A cradle of creative talents to lead along smart IT
To develop industrial capability with active international cooperation
Kyungwoon University LINC Corps

With a prolonged economic slump, numerous enterprises and colleges are in the midst of making efforts to find a way out. Especially, LINC (Leaders in Industry-University Cooperation) project has been constantly reaping high results of performance since the beginning. It is a joint effort to seek win-win development between local university and industries by rearing professionals meeting the demands of local industries and developing technologies.

Smart IT technology to create high added values
Smart IT, which is widely used for diverse industrial fields, is in the limelight as an important future technology since it can create a high added value. Through LINC project supported by the Ministry of Education, Gyungwoon University is making the best endeavor to develop its locally connected industries of electronics and IT into ‘Smart IT industry (Smart security, Smart medical equipment and Smart service (MICE)). Smart IT is the technology that adds more added value to the existing IT one, and Kyungwoon University, based on IT technology, tries convergence with other fields focusing on the spread of new value-added industries for the community. Especially, based on 1,405 family companies in business, the university is developing over 15 leading companies annually.

For this year, based on the successful results so far, Kyungwoon Univ. is giving more impetus to the spread of technology to other areas in Daegu/Gyungbuk district and advance to the global market. The university was selected as one of the 45 universities for implementing second-phase project.
Kyungwoon Univ. lays special emphasis on ‘becoming the cradle of rearing creative talents to lead along the future.’ To that end, while strengthening educational support to inspire creativity and a convergent mindset into students, it is holding events and contests in supplementing every institution to implant a creative culture in the school. By opening diverse convergence lectures for interdisciplinary efforts and applying it to capstone design lecture, the school is lifting the ‘perfectibility of education’ so that the students’ project output may reflect the demands of the market environment and be creative.

The university’s project for rearing creative talents is leading to substantial results of performance. Among students participating in capstone design, over 15 teams annually are taking out patents or applications for design while the trend of joining startup clubs is increasing 100% each year. Helped by this, among this year’s startup clubs, three have completed registration for entrepreneur and Sonist, one of them, signed an MOU with Varazo Inc, e4TechHub Inc and KOLIS, which are enterprises specializing in marketing media in Silicon Valley.

A global advance base for boosting creative economy
Kyungwoon University is transforming the whole campus into ‘a base for supporting creative economy.’ The university has constantly constructed all facilities for industry-academy boosting park, making itself a space to share with workers and enterprises in industrial complex nearby with even industrial support and mental healing for them.

Gumi Industrial Complex Campus which opened in May last year is helping enterprise use departments in close relationship with them (Mobile engineering, computer engineering) and equipment (specific absorption rate: SAR) among its university facilities. Equipment transferred was made more specialized for higher efficiency from enterprise demands, while for some functions, scope of support is being enlarged to levels sufficient to issue certificates for standards at home and abroad. Lee Chae-soo, President of the Corps, said, “To spread the results of industry-academy cooperation, we have been forming a building under our ownership located near Daegu Third Industrial Complex into the Creative Convergence Center since the beginning of this year. We will have an opening ceremony soon.” This Creative Convergence Center, in partnership with Daegu Digital Industry Promotion, is giving an unsparing support in developing relevant technologies to enterprises in need for startup incubation in the field of smart industry.

Such endeavor of the Project Corps reveals itself in the fruition in the global achievements. Last October, Kyungwoon Univ. signed an MOU for enhancing global competitiveness of students with the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade and its affiliated industrial university. Currently, to Yenpoong Industrial Complex in Vietnam, Samsung Electronics and its partner companies for mobile field which existed in Gumi are going in numbers with an increasing number of the local students who want to join Korean enterprises. This MOU for reducing the gap between talents needed by an enterprise and local manpower and cultivating excellent professionals is expected to make a great contribution to the development of Vietnamese market and launch of Korean products on the local market. By installing K-Pro Shop on the site, Kyungwoon Univ. is introducing products from family firms locally, providing an opportunity to find a market in Vietnam. Corps President Lee Chae-soo showed a strong will toward the spread of global results saying, “Suiting the image of Gumi, an export-oriented city, we will make a success case for expanded global market of enterprises by global industry-academy cooperation in partnership with Vietnamese government and universities.

Kyungwoon University LINC Corps is devoting itself to the qualitative improvement of the project for remaining years. In a short-term view, they are aiming to make all members of the university participate in LINC project and expand the area of industry-academy cooperation, and in a long-term view, they are seeking to build capabilities of this cooperation by constructing a global network with China, Japan, Canada, UK, etc. Their efforts are expected to bear the fruit of smart IT technology of Korea spreading to the world.
