¡®GMP' boasts global competitiveness in ship, nonferrous metals and piping fields.

With technical skills and trust, they maintain cooperative relationship with global piping enterprises.

Youngki Ok, the CEO of GMP Co. Ltd.

The Korea's shipbuilding industry is the number one in the world, but it is in diminished status recently. China is challenging Korea's stronghold backed by their huge domestic market. Under their policy 'Chinese ships carry chinese goods and Chinese ships are made in China', the Chinese shipbuilding industry is continuously winning the contracts. It is different from the people of the industry in Korea who takes most orders from overseas. China's technical skills are also getting better day by day. The Korea's shipbuilding industry has kept its number one status with their strategy of taking high-valued ship orders, but it is a fait accompli that the industry is being challenged by China. In this atmosphere, the Korea's shipbuilding industry is emphasizing on improving the world's number one quality competitiveness for securing global market.

Located in Geoje, Gyeongnam, GMP is a main cooperative firm of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and it boasts global competitiveness in ship, nonferrous metals and piping fields. They are specialized in manufacturing and installing 'Spool Piece (water and sewage pipes)', which is installed in Deck House in a ship, by using plastic and stainless related piping materials. Power Korea visited the prestigious company 'GMP' and listened about the management philosophy and philosophy of life of the CEO, Youngki Ok.

GMP's technical skills in nonferrous metals and piping fields were recognized as the world class.

Ok started to work for Korea Shipbuilding Corporation from early 1980s. His ability was recognized and he had an opportunity to work for Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. He worked for the company in the plumbing design part for 15 years and started his own business as a cooperative firm of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in the nonferrous metals and piping fields. Ok has been playing a role of connecting Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, Samsung Heavy Industries and Hyundai Heavy Industries with the world's piping companies in Germany and Denmark which he was maintaining a cooperative relationship based on technical skills and trust. Since its establishment in 1999, Ok has been doing his best to get a recognition for their topnotch technical skills in nonferrous metals and piping fields like their name GMP(Global Master-Piece) suggests. Ok is known as a perfect and meticulous person when it comes to work, and he provides properties of materials, prefect technical skills of processing, and perfect after-sales services. GMP is implementing overall business in shipbuilding such as Rule & Regulation, Building Spec, Design, Manufacture, Installation, Examination and A/S. They have a total system that can manage and provide those services and is acknowledged as a unique company in nonferrous metals and piping fields. Their number one technical skills and equipments in Korea and their reasonable price have competitiveness and they are creating a sensation among their clients in the world.

Ok said "one has to be the best in one field in order to satisfy the clients who want to build the best ships in the world. The size and sales of company is not that important but the recognition as number one. Also, metalic pipes will be replaced by plastic system for anti-corrosion against sea water and maintenance of ships. Plastic and stainless piping materials will be the mainstream in shipbuilding." Ok predicted that "plastic materials will be used in ships, trains and cars because they are anti-rust, lighter and stronger than metals."

Ok started his business from his friend's small cattle shed and when it was in the right direction he built the current factory and announced a new start. Based on his 30 years of know-how, he expanded the factory to satisfy the needs of his clients and suggested the 10 right people for GMP. The main point is about the people who enjoy what they do, be proud of their job, and be recognized as number one by most. His management philosophy is 'creative innovation', 'creative ideas', and 'creative change'. Ok displayed vigilance on the Korean shipbuilding industry that they could fall into a mannerism while they boast their number one status in the world. Ok emphasized that the conversion of creative ides leads to improvement of competitiveness, perfect processing, and excellent products.

Ok, as the chairman of Geoje council of The Korean National Council for Conservation of Nature.

Volunteer works in Japan(at the devastated areas of tsunami) and Mongolia.

Ok is a devout Christian and it is his principle to help others while his body can afford physical activities. Ok takes care of his neighbours even though he is a busy person, and he took office as the 11th chairman of Geoje council of The Korean National Council for Conservation of Nature. He started these activities in order to pay back what he owed to Geoje where he was born. His first plan was to build a beautiful road on the coastal road in Geoje. Ok said "if we plant sun trees and camellia trees along the trails and coastal road, we can create beautiful roads where people can see the sea at a glance. By doing this, Geoje city will invite a lot of tourists and can be a major tourist city in Korea." He added that "the city should been appointed as an exclusive zone to make it a planned city when Daewoo and Samsung started their business here decades ago. Geoje is having difficulty due to the thoughtless developments. The major companies should have looked forward for the next 30 years to prepare a long-term plan when they set up their business here."

Ok, who is also a chairman of Geoje Central Rotary Club, visited Mito Station, in Ibaraki Prefecture(tsunmi-affected area), Japan in August this year with the club members to provide medical services. Overcoming the negative national sentiment against Japan, Ok and the members offered free medical treatments for one week. He also visited Ulan Bator, Mongolia, with other club members on 15 August, to participate in Gerr Kindergarten supporting project and provided playthings, footballs and exercise equipments. Ok is planning to do these activities in Southeast Asia such as Cambodia next year.

Ok, who is acknowledged as the best in domestic ship, nonferrous metals and piping fields! And Power Korea could strongly feel his charisma from his undefeatable professional spirit. Power Korea also learned about his warm heart from his volunteer activities. Many people say that the society is bleak. But having seen his smile while we close our interview, Power Korea wants to say that the society is still full of happy viruses. GMP, the prestigious company in nonferrous metals and piping fields! And Power Korea is looking forward to seeing the day that GMP flies high into the world and people get happier by his volunteer activities.

GMP's lovely technician.
