Feature Story: The age of wellbeing to open for Korea 2014

Presents a role model for coexistence in small octopus franchise business

Cited from Gyeonggi-do governor for ¡®development of the community¡¯

Lee Seung-woo, president of Ageujip Small Octopus

How about having a pungent scent of small octopus at Ageujip?

There are so many restaurants and so many difficulties in choosing the menu for office workers that a joke explains this situation: ¡°The biggest topic for workers are to choose their menu at a lunch break.¡± Facing such difficulty, trying a famous gourmet restaurant can be one way. Can there be a phrase ¡°It is worth the name.¡± without reason? A famous place usually renders service and cooking worthy of the name to customers. Besides, if some place enjoys a brief spike in popularity, time will tell jades from stones. Power Korea Monthly met President Lee Seung-woo of Ageujip Small Octopus, which is very famous as a small octopus restaurant, to introduce his admiration for small octopus.

¡°Where are we supposed to eat lunch today? Ageujip is the answer.¡±

¡°Small octopus is called Jjooggaemi in Jeonnam-do and Jjoogemi in Gyeongnam-do. Its body is like a common octopus with eight arms but smaller in size and tastes a little bit different from squid or octopus. Especially, the pungent taste of small octopus blows away all the stress piled up in you.¡±

Small octopus richly containing unsaturated fatty acid, such as DHA, lowers the blood cholesterol levels. This can prevents every kind of vascular diseases, such as hypertension, apoplexy, high cholesterol and arteriosclerosis, in advance. Besides, DHA component is widely known to have positive effect on brain development. Especially, it has an excellent effect of preventing dementia for the elderly. Containing rich taurine, this dish is also popular as a typical stamina food for those who feel fatigue habitually.

Head shop of Ageujip Small Octopus is located on the opposite side of Manseok Park in Suwon city, Gyeonggi-do. It is almost impossible to find a vacant seat here because the restaurant is so crowded with customers all the year round. So famous is the small octopus of Ageujip for the pungent taste of Chungyang red pepper and tasty sauce as well as for its peculiarly own chewy texture. Currently, there are about eighty chain stores open around the country standing in the center of novel issues in franchise industry as a success model making a new epoch of 0% close.

Will make a Korean food to attract the palate of the Chinese

¡°Currently, there are Chinese tourists increasing at an alarming rate. The main purpose of their sightseeing is shopping and eating food of the country. Since about 2 years ago, Chinese people have shown much interest in small octopus, too. According to the opinions of foreign or Chinese people who have frequented the shop, the Chinese say they like the pungent and fatty taste of small octopus from their propensity.¡±

Reviewers say that small octopus suits the liking of Chinese people who are fond of fatty taste. He said that there are parts to be careful because of the rarity in domestic small octopus company¡¯s advancing to the Chinese market, but that he would set a role model as a leading player. Currently, Ageujip Small Octopus is preparing to open a company-operated shop in Qingdao and Shanghai, China. He clarified his ambition to put emphasis on the business in China as the biggest one in the future.

Contribution to the community through giving back

Currently, many head offices of franchise directly supply foodstuffs to each of members at a profit. However, Ageujip Small Octopus is different. ¡°Small octopus and spiny lobster are coming from Vietnam, which we don¡¯t supply through the head office. Our members and head office make purchase together in the form of joint purchase. There is no profit earned from the head office, which members know well on their part.¡±

President Lee¡¯s management philosophy is coexistence. Besides, President Lee is donating part of the profit for scholarship on the level of corporate responsibility. He is currently heading the committee of scholarship and steering for Seongil High and Gwangnam Elementary School, respectively, as well as Mok-dong FC and Mok-dong Ardent Lovers. He regretted for having to select beneficiaries among junior students of his alma mater. Despite the importance of schoolwork, he is also emphasizing character education based on physical strength to the growing children in the soccer club he is backing up. It is not a large amount of return to the community but he wants to return a considerable part of company profits to the community in his sympathy for the needy coming from his own experience. Besides, he is strengthening his aspect as ECO by participating in the course of Gyeonggi Carnegie continuing education center.

¡®Second takeoff with the community¡±

Cited from Gyeonggi-do governor for ¡®development of the community¡¯

He said that in the beginning, there was a parking war in front of the shop because of visitors. He admitted that many cars had made the community inhabitants uncomfortable. For this reason, President Lee Seung-woo purchased a house at the back of the shop using it for a parking lot. At the time of lunch and supper, he is having the customer¡¯s cars parked while providing the place for community residents in the late evening as a free parking lot, drawing a big response from inhabitants. He explained that in the future he would expand the parking lot by constructing a four-or-five-storied new building above to accommodate customers. He also said he hoped other shops of business type prosper to revitalize the commercial power of the community. With such service and good deeds for years, President Lee received a commendation from Gyeonggi-do governor in April 2014 for his merit of ¡®contributing to the community development.¡¯ President Lee says, ¡°I wish that my staff should save money and become an independent business person owning his shop. I hope all of them will become my partner and family-like shop owner, not just a subordinate relationship between employer and employee.¡± What can the taste of small octopus be when he is also serving the community with true love? Now the hot summer sun is passing away and the autumn is around the corner. How about having the flavor of autumn in the scent of small octopus at Ageujip Small Octopus?
