주위를 둘러보면 스마트폰이나 스마트패드를 든 아이들이 많다. 육아 편의를 위해 부모들이 스마트폰을 아이들에게 쥐어 주기 때문이다. 한편으로는 아이들의 스마트폰 사용에 대한 부정적인 시각이 커지는 시점에서, 이러한 현실이 위기라기보다는 ‘기회’라는 역발상을 통해 교육과 놀이로 유도하게끔 하는 ‘스마트 에듀테인먼트’ 기업이 있어 화제다. 연간 3조원 시대에 접어든 e-러닝(Learning)시장에 뛰어든 (주)아이큐비스의 장욱기 대표로부터 다양한 스마트 콘텐츠의 가능성에 대해 들어 보았다.

귀여운 3D캐릭터와 놀다 보면 자연스럽게 학습돼

에듀와 엔터테인먼트의 합성어인 에듀테인먼트 사업은 집중시간이 짧은 영유아를 둔 부모들을 위한 유망 산업이다. 캐릭터 및 교육과 놀이를 자연스럽게 연결할 수 있기 때문이다. “3-6세 유아를 둔 부모들 중 80% 이상이 주 1시간 이상 자녀들에게 스마트폰을 주고, 50% 이상은 3시간이 넘는다는 통계가 있다. 이는 사회적으로 부정적인 의견이 절대적이지만, 바쁜 부모들 입장에서는 짧은 시간 동안 순식간에 집중하게 되는 스마트폰 영상과 게임의 도움을 받을 수밖에 없다” 장욱기 대표가 컨텐츠 제공 플랫폼을 스마트폰과 타블렛으로 고른 이유였다. “스마트폰 사용이 필요악이라면, 우리는 부모 입장에서 의미 있는 콘텐츠를 제공하여 부모의 ‘죄책감 없는’ 여가시간 확보와 효율적인 교육 실현이 가능하다고 생각했다” 본래 해외 마켓 전문가였던 장 대표는 이벤트 업무 중 컨텐츠 개발, 애니메이션 전문가 등과 의기투합해 2013년 4월 (주)아이큐비스를 창립한다. 이들의 첫 고객층은 유아동과 그 부모들이었으며, 장 대표는 유아 전문가의 자문을 통해 캐릭터를 기반으로 한 언어 교육 프로그램을 만들어 냈다. 아이 입장에서 예쁜 3D 동물 캐릭터와 애니메이션을 따라 듣고, 쓰는 과정을 마치 게임의 미션처럼 제공하여 재미를 붙이면 스스로 찾아서 하게 되는 식이다. 특히 영어공부는 파닉스 교수법을 응용하고 아이의 눈높이에 맞춘 학습 콘텐츠를 제공한다. 아이들은 반복-습득-모방에 따르는 행동패턴을 보이고, 색칠과 선긋기처럼 간단한 진행으로 유도하면 아이들도 충분히 놀면서 배울 수 있다. 기존의 스트리밍이나 인터렉티브 앱북처럼 독립화된 단방향 서비스가 아닌, 캐릭터와 애니메이션이 어우러진 모바일 키즈앱으로서 높은 효율을 자랑한다. 

이지&엘리를 시작으로 새로운 컨텐츠에 도전

현재 안드로이드 기반으로 된 (주)아이큐비스의 대표 캐릭터인 이지&엘리는 유아용 영어교육 앱으로 2013년 9월 에피소드 1이 출시되었고, 캐릭터 업그레이드 및 게임 스테이지의 요소를 더한 2,3편이 출시될 예정이다. 장 대표는 디즈니의 덤보 이후로 세계적으로 히트한 코끼리 캐릭터가 없음에 착안하여 영리한 코끼리 ‘엘리’를 만들었다. 그리고 발상을 전환하여 영악한 이미지를 가진 여우에게 순수하고 활달한 성격을 부여해 ‘이지’ 캐릭터를 완성했다. 이들은 상호보완적인 관계이며, 할아버지에게 받은 엘리의 책에 이지가 가진 연필로 적으면 색이 나타나는 등 아이들의 흥미를 자극하는 스토리 라인을 짰다. “행동 발달 융합교육을 기반으로 제작하고 있다. 현재 ‘이지&엘리’를 비롯해 올해 추가 출시 예정인 행동발달 교육 앱인 ‘비비드 몬스터’ 캐릭터 등을 보유하고 있으며, 2015년에는 스마트폰 뿐 아니라 스마트패드가 주류가 될 것으로 예상하여, 현재 교육과 어플로 인지도를 높인 후 애니 제작 등으로 진출하고자 한다” 장 대표는 이지&엘리를 개발하며 자체 디자인과 해외 모바일 엑스포 참가, 그리고 주고객층인 부모들에 대한 품평과 테스트 버전의 피드백을 계속하고 있다. 다수의 앱다운로드를 기록한 이지&엘리 캐릭터는 온라인 스티커, 오프라인의 휴대폰 케이스 등으로도 만날 수 있다. 앞으로는 추가 디자인된 교육용 캐릭터 이미지 포지셔닝을 통한 타 교육 서비스 및 캐릭터 라이센스 사업을 운영할 계획이며, 서비스 타깃은 성인층으로도 확대될 전망이다. 오프라인에서의 캐릭터 상품, 그리고 캐릭터 테마를 적용한 키즈카페 등도 계획 중이다. 또한 교육과 놀이라는 장점을 살려, 어린이집과 연계한 언어교육 프로그램과 유아용 타블릿PC시장을 주요 플랫폼으로 활용하여 이지&엘리를 총 5편까지 이어갈 전망이다. “구글TV, IP TV기반의 교육콘텐츠를 개발하여 수업 자료로 활용되는 방안도 생각하고 있다” 이렇듯 부모와 아이들에게, 그리고 모바일에서의 새로운 여흥을 기대하는 이들에게 (주)아이큐비스는 참신한 아이디어로써 다가서고 있다.
