the first-ever electronic charge account system drawing an unusual attention. We met Go Dae-sic, president of KSANP (www.ksanp.com), to hear about advanced credit transaction system.

KSANP, a subsidiary of KSNET which has developed and supplied software in addition to pos equipment, was founded in August 2012 and is expanding the area of franchise-based business. Starting with Seoul and Suwon offices, it broke the record of 1,000 companies in service contract, and after launching KOPOS 3.0 in 2013 and establishing Asan office, the company surmounted 7,000 companies in service contract. Especially last year, it put out ‘Naeildrim’ and ‘Item bill service’ diversifying the company’s area of business. “I myself also was on my night work settling my account based on a handwritten book but it was really bothersome. I thought it was ridiculous in a country called a IT powerhouse to prepare a book in handwriting. Since our company is a venture for retail payment operation, I felt sure that we could service an advanced electronic charge account.” 

The electronic charge account launched by KSANP in the name of ‘Naeildream’ provides the service of conveniently using the charge account, which used to be only prepared by handwriting so far in nearby restaurants, through the personnel’s cell-phone barcode authentication. As the existing charge account has become electronic, it serves an enterprise so nicely because it can prevent the abuse and misuse of credit transactions and report transparent sales by checking who has eaten what and where. It can also reduce related personnel expenses because the one in charge of general affairs can make his duty much simpler with one click. It is also good for the restaurant owner because he can leave an exact data about a credit bill and increase its collection. “When we searched for data to find marketability, we learned that there were a considerable number of suit cases between enterprise and member caused by payment based on handwriting. Two years ago, a restaurant owner who transacted with a provincial office went under unable to collect bills because of losing the book. We expect that spread of ‘Naeildrim’ will obviate such problems.” Among others, it is likely to accelerate the spread of the electronic charge account service because of easy management on charge accounts through the credit card terminal which has been used for settlement, without need for another management system.

’Naeildream’ is now being in service at 250 shops through 30 enterprises while KSANP is moving on to the primary goal of 2,000 shops in the future. “With continuing introduction of enterprises and members even without promotion, it is naturally building its own infrastructure. Since it is going viral by the ones who have actually used this system, I am sure this service will be settled down within another 5 years.”  

Though there have appeared competitors which provide a similar service through fingerprint recognition, KSANP is still considered to have a high marketability for such small commission in price as just a quarter. To the members, president Go is currently delivering one-month free service. He added that the company will add extra functions of discount or reserving for members through partnership with restaurants and coffee shops in the future.      

He also said, “We are planning to launch our second version for the pre-payment for an enterprise’s sum of charged table expenses in order to prevent shop owner’s lack of funds by collecting payments at each end of months and help them increase sales. It will raise our competitiveness with more convenience and differentiation.” KSANP, which started as a competitive venture for retail payment operation and drawing joint growth between enterprise, small business and shop owner, will be a good model for our bright future of creative economy.
