A cradle of rearing smart professionals for the global age

Topics of the recent job market are humanistic acquirements, de-specifications and practical job capability. It means the market needs talents who have an understanding of business and flexibility enough to cope with any change of situations. Gumi Information High located at Gumi city, Gyungbuk, was established in 1969 and selected for the most excellent school at Industrial Education Festival of Gyungbuk in 2009. It is a distinguished school being operated for the project of enhancing job skills since 2011 with many achieved results, including its ranking first at an overall assessment for supporting educational welfare investment. The Power Korea Monthly, a Korean-English magazine representing the country, interviewed the principal Kim Won-gyu of Gumi Information High, which is developing the students’ character and creativity and building competitiveness with diverse systems of education.

Over 40 years of history since its start as Indong Commercial High in 1969, Gumi Information High made a name change in 2008 as it is, receiving authorization for reorganization of subjects. It is full 15 years with the current educational system through relocation with a new construction in 2000. The school has 520 students with a total 18 classes, 6 classes by grade, operating financial information and global distribution departments. Of 180 graduates for 2015, over 50% got hired by small but strong enterprises with a high growth potential, with some for the government investment institutions by open recruitment and most for white collar jobs related to their major. 

Principal Kim Won-gyu, who took office in September 2013, has established moral values, substantiated commercial information education and operated a creative curriculum while making an active educational environment for rearing talents of SMART (Smile, Manner, Ability, Right mind, Technician) to open the global age. It is principal Kim’s aim to make the school environment capable of getting jobs suited for each student’s aptitude and building their expertise. 

“Many people say the current young generation has no dreams of their own, but the older generation and the whole society should also bear the responsibility. It is true that the economy or the size of welfare is important, but we should present the direction for our youngsters to work and find a way out for them by continued social research.” 

Gumi Information High operates ‘Five certifications system’ - basic occupational ability for elementary knowledge, skill qualifications for the state-authorized technique, one music/fine arts/physical education for one person for emotional stability and physical strength, reading/discussion for skills of thoughts and expression, and exemplary life for practicing love and sharing. Besides, operating 32 optional lectures, including certificate of qualifications, for after-school class, the school is constantly solidifying the students’ job capability.

The curriculum of Gumi Information High puts focus on making ‘a practical talent’ not just for theory. For this, it is essential to strengthen the teacher’s capabilities as well as well equipment of student guidance program. Regarding this, principal Kim said, “I gave training assignment several times to teachers for vacation of ‘job analysis through acquaintances working for a company in relation to our school’s majors.’ Only when the teachers grasp the reality which can be different and unavailable through textbooks, such as change in the trend of business, actual content of duties, change in salaries, etc., can they provide more realistic advice for students. 

The most characteristic of Gumi Information High’s job program is ‘global job program.’ Of the students who wanted to move to a broader world, the school selected 20 in February 2014 and started English and in-depth job training. Finally,  six successful candidates through competition went out to Singapore last September. Except for one who is under the working age, these students are currently working as manager for a duty-free shop in the airport and global distributers including department store. This year, with an aim for 15 students’ employment overseas, 30 students are participating in a special program. 

In addition, the school is checking on capabilities needed for employment through diverse job camps and outside special lectures from companies, while consistently carrying out programs of job ability buildup that can be cultured through training. In last September, the school presented a roadmap for finding jobs to the whole body of students by inviting graduates from Gumi Information High with occupational subdivision into tax affairs and accounting for a large, small but strong, and public enterprises. In October, conducting an intramural job camp for 2nd graders, the school contributed to enhancing the capability for image making, writing an application and interviews. 

‘Students should be allowed to build a professional career for their own ability.” 
Principal Kim is planning to construct a systematic database on the graduates’ path and course of getting a job, how long and how much they have built up in what occupation, why they quit a job, etc. over a period of five years. Principal Kim expects such process will build an index and guide on the question of ‘what kind of person enterprises want.’ 

He accentuated once again, “Social atmosphere requiring a collage gradate should be altered and there must be an enterprise environment in which students can build a professional career equal to their ability. I wish the government’s policies should support such things more than the present environment and circumstances. I think it is the essence of education to enable students to enjoy and get along with such natural elements as the subject of their own lives.” 

Instead of seeking for a short-term result, Gumi Information High has been in place as a true educational institution for training the youth who aim at getting a job rather than entering upon studies, through a systematic effort of organizing and managing the curricular system. It is highly expected that the Gumi Information High will advance to the world rising above Gyungbuk region and Korea.
