국내 데이터 마이닝과 기계학습 분야의 권위자
인하대학교 컴퓨터정보공학과 조태호 교수

대한민국도 이제 서서히 세계적인 학자들이 나오며 국내를 넘어 해외에서의 활동은 물론, 그에 따른 관심이 점차적으로 증가되고 있는 시기이고 이는 모든 분야에서 현재 진행 중인 사실이다. 최근에는 영국 케임브리지 국제인명센터(IBC), 미국 인명정보기관(ABI), 마르퀴즈 후즈 후 인 더 월드 등 세계 3대 인명사전에 등재되는 학자들이 탄생되며 세계적인 위상을 떨치고 있는 것이 바로 이것들을 증명하고 있는 상태이다. 얼마 전 2월에 마르퀴즈 후즈 후 인 더 월드에 등재되며 주목받고 있는 인하대학교 컴퓨터정보공학과 조태호 교수는 국내 데이터 마이닝과 기계학습 분야에서 독보적인 위치와 함께 세계적으로 위상을 떨치며 주목받고 있었다. 월간 파워코리아는 그의 연구와 함께 앞으로의 이야기를 들어보았다.

Marquis Who‘s Who in the World 등재로 세계적 관심 받아
조태호 교수가 몸담고 있는 인하대학교 컴퓨터공학부는 기초학문을 바탕으로 실용적인 능력을 배양하며, 기술적 변화에 지속적으로 대응할 수 있는 전문인을 양성하며 국내에서 독보적인 위치를 차지하고 있는 학과이다. 이곳에서 현재 7년 동안 강의 위주의 교육을 진행하고 있으며 조태호 교수의 강의는 국제화 시대에 발맞추어 학부 대학원 전공과목을 영어로 진행하고 있다. 그렇기에 주로 외국인 학생들이 수업에 많이 참여하고 국내 학생들도 세계적인 언어인 영어의 습득은 물론 전반적인 강의를 통해 양질의 교육을 받고 있기로 알려져 있다. 사실 조태호 교수가 세계적으로 인정받고 있는 부분이 20여년 가까이 연구해온 데이터 마이닝과 기계학습에 대한 연구 때문이다. 그의 연구는 기초이론과 응용을 연결시키는   것으로써 1997년 산업체에서 시작해 박사과정, 그리고 현재까지 연구하며 독보적인 위치를 다잡고 있는 권위자로 인정받고 있다. 데이터 마이닝은 어떠한 방법(순차 패턴, 유사성 등)에 의해 관심 있는 지식을 찾아내는 과정으로서 대용량의 데이터 속에서 원하는 정보를 발견하고 연광성을 파악, 가치 있는 정보를 만들어 손쉽게 정리하는 것이라 생각할 수 있다. 이는 기업이 보유하고 있는 일일 거래 데이터나 고객 데이터, 상품 데이터, 혹은 마케팅 데이터 등 모든 분야에서 응용시킬 수 있다. “현재 저의 연구는 기초이론과 응용부문을 동시에 해나가고 있습니다. 전산분야의 기계학습, 소프트 컴퓨팅 및 데이터 마이닝 분야에 대한 부분을 동시에 연구하고 이를 접목해 가고 있죠.” 이렇게 혼자서 모든 부분을 해결하고 있는 조태호 교수의 놀라운 점은 바로 국제학술지와 학술대회에 100편 이상의 논문을 발표했다는 것이고 100편의 논문 중 90편 이상이 단독저자 혹은 제1저자로 되어있기에 더욱 주목받고 있었다. 또한 모든 논문이 영어로 되어 있어 국제적으로 관심을 받고 있었고 이런 부분들이 취합 되어 세계 3대 인명사전 중 하나인 Marquis Who‘s Who in the World에 등재되는 쾌거를 이룬 것이라 생각된다. 

끝까지 연구하는 진정한 학자, 조태호 교수
조태호 교수는 무슨 일이든 기초부터 다져야 한다고 강조한다. 모래 위에 성을 쌓지 말라는 뜻으로 기초부터 차근차근해서 결과를 만들어야 롱런할 수 있다는 것이다. 또한 교육자로서 학생들에게 규칙적인 라이프 시스템을 구축 하에 학업에 임해야 미래에 큰 그림을 그릴 수 있다고 전했다. 평생을 연구하는 학자로 남고 싶다고 말하는 조태호 교수는 현재 계획을 Paper(논문), Patent(특허), Publication(책발간), and Program(연구) 등 4P에 중점을 두고 있다. 
향후 빅데이터를 처리하는 기술 개발과 함께 그간 연구들의 결실을 맺고 싶다고 말하는 조태호 교수의 연구는 앞으로가 더욱 기대된다.

Prof. Jo gets spot-lights as a promising researcher on data-mining and machine learning fields in Korea. He recently has been awarded in one of the global top three biographical dictionaries and Korea's top bilingual magazine Power Korea has met Jo and heard about his story.

Awarding oneself in Marquis Who‘s Who in the World
Computer Information Engineering Department at Inha University holds a unique position in Korea by fostering specialists who can cope with ever changing technology through basic and practical studies. Jo has been teaching at the department for 7 years and all his lectures are given in English in accordance with current globalization era. And this is a reason that many foreign students are attending his classes alongside Korean students who wish to receive qualitative lectures. Jo is globally famous for his 20 year research on data-mining and machine learning. His theory is to connect grounded theories to its application starting from when he was in the industry in 1997 to being an authority in the field through PhD and continuous R&D. Data-mining is the process of analyzing data from different perspectives and summarizing it into useful information. It enables companies to analyze many fields such as daily transaction data, customer data, product data or marketing data. Jo says "I'm currently carrying out grounded theory and its application area at the same time. I'm trying to combine machine learning, soft computing and data-mining in the computational field." Jo has published more than 100 research papers in international academic journals and symposiums and more than 90 papers are solely done by Jo himself. All papers were written in English and Jo was awarded in one of the world's three biographical dictionaries 'Marquis Who‘s Who in the World'. 

A true scholar who never stop his research
Jo emphasizes on the imporance of basics for building everything. It means to build a castle not on the sand but on the rock. He advises students to build a regular life system before taking their studies so that they can paint a bigger picture. Jo is currently focusing on 4P which are Paper, Patent, Publication and Program as he wishes to be remembered as a life time researcher.
