수석이 담고 있는 자연의 위대함을 느끼다

자연이 위대하다는 것은 아마 누구나 아는 사실일 것이다. 자연이 만들어낸 바다, 강, 산, 나무 등은 우리 삶에서 빼놓을 수 없는 중요한 부분이듯 말이다. 특히 세월의 흔적이 묻어나는 돌들은 세월의 흔적을 간직한 채 다양한 의미를 담아내고 있다. 이런 수석의 역사는 약 2900여년전으로 인류의 시작과 함께 해왔다고 하는데 국내에서도 퇴계이황이 문양석을 즐겼다는 기록이 남아 있고 다산 정약용 선생이 강진에 귀양 가서 직접 탐석하며 수석을 아꼈다는 기록도 남아있을 정도로 수석은 인간들에게 많은 사랑을 받아왔다. 최근 이렇게 다양한 자연을 품어내는 수석을 예술로 발전시키고자 노력하고 있는 이가 바로 한국예술수석협회 이완우 회장이다. 협회의 창립과 함께 수석의 예술화를 외치고 있는 이완우 회장을 만나 앞으로의 이야기를 들어보았다. 

수석의 아름다움을 전하는 사람들 

대자연이 이룩한 위대한 자산이 바로 수석이다. 하지만 자연이 만들었다는 이유로 예술적인 취급을 받지 못해 다양한 시도를 하지 못하는 것은 수석이 갖고 있는 안타까운 부분이기도 하다. 그래서 최근 전통수석의 맥을 유지하되 예술적인 작품으로 발전시키고자 창립된 협회가 바로 한국예술수석협회이다. 이완우 회장을 필두로 전국 최고의 수석 전문가들이 집결해 수석의 예술적인 부분과 함께 수석이 주는 자연의 아름다움을 국민들에게 알리고 있다. 

이완우 회장은 30년전 취미로 돌을 모으기 시작하면서 수석을 접하게 되었고, 현재는 3000여점의 수석을 보유하고 있어 국내 최고의 수석전문가로 알려져 있다. 국내 뿐 아니라 세계각지에서 탐석한 수석과 직접 구매해 수집한 수석들이 어우러져 있는 갤러리에는 세월이 묻어나는 돌들의 기운이 웅장하게 느껴진다. 이렇듯 취미로 시작된 이완우 회장의 수석 사랑은 이제 대한민국 수석 문화의 새로운 패러다임을 열 준비를 하고 있다. 단순한 수석 수집이 아닌 수석을 이용해 예술 작품으로 승화시킨다는 것이 목표이다. 그래서 지난 2014년 6월 18~29일 서울시청 지하 1층 서울시민청 갤러리에서 창립전을 개최하며 예술수석의 출범을 알렸다. 한국예술수석협회는 자연의 일반수석을 주로 수집하며 작가의 창의적 소재를 가미하고 예술적으로 결합한 설치 작품을 선보이며 그 안에 돌이 담고 있는 의미와 작가의 메시지를 담아내 그간 볼 수 없었던 수석 내면의 기억들을 끄집어내는 연출적인 표현을 하고 있다. 그간 단순히 돌만 보여주던 것과는 다른 예술적 의미가 가미된 작가의 퍼포먼스와 연출력을 볼 수 있어 돌이 담고 있는 의미를 좀 더 쉽고 빠르게 관객에게 전달 할 수 있는 것이다. 이완우 회장은 “21세기를 맞이하여 수석전의 혁신적인 변화가 필요하다. 전위적 공간구성과 조명, 독립성과 혁신적인 음악의 조화는 물론, 주제와 철학이 있는 작품으로 승화시켜 예술수석이란 새로운 문화를 개척해 가야한다”고 전했다.     

수석은 자연이 만들어낸 완벽한 예술

기자는 이완우 회장을 만나러 갤러리에 들어서면서 새로운 분야에 대해 궁금해지기 시작했다. 마치 조각가가 의도적으로 만든 것 같은 느낌의 돌 들을 보며 조각에서는 느낄 수 없었던 자연의 위대함을 느꼈고 돌이 담고 있는 세월의 흔적은 자연을 느끼기에 충분하게 느껴졌기 때문이다. 이렇듯 수석은 단순한 돌이 아닌 세월의 흔적을 담고 있는 자연의 완벽한 예술품인 것이었다. 이런 점들이 바로 이완우 회장이 강조하는 부분이다. 수석이 예술로 취급받지 못하는 부분을 바꾸고자 예술수석을 알리기 위한 활동들을 하듯 말이다. 수석에서 가장 중요한 부분은 돌이 담고 있는 분위기와 내면의 감정들이겠지만 좌대의 중요성 또한 빼놓을 수 없다. 수석과 어우러지는 좌대를 사용하는 것이 중요하고 이 좌대를 이용해 수석이 담긴 의미를 더욱 쉽게 관객들에게 어필할 수 있어야한다. 그만큼 좌대는 수석예술에서 떼려야 뗄 수 없는 중요 요소로 자리 잡고 있었다. 

