통합 청주시 테니스의 붐을 이끌다

청주 테니스발전을 위한 토대 다지기
기대수명 100세 시대를 맞이한 오늘날. 건강한 삶을 영위하고 삶의 질을 높이기 위한 생활체육은 현대인들에게 필수적인 것이 되었다. 특히 대표적인 생활체육의 하나인 테니스를 더욱 보급·발전시키고자 청주시테니스연합회는 꾸준하고 열성적인 활동으로 청주의 테니스 발전과 체육문화 발전에 크게 기여하고 있다.

현재 100여개 클럽과 8,000여 명의 회원을 운영하고 있는 청주시테니스연합회는 동호인을 중심으로 국민들의 체력향상을 위해 다각도의 활동을 펼치고 있다. 최근 연합회에서는 연변조선족 자치지구와 자매결연을 맺고 정기적인 교류 행사를 개최하고 있으며, 연변의 엘리트 학생들과 동호인들을 위해 테니스 교육도 펼치는 등 국제적으로 활동영역을 넓히고 있다. 이에 더해 문화적 탐방도 진행하고 있으며, 엘리트 꿈나무 육성기금을 조성해 매년 초·중·고 학생들에게 장학금을 지급하고 있다.

충북지역의 꿈나무 육성기금 조성은 전체적인 학교 체육 발전으로 이어지며 가시적인 성과도 낳았다. 지난해 전국체전에서 40여년 만에 처음으로 준우승을 달성한 것이다. 어린 테니스 꿈나무들이 세계적인 선수로 성장할 수 있도록 전폭적으로 지원하고자 하는 연합회는 각 지역 테니스장 조성과 시립구장 구성에 최대한의 노력을 펼치고 있다.

하나 된 힘으로 어려움을 극복하다
청주시테니스연합회를 이끌고 있는 조봉현 연합회장은 ‘통합 청주시’ 출범 이후 테니스 동호인들이 줄어들고 있다는 점이 우려된다고 밝혔다. 이런 문제를 해결하기 위해 연합회에서는 각 아파트 동호인과 테니스 꿈나무를 발굴해 좀 더 많은 사람들이 테니스장으로 돌아올 수 있도록 노력하고 있다. 또한 매년 진행하는 테니스 꿈나무 장학금을 더욱 강화하고 확충하기 위해 다양한 수익사업을 창출하려는 계획도 가지고 있다고 밝혔다. 테니스 발전과 함께 지역사회를 위한 봉사활동에 주력하고 있는 연합회는 임원들 60여명이 직접 테니스 발전을 위한 봉사활동을 수행하고 있어 더욱 주목받고 있다. 

조봉현 연합회장은 “청주는 인구 83만의 도시입니다. 하지만 아직까지도 시립테니스구장을 갖추지 못한 점을 아쉽게 생각합니다. 제가 가진 역할은 청주시에 시립테니스구장을 유치하고, 장기적인 청주 테니스 발전을 위해 혼신의 힘을 다하는 것이라고 생각합니다”라고 밝혔다. 그는 또한 시 통합이후 단일화된 체육협회 구성에 어려움이 많았으나, 성공적인  통합회 결성과 운영이 이루어지고 있다는 점에서 많은 회원들의 노력이 큰 도움이 되었다고 말했다.

회장 활동과 함께 서도건설의 대표이사를 역임하고 있는 조봉현 연합회장은 일반적인 건설업과 더불어 전통사찰, 고건축, 탑, 성곽과 같은 충북 지역의 문화재 보수업에도 역량을 쏟고 있다. 새로운 것도 좋지만 우리가 가진 고유의 문화유산을 지켜야만 긍지와 발전이 있으리라는 생각에서다. 그는 “저희들은 전 직원이 혼연일체가 되어 100년, 200년 뒤의 후손들에게 물려줄 수 있는 찬란한 우리의 문화유산을 지키기 위해 노력하고 있습니다. 항상 주변을 돌아보고 다른 이를 생각하는 자세에서 오히려 저희들이 많은 배움을 얻고 있습니다”라고 말했다. 

