안정완의 그림은 철학이요, 시요, 사랑이다.
작품을 대하고 있노라면 영혼이 맑아지는 느낌이 든다. 살아 움직이는 듯한 끈임 없는 운동감, 밝은 색감, 색상과 색상과의 아름다운 조화, 정교한 붓질, 그리고 혼신을 다하는 작가의 열정과 고뇌가 보여 가슴이 출렁인다. 누리며 살고 싶다는 생각이 든다. 열심히 살아야겠다는 의욕이 터져나간다. 그녀의 작품주제가 생명사랑이기 때문일까?
안정완 작가는 화선지에 먹그림이 아닌 새로운 재료와 기법으로 생명사랑을 표현하며 대중과의 소통을 일궈내고 있어 주목된다.
생명의 고귀함, 그리고 끝없는 사랑
작가의 작품을 처음 대했을 때 서양화라는 느낌을 받을 정도로 그녀의 작품은 신선함을 담고 있었다. 화선지에 채워지는 먹과 혼합재료들의 콜라보는 동양화이지만 서양화처럼 느낄 수 있는 또 다른 힘을 내포하고 있었다. 작업의 성과를 위해 오브제나 새로운 실험적 기법들을 융통성 있게 활용하여 시대와 호흡하고, 시대를 향해 목소리를 내고 있기 때문일까?
홍익대학교 대학원에서 동양화를 전공한 그녀지만 동양화를 재료와 기법, 형식 등을 옛 부터 내려오는 틀에 가두고 싶지 않단다.
안정완 작가의 작품은 생명사랑으로부터 시작된다. “생명보다 더 소중한 것이 어디 있고, 생명보다 더 사랑해야 할 것이 어디 있을까?”라는 의미를 강조하며 표피적인 재현 현상이 아니라 사물에 내재된 본질을 작가의 심미의식에 따라 재구성하는 사의(寫意)적 표현을 하고 있다.
지난날의 작품은 비구상이 아닌 구상의 작품이었다. 자연의 고귀함과 경이로움을 담았고 항구에 떠 있는 배를 섬세하게 담아내 보는 내내 시원함과 편안함을 느낄 수 있는 작품을 했다면, 현재는 완벽한 비구상의 작품으로 대중과 소통하고 있다.
생명을 표현하기 위해 생명에 대한 이론적 고찰 즉 동양의 생명관, 생명의 특성, 동양화의 사의성 등을 깊이 연구하고 이를 표현할 기법들을 찾느라 통증에 가까운 고뇌의 시간도 많이 보냈단다.
수많은 실험을 통해 찾아낸 마블링 기법은 생명사랑 연구에 꼭 알맞은 언어중의 언어란다. 물속에서 계속 변화하는 문양은 생명이 살아 움직이는 유기성과 닮았고, 생성과 소멸을 통해 변화하고 순환하며, 끝없이 이어지는 영속성, 그리고 새롭게 변화하며 재창조하는 속성도 생명의 특성들과 꼭 닮았다며 희열을 감추지 못한다.
그녀는 “그림에도 철학이 있고 시가 있어야 더욱 큰 감동을 줄 수 있다.”며 다양한 조형요소와 원리를 통한 시각적 아름다움 외에 작가의 깊은 철학적 사고와 시(詩)적 감성을 강조한다. 그런 작품이라야 대중과 영혼의 떨림으로 이어지고 함께 행복해질 수 있다고 말이다.
끊임없이 실험하고 연구하는 것이 작가 본연의 모습이라 말하는 안정완 작가! 생명의 소중함을 바탕으로 생명을 사랑하는 그녀의 작품은 많은 이들에게 희망의 메시지가 될 것이라 생각해 본다.