한국예술수석협회 이완우 회장은 “수석은 인간과 영원히 통할 수 있고 정신건강과 신체건강을 단련할 수 있다. 더 많은 젊은이들이 수석의 의미를 알고 자연의 세월이 담고 있는 진정한 수석을 느껴 수석을 즐기는 이들이 늘어났으면 한다”고 강조했다.

국내 순회 전시와 함께 해외 전시를 구상하고 있는 한국예술수석협회 이완우 회장. 허기수 수석부회장과 두연 이종호 선생, 그리고 협회 회원들과 함께 더 많은 이들에게 수석이 주는 자연의 아름다움을 느낄 수 있게 정진할 것이라고 다짐했다. 

Suseok (miniature landscape stones) imbued with greatness of nature

Everyone knows that nature is something great. The sea, river, mountain, trees, etc. made by Mother Nature are an indispensable part of our life. Especially, stones bearing the trace of times contain diverse meanings for us. History of Suseok goes back to about 2900 years ago with the origin of human kind. Domestically, there is a record remaining that Toegye Lee Hwang, the great Confucian scholar of the Joseon Dynasty, enjoyed Munyangseok and that another Joseon scholar Dasan Jeong Yak-yong loved Suseok exploring stones in person when exiled to Gangjin. Lately, President Lee Wan-woo of Korea Suseok Art Association is making endeavors to develop Suseok in diverse shapes of nature into arts. President Lee set about making arts of Suseok by founding the Association and we met him to hear about his future plans.  

People in promoting the beauty of Suseok 

One of the greatest assets made by Mother Nature is Suseok. However, it is regrettable that we should not be able to make diverse attempts on it as art because it is simply considered to have been made by nature. So Korea Suseok Art Association is the one recently founded to develop it into artwork while maintaining the veins of traditional Suseok. Headed by President Lee Wan-woo, top-class Suseok experts in the nation have gathered to inform the people about the beauty of nature in Suseok combining its artistic part. 

Since he took up collecting Suseok 30 years ago, President Lee Wan-woo is domestically known as the best expert in Suseok with a personal collection of 3,000 pieces. His gallery filled with Suseok explored and purchased in person from many places of the world as well as at home makes one feel a magnificent energy of stones that follows the times. Like this, President Lee’s love of Suseok has been such that he is now ready to open a new paradigm of Suseok culture for Korea. He is aiming at sublimating Suseok to artworks rather than just showing his collection. In this context, he held a foundation exhibition at the Citizen’s Gallery on the first basement of Seoul City Hall from June 18 through 29, 2014 heralding the initiation of Suseok art. Korea Suseok Art Association chiefly collects ordinary Suseok in nature, exhibiting installation works by adding and combining an author’s creative subject matter artistically and expressing the meaning of stones and message of the author with a production to derive memories, which has been unknown so far, from inside Suseok. By giving the author’s performance and production ability plus the artistic meaning unlike the existing way of simply showing stones, this method can deliver the meaning of stones more easily and quickly to spectators. President Lee Wan-woo said, “Marking the 21st century, there is a need for innovative change of Suseok exhibitions. We should open up a new culture of Suseok art by sublimating it to works of theme and philosophy as well as far-out composition of space and illumination, harmony between independence and revolutionary music.” 

Suseok is a perfect work made by nature. 

Entering the gallery to see President Lee Wan-woo, the reporter began to feel wander about this new field. It was because when I saw the stones seeming to have been made deliberately by a sculptor, I felt the greatness of nature inaccessible through sculpture and that traces of the times contained in the stones were enough to feel nature itself. Like this, Suseok struck me as a perfect artwork of nature that contains the traces of times, not just a stone. These aspects are the very part emphasized by President Lee Wan-woo, for he is active in promoting Suseok art in order to change the people’s perception about it. The most important part of Suseok must be the atmosphere of a stone and its inner feelings but the pedestal is also important. It is essential to use a pedestal in harmony with Suseok and you should appeal the meaning contained in Soseok more easily to spectators by using it. As such, the pedestal has been settled as an indispensable element in Suseok art.                   

President Lee Wan-woo of Korea Suseok Arts Association emphasized, “Suseok can communicate with humans forever and improve his mental and physical health. I hope more youths come to know the meaning of Suseok and feel its truth contained in the times of nature.”

President Lee Wan-woo is planning on an exhibition abroad together with a touring exhibition at home. He promised to be devoted to enabling more people to feel the beauty of nature through Suseok with vice president Heo Gi-soo, Mr. Lee Jong-ho (Dooyeon) and members of the association.