테니스에 대한 관심, 동호회로 이끌 터
조봉현 회장의 목표는 청주시에 시립테니스장을 건립하는 것이다. 2012년 처음 회장직을 맡은 이후 줄곧 청주시와 청주시장과의 면담을 통해 시립테니스장 건립의 필요성을 역설하고 있다는 그는 향후의 발전을 위해 물적인프라 조성은 반드시 이뤄져야 하는 부분이라고 강조했다. 특히 최근 TV프로그램을 통해 인기가 급상승하고 있는 테니스의 붐을 청주시에 불러일으키기 위해서는 폭넓은 지원이 동반되어야 한다는 점도 지적했다. 인기에 힘입어 최근 아파트 단지, 학교 단체, 공공기관 등 테니스 강습 문의를 많이 받고 있다는 조봉현   연합회장은 이번 2015년 여름을 준비하며 무료 테니스 강의를 개설하기 위해 준비단계를 거치고 있다. 

올해 통합회장에 취임하며 더 큰 책임감을 느끼고 있다는 조봉현 회장. 시립구장 건립과 함께 청주시 테니스인의 확충, 동호인 증대에 최선을 다하고자 하는 그는 전국 최초로 연합회에서 시행하는 초·중·고 연맹전을 시행하는 것이 꿈이라고 밝혔다.

지역체육계의 발전과 테니스 문화의 보급, 활성화를 위해 노력하고 있는 청주시 테니스연합회. 통합 청주시와 함께, 수많은 테니스 동호인들의 하나 된 의지가 더 큰 성과로 나타나게 되기를 기대한다.

Creating the foundation for the development of Cheongju tennis
Life expectancy is now 100. Sports for All has become a must to promote healthy and quality life. Cheongju City Tennis Association is contributing largely to the development of the city's tennis and sports culture. They are currently running 100 clubs and has 8,000 members. They recently set up a sisterhood relationship with Korean Chinese Community and are holding exchange events regularly and giving tennis training to the elite students and to those who are interested.

They are also carrying out cultural tour and providing scholarships to primary, middle and high school students through Elite Dream Tree Promotion Fund. North Chungcheong Province Dream Tree Fund also led to the development of school sports and they achieved runner-up prize for the first time in 40 years at the National Sports Festival last year. The association wants to support children tennis players by building tennis courts so that they can grow to be global players. 

Overcoming difficulty with one mind
Jo is concerning on the fact that the number of club members are decreasing. To solve this problem, the association is trying to find tennis players around apartment complex. They will also strengthen Dream Tree Scholarship and plan to create various profit-making business. 60 members are carrying out volunteer activities for the development of the tennis industry. Jo said "Cheongju's population is 830,000. But we still don't have City Tennis Court. My job is to invite City Tennis Court and to do my best to promote tennis in the city.

We had difficulty to form an integrated sports association but we are successfully running the association now thanks to the help from the members." Jo also is the CEO of Seodo Construction and is contributing to improving cultural assets in the city such as traditional temples, old buildings, pagodas and fortresses. New things are good but we can have pride and development when we cherish our cultural assets. Jo said "all our staff are doing our best to keep our cultural assets so that we can pass them down to our next generation after 100 or 200 years. We learn many things by taking care of our surroundings."

 
Attracting people's interest for tennis through club activities
Jo's goal is to build City Tennis Court in Cheongju City. Since he took the chairman's role 2012, he has been asking to build the related infrastructure to the city and the mayor. He also pointed out that the broad supports are needed to promote tennis as its popularity is rising at the moment thanks to the TV programs. Jo said that he is receiving many inquiries about tennis class from apartment complex, school organizations and public offices and he is preparing free tennis class for this summer. Jo said that he feels big responsibility as the chairman of the association.

He revealed his ambition of holding primary, middle and high school leagues for the first time in Korea alongside building City Tennis Court and expanding tennis players in the region. Power Korea hopes Jo and the association will achieve their dream.
