우리는 노래하는 그 시간을 너무 기다린다

경상도 유림 문화의 대표지역을 꼽으라면 좌안동, 우안음(함양, 거창)이 꼽힐 정도로 거창은 정통유교의 고을이다. 갈천동문(葛川同門)덕유산의 수려한 산천과 자연환경이 그려낸 한 폭의 시와 산수화 같은 선비의 고장, 지자요수 인자요산(知者樂水 仁者樂山)이라, 지혜로운 사람은 물을 좋아하고, 어진 사람은 산을 좋아한다는 곳으로써 ‘인공위성에서 보면 우리나라에서 공기가 가장 맑게 보이는 곳이 북상면이기도 하다’ 노래하는 청정 농산물 홍보대사, 거창 북상면 주민 31명으로 구성된 농부 합창단이 여러 굵직한  대회에서 입상하여 실력을 인정받고 있어 화제다. 거창의 고즈넉한 풍광과도 잘 어울리며, 팀 이름도 너무나 시적인 <거창하게 노래하는 농부들>합창단 단원들을 만나 그들이 부르는 아름다운 하모니를 들어보았다.   

우리는 진짜행복한 사람이다

  그동안 <거창하게 노래하는 농부들>은 전국 시도를 대표하는 합창단이 모여 경합을 벌이는 전국합창대회에서 수많은 입상을 하면서 열렬한 박수갈채를 받아왔다. <거창하게 노래하는 농부들>은 지난 2011년 8월 전국 987개의 면단위로서는 처음으로 합창단을 창단하였으며 단원들의 평균연령 58세라고 한다. 단원 중 최고령자 82세부터 최근 새로 입단한 막내 농촌총각까지 가족적인 분위기로 합창단에서는 36세 총각도 어르신들한테는 귀염둥이로 사랑받고 있다고 한다. 합창단 단원들은 매주 수요일 저녁 8시부터 10시까지 두 시간 동안 연습시간을 가진다. 새벽부터 농사일로 고단하지만 행복한 하루를 합창으로 마무리하기위해 무리지어 연습실로 나오신다고 한다. 덕유산 자락은 산세가 험하기로 유명하며, 겨울에는 눈이 많이 내리는데 연중 합창단의 방학이라면 폭설이 내릴 때라고 한다. ‘말하자면 천재지변에 의한 강제적 방학이라고나 할까 ~~!!’ 산에서 나오는 임산물을 채집하거나, 특용작물농사로 많이 힘들고 피곤하시지만, 연습에 방해되는 일들이 있거나 쓸데없이 쉬는 시간이 길어지면 무척 싫어하신다고 한다. 

“연습시간에 90% 이상의 출석률을 보일 정도로 열정적이고, 처음에는 악보를 접해본 단원이 거의 없어 지휘자가 선창하면 따라 부르는 형태로 했지만, 지금은 조금씩 독보에 익숙해져, 서로의 소리를 들어가며 화음을 만들고 행복해하는 단원들을 보면 너무나 뿌듯하다”고 김은애 지휘자는 자랑스러워한다.