나는 마블링을 통해 얻어진 형태들을 지극히 사랑한다.
물의 움직임에 따라 매체가 잠시도 쉬지 않고 그려가는 아름다운 형상! 이는 사람으로서는 도저히 만들어낼 수 없는 기기묘묘한 아름다움이다. 나는 반가운 친구를 만난 듯, 사랑하는 연인을 만난 듯, 마블링이 만들어내는 문양을 들여다보며 이야기를 듣고, 또 나의 이야기를 전하며 형태를 수정해 간다. 그래서 마블링 문양과 나의 이야기가 사랑스런 눈맞춤이 되면 준비된 한지로 그 순간의 소통점을 떠낸다. 떠내진 형태에서도 작업 의도에 맞도록 빼고 넣고 합치고 나누며 타 작업과 연결시키기도 하면서 생명사랑을 노래한다.

서툰 그림은 서툴러 좋고, 어설픈 그림은 어설퍼서 정겹다고 했다. 모자람은 사랑스러움이라고도 하였다. 이제 칠순을 넘긴 나! 이루어내기 위한 고민보다는 접을 수 있는 여유를 배우며 그래도 눈부신 색채들과 함께 놀 생각이다. 재미있게 즐기며 놀 생각이다. 목숨 줄 놓을 때까지 생명 사랑을 노래하며 행복하게 놀 생각이다.

ahn's works are philosophy, poetry and love.
By seeing her works, I feel like my soul is becoming clear.
Dynamics that is alive, bright colour and the harmony between the colours, delicate touches of brush, and her passion and anguish...my heart is rolling like waves. And I thought I want to live like enjoying every moment of my life. My desire to give my best is spreading out. Maybe because the theme of her works is love of life?
An not only uses ink and rice paper for her works but also new materials and technique to express love of life and to communicate with people and that is why she is in the spotlight.
Nobility of life, and endless love.
When I first saw An's works, I had an impression as if they are western paintings. I could feel the freshness in her works. The collaboration of inks and mixed materials filled in on rice paper was clearly oriental paintings but they contained the strength which one could feel they were western paintings. Maybe because she uses new objects and experimental technique to breath together with the age, and let out her voice to the age we live in?
Although she majored in oriental paintings at graduate school in prestigious Hongik University, she does not want to confine herself to traditional materials, technique and formalities. She emphasizes that there is nothing more precious than life, and nothing more to love than life. She expresses her inner world that can reconstruct something according to her esthetical awareness on the essence of objects rather than superficial reproduce phenomenon. Her previous works were figurative. If her previous works were about something that could give comforts and coolness by painting nobility and marvels of the nature, and a boat that is floating in harbor on canvas, she is communicating with public by non figurative works at the moment. She thought about oriental life view, the characters of life, and the inner world of oriental paintings to express life. She spent many painful times to find presentation method and found a marbling method which she says the very language that is absolutely needed for researching love of life. She said passionately that the patterns which keep changing in the water resembled organic life, and it changes and circulates through creation and termination, and its permanence that continues endlessly and the properties that changes and recreates resembled the characters of life. She said "a painting must contain philosophy and poetry to give bigger sensation", and emphasized about an artist's deep philosophical thoughts and poetic sentiments as well as visual beauty of formative elements and principle. She added that only those works can resonate one's soul and be connected with public and be happy.
An says that an artist's true self is to experiment and research ceaselessly.
I presume that her works about love of life based on its preciousness can be a message of hope for many.
I extremely love the forms which I gained through marbling.
Those beautiful forms that the medium is executing incessantly according to the movement of water! This is a marvelous beauty which human can never make. I look into the patterns which the marbling has made, I listen to its story, I tell my story, and I alter the forms as if I met a welcome friend or my love. And when the marbling patterns make eye contact with my stories, I execute the mutual understanding of the moment on a prepared rice paper. Then I sing my love of life through adding, subtracting, combining, dividing and linking with other works in accordance with my intentions in creating.

Some said that clumsy paintings are good because they are clumsy and sloppy paintings are affectionate because they are sloppy. Some said being insufficient is lovability. I, who passed over seventy now! I'm going to learn to be relaxed about giving up and I'm going to play with brilliant colours rather than achieving something. I'm going to enjoy and have fun. I'm going to sing my love of life and I'm going to play happily until I die.
