Independence activist of the month

Choi Joongho (1891.1.20. ~ 1934.3.28.)

The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs chose, jointly with the Korean Liberation Association and Independence Hall, Choi Joongho as the independence activist of the month. Choi was born in Shinchon, Whanghae in 1891 and taught by Kim Gu, the principal of Yangsan School, and growing his national consciousness ever since. He got involved in 'the assassination plot against the governor-general Terauchi Kotaro' (aka '105 case') which was completely fabricated by Japanese in order to oppress anti-Japanese activists in 1911 and he was sent to prison. Choi taught students at Seoul Kyungshin School in 1914 and kept doing junior training and the restoring national rights movement but was arrested and sent to prison again. He constantly tried to find ways for independence movement. After March 1st Movement in 1919, he started to live in Shanghai as an exile and Kim Gu arranged for him to be active in the Police Bureau in the Home Office of Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea(PGRK). He studied at the School of Military Attache which was established by PGRK in order to train anti-Japanese soldiers. Choi visited Guangdong for war funds and diplomatic activities and participated, with Park Eunseek, in publishing Samin Newspaper. And in 1924, he was elected as a member of the board of Shanghai Overseas Korean Association(SOKA) to protect livelihood of the Korean residents. He worked as the dean and a teacher at Insung School, run by SOKA, and trained many students. He also formed an association to financially support PGRK and compatriots who were in difficulty. In late 1920s, Choi became a member of executive committee of the Korea Sole Party Shanghai Promotion Agency and tried to settle an ideological conflict among independence movement camp. In 1929, he was appointed as both a member and the head of Shanghai Korean Independence Activists Alliance after the One Party Promotion Campaign was broke up in 1929 due to the perception gap between left-and-right wing groups and China's Kuomintang-Communist division. In 1931, he started to work as the head of Independence Activists Alliance. However, after Yun Bonggil the Martyr's Honggu Park Movement on April 1932, many independence activists left Shanghai due to the Japanese oppression. He contracted TB, caused by torture and the hardships of prison. He took an eternal sleep in Shanghai on March 28th 1934. The Korean government conferred Order of Merit for National Foundation, Independence Medal to Choi in 1977.
