Park holds summit talk with Sabah, the ruler of Kuwait
President Park held a summit talk with H.H.Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the ruler of Kuwait, on 2 last month at Bayan Palace. It was Park's first summit talk with Kuwait after Korea's former president visited the country in March 2007. Park said that both countries have been strengthening friendly cooperation since tying the diplomatic relations in 1979 and it is now developing into partnership through not only economic cooperation but also political, culture, regional and global cooperations. Park added that Kuwait's 'Kuwait Vision 2035' and Korea's '3 Year Economic Innovation Project' are similar at the point of promoting new growth engine and higher value industries through creativity and innovation and therefore there are many potential to cooperate between the countries. She suggested to cooperate in ICT, railway, transport, health & medicine and service alongside energy and construction. Sabah in response said that they are ready to solidify cooperation, pleased with Korean company's participation in Jaber Bridge and Mubarak Harbor, and wishing the summit to be an momentum for boosting up cooperation between the governments, national assemblies and entrepreneurs. 

[Energy] Park said that we need to create higher value by combining existing energy sector with ICT and she expects that we can increase economic feasibility in oil hunt, development and produce through co-technical research from both countries' petroleum corporations. She also hoped that cooperation in smart grid field that can optimize energy efficiency would keep continuing in friendly terms. 

[Construction & Plant] Park said that Korean companies have contributed for the development of Kuwait by participating numerous construction and plant projects for 40 years and asked Sabah a support for Korean companies to keep contributing to building infrastructure such as New Refinery Project (NPR) in Kuwait. 

[Higher Value Business (health, ICT, defence)] Park expects cooperation in health & medicine on the occasion of MOU between health authorities and suggested also to cooperate in ICT, specialist training support project, and defence industry. Sabah said that Koreans are famous for excellently completing the projects they took and he expects Korean companies' active participation in over all projects in Kuwait. He also emphasized that it is more important to implement the agreements and suggested appointing responsible persons. 

[Consul] Both Park and Sabah sympathized the importance of manpower exchange and welcomed measures for visa fee exemption and improving the procedures of entering and staying in both countries. Park also asked 'mutual acceptance of driving licence' to be rapidly agreed and Sabah said he will do what he can for this. After the talk, both ministers of foreign affairs signed an agreement of visa exemption for diplomats. Park and Sabah also discussed on global issues and building peace in the Middle East and the Korean Peninsular. They agreed to cooperate in UN and other global organizations and exchanged opinions of cooperations relating to humanitarian assistance and world water forum. Sabah asked Korea's participation and support in The Third international Humanitarian Pledging Conference for Syria which will be held in Kuwait in March. Park praised Kuwait's support for Syria and Korea will participate and support and Sabah in response promised to participate in world water forum in Korea. 

[Peace & Security in the Middle East and the Korean Peninsular] Park explained about Korean government's effort for peaceful unification of Korea and denuclearization of North Korea and asked a support as Kuwait is the only country where North Korean Embassy operates in the Gulf region and as Kuwait has a good cooperative relationships with North Korea. Sabah sympathized the importance of solving nuclear problems and peaceful unification of Korea and he said that he will actively support for it. 

The summit talk is well received as it strengthened cooperation in construction and plant and also expanded cooperation to various fields including medicine, ICT, defence, consul. As the result of the summit, a MOU for cooperation in transport which will enable Korean companies to participate in building railway and metro, and a MOU for cooperation in health & medicine which will enable exchanges of doctors and patients and building and running hospitals in Kuwait. 
Park participates in The 96th Anniversary of March 1 Independence Movement Ceremony
Park participated in The 96th Anniversary of March 1 Independence Movement Ceremony held at Sejong Center and suggested Korea's future direction. She started her commemorative speech with "in the meaningful year of the 70th anniversary of independence, I would like to show my sincere respect and gratitude for those who fought for our independence." Park said that the spirit of March 1 Independence Movement was a foundation for us to achieve democracy and economic prosperity within a half century. She added that like our ancestors passed the spirit and foundation to us, it is our duty to deliver it to our future generation to come. Park continued that Korea at the moment is standing at a crossroads of either leaping forward or staying where we are and it is obvious that we have to choose the former and we have to create new value through economic activation and to secure competitiveness and growth potential through reformation of bad practices. Park also mentioned that economic innovation and structural reform are a difficult task to achieve but we nevertheless have to do our best to achieve it by national level cooperation for our future.
