Draws for healing modern men living in monotonous cycle

Son You-seon, artist

Life in diptych ? the first half

As the advance of technology has prolonged the human span of life, more people are thinking of living the second life after retirement, considering the modern society composed of two acts of life. Together with it, learned circles and art world are naturally producing outputs under the theme of ¡®change.¡¯ Author Son You-seon is one of them and she is conveying an enlightening message on such social structure and phenomenon through the medium of painting.

Author Son You-seon is engaging in artwork on the overall topic of nature. Circulation of nature involves another change and she mostly completes her work with extension of many lines and curvaceous expressions. Besides, through lines she added Oriental feelings to her work, and even implicated some music with expressions of repeated behavior pattern and curves. This is also the way that the author herself is disclosing an unidentified big change implicitly her life has come across.

Jean Baudrillard, a French philosopher representing the 20 century, said, ¡®Image is a reflection of deep factuality,¡¯ ¡®Image conceals and deteriorates deep factuality,¡¯ ¡®Image conceals the absence of deep factuality,¡¯ ¡®Every image is irrelevant to any factuality,¡¯ ¡®Image is the simulacres of itself.¡¯

Actually, in her painting of flowers (titled No Title) we find that her flowers emphasizes the gape and distortion between flowers rather than their original magnificent and variegated colors of usual intention. This can mean an image expression of her wish to be reborn after breaking herself to disappear. On such basis, her painting has the origin in relieving the thirst of modern men who are leading a life in a cycle for running on treadmills.

The latter part of life

Author Son You-seon, who graduated in 1985 from the Art College, Sangmyung University, soon entered into her married life constituting a long period of career breaks as an artist. However, she is facing a change of life just like the image now shown in her painting. She entered Sangmyung Univ. Graduate School of Arts to study formative arts and resumed her activity of work.

Putting her motive on ¡®change¡¯ for the time of recharging, she started printing, which used to be a primitive technique of duplication, believing that its restrictive method of manufacture would put her at comfort and relief compared to other kinds of artwork. Her rehabilitation (time for recharging) started with the subject matter of a nightscape expressed by attaching a string, a symbol of arrest, on the face of a little bird before dawn, which had been her own work at the college graduation. In etching, she used the aquatint technique of corroding the object repeatedly for emphatic effect, which also resulted in another nightscape. However, her long experience taken up while she had been living so far produced another work, which was the beginning of a true change.

While she attended the college, night was the symbol of darkness and meant the subject of fear for her, but now she feels it to be an attractive object as the phase of awaiting change or start before the dawn. Author Song decided to express it as the moment of change using the flower holding femininity and life force. Printing is a picture of printing out a drawing completed with advance perfect preparation and plan, which is the work of accepting the result. With no artistic attempt for more expansion, darkness and flowers created by printing failed to transmit such a purpose effectively. Thus, she came to put focus on the expression implying the sing of the subject matter and uncertainty in conveying the meaning of change. In the meantime, as she entered into drawing, she chose the butterflies appearing in the book (Hope for the flowers) by Trina Paulus as a symbol of change to express the shape of waking up from a cocoon into the concept of motility and extension. For this, she conferred musical movement and rhythm using the overlapping lines and circles. Consequently, her painting work has appeared as an awareness of her subject with the meaning of the visible and invisible by her inner consideration, not restricted to its changing images for the reasons of motion, light and others. Her work does not end up with a skeptical view, such as extinction, disappearance, ruin and death, but expresses them together with genesis, birth and waiting to represent ¡®circulation.¡¯

Like this, author Song keeps anxious to express the circulation and change of nature in modern image. She is planning to hold a personal exhibition for a week in this October at Space Zero located at Sangmyung Univ. It is drawing our attention to how she is going to disentangle the ¡®depth of nature¡¯ before our eyes.
