Energy independent system that can change the paradigm of future energy
Potential of fuel cell-solar energy hybrid system
Heekwon Jeon, the head of research institute and director of S-Fuelcell

Fuel cell, the spearhead of dispersion power system and the creator of the market
Natural state resource is not permanent. Oil deposits are limited and nuclear power generation is also not safe as it was proved in Fukushima. The world is now turning their eyes on water, wind, geothermal and solar powers for alternatives. The development of new energy responds sensitively to change of weather and location and is limited for commercialization due to a rather small scale of market. There also is a need to build Microgrid (dispersion power system) around the capital areas where large power plants and transmission network are difficult to be installed. Meanwhile, fuel cell, which is free from those difficulties, is rising as a good alternative and S-Fuelcell, which drew a great attraction even before its establishment, obtains various technologies to run 1kW or 5kW high efficient fuel cell system such as core parts, system plan and control. This enabled them to provide 60kW fuel cell (LPF and LNG for its fuel) to the new office building of North Gyeongsang Province. S-Energy (CEO Sungmin Hong), which declared to turn into a smart energy solution enterprise, established S-Fuelcell (CEO Kiok Moon) in cooperation with a high molecular electrolyte team last year. The latter currently is being invested by S-Energy as an affiliate. Jeon says "we plan to create a paradigm of new energy through combining solar energy and fuel cell which is closely linked with 'fusion new energy project' initiated last year." Their goal is to commercialize independent fuel cell-solar energy hybrid system through the process of receiving energy from solar energy module - saving hydrogen (HESS) - running fuel cell by hydrogen. The concept of Microgrid system is much needed for fuel cell field and is expected as next generation energy source that does not produce harmful substances.

Marketability of fuel cell-solar energy hybrid system
Jeon says "battery ESS (BESS) is easy to apply electric storage efficiency but has limited lifespan with high cost of expanding its capacity. Hydrogen, on the other hand, keeps in the high pressure state and only need to extend size of tank. Also, hydrogen ESS (BESS) has competitiveness as its technology has been much improved compared to 20 years ago." Fuel cell-solar energy system combined with hydrogen ESS is free from change of weather and decreasing power production and it can also be used for hot water or heating by using the heat source produced when oxygen responds to hydrogen. It especially can be used as 'eco friendly energy independent system' in the mountain areas or islands both home and abroad including East Asia (a lot of islands), China and India (many deserts). For this marketability, S-Fuelcell has submitted the government the 'Independent Fuelcell-Solar Energy Hybrid Development System' as subject of national policy and is chosen as such at the moment. Unlike the negative prediction when it was first developed, Jeon is expecting that it will be commercialized by 2020 thanks to its rapid development of technology.

Blue print to enter overseas market
As the development unit price of new energy is higher than fossil fuel, government support and private sector's effort is much needed. The US introduced 'independent development incentive system' and Europe made a system to sell leftover electric power through electric power matching which is creating private market. Korea has 'compulsory new and recycled energy supplying system' which public organizations sized more than 1,000§³ have to follow, and 'new and recycled energy supplying support project' which the government supports a part of business expenses but it is over all still in its infancy. Therefore, there is a need for government to make policies to attack foreign markets as they are bigger than domestic market at the moment. Jeon says "the government need to make a building fuel cell market to reduce its unit price and to provide incentives to independent power generation building to secure economic feasibility. In preparation of the market being bigger, S-Fuelcell is currently developing 10 to 20kW scale system and carrying out a research on durability, system module, low unit price and mass production." Jeon also mentioned that he will enter overseas market to lead energy independence in the island areas after a verification test of fuel cell-solar energy hybrid system.