거창에서 울려 퍼지는 아름다운 하모니를 기대하며

  이렇게 고된 연습 후 숨은 열정을 발휘하는 것도 좋지만 단원들이 이구동성으로 얘기하는 것은 ‘어울려 사는 재미의 재발견’이다. 옆 사람의 목소리에 귀 기울이다 보니 세대· 성별· 출신 등 지역구성원 간에 존재하는 크고 작은 간극이나 장벽이 자연스레 사라진 것이다. 청장년과 노년층간의 거리가 좁혀지고, 모임이 공식화되다 보니 서로에게 깍듯한 예절 또한 아름다운 하모니를 이루고 있다고 한다. 토박이들은 초보 농사꾼인 귀농인 들에게 영농비법 전수를 아끼지 않고, 귀농인 들도 도시에서 배운 이성의 잣대를 먼저 들이대기보다는 농촌지역의 둥글둥글한 삶에 녹아드는 듯 보였다. <거창하게 노래하는 농부들>은 향후 각종 초청공연 및 소외된 이웃과 환우들을 위한 찾아가는 음악회, 연말 정기공연을 계획하고 있으며, 지역 군민들에게 이러한 음악활동이 단순히 취미활동에 그치는 것이 아니라, 청정거창농산물을 적극 홍보할 목적이 창단취지라고 했다. 심재춘 단장은 “거창군, 북상면, 북상면주민자치위원회, 한국마사회 농어촌 희망재단 의 지원과 많은 분들의 도움으로 합창단을 잘 운영해 올 수 있었다” 며 지금까지 응원해 주신 모든 분들께 고마움을 전하면서도, 농간 협력을 위한 가교 역할을  더욱 충실히 할 것이라고 다짐했다.

김은애 지휘자는 “앞으로도 거창군과 거창군 농산물을 홍보하기 위해 적극 노력할 것이며, 정직하게 농사를 짓듯이  서투르지만 우리만의 소박한 화음으로 많은 사람들에게 감동을 전할 수 있는 신토불이 합창과, 단원들이 아름다운 드레스와 연주복을 입고, 무대에서 정직한 하모니로 노후를 장식하며 행복해하는 모습을 오랫동안 지켜주고 싶다”고 말하며, 더 활발한 활동을 할 것이라고 포부를 밝혔다.

 “농사는 운명, 노래는 숙명~~!!!” 이라 외치며, 신명나는 무대를 연출하여 청중들의 열렬한 환호와 앙코르 공연을 이어가는 거창군 북상면의 자랑인 소리단체

We wait too much for the time to sing

 "Grandly Singing Farmers", serves as a publicity ambassador for pollution-free, highland produce from the south Deogyu mountain at Buksang Township in Geochang County.

Geochang was a town of the orthodox Korean Confucianism. It was also a seat of Korean Confucian scholars, seeing the Deogyu mountain's beautiful landscape which, according to a Confucian verse, is loved by generous people. Furthermore, seen from the satellite, the Buksang area has cleaner air than any other in Korea. 

A farmers' choir, composed of 31 Buksang residents, is in the news a lot these days for its record of winning many national-level singing contests, also working as a publicity ambassador for Buksang's clean produce.

This month, the Power Korea could have a chance to enjoy the beautiful harmonies of the choir "Grandly Singing Farmers", whose name sounds very poetic, so goes well with Geochang's quiet scenery.

We are really happy people

So far, "Grandly Singing Farmers" has received enthusiastic applause, winning many national-level chorus contests. It was formed on Aug. 2011 for the first in the country at the township level and the members' average age is 58. "The eldest member is 82 years old. We are like family. Even the 36-year-old rookie is adored by seniors." said the conductor Kim Eun-eh.

The choir members practice from 8 to 10 p.m. every Wednesday. Though tired from hard farm work, they come a long way to practice, from deep valleys of the rough Deogyu mountain. Conductor Kim said "90 percent of the members take part in the practice. At first, few of them were familiar with scores. So, we practiced with the singers repeating after the conductor, which is a little different from what other choirs do. Now, they are used to reading scores, feeling happy listening to each other's harmony. I am really proud of them."

Beautiful harmonies resonating in Geochang

For them, it is good to display their hidden passion for singing after a hard practice, but what's better they say in one voice is to rediscover the pleasure of living together. In listening to the voices of those singing next to each other, differences among them disappeared in generation, gender, and birth place.

Grandly Singing Farmers is planning to conduct various invitation performances, visitation performances to neglected neighbors and patients, and the year-end regular concert. They revealed to the county residents that these musical activities are not only for their hobby, but also for promoting farm products from Geochang.

“With the support of the Buksang Residents' Association, the Korean Horse Affairs Association, and the Rural Areas' Hope Foundation, we can run the choir well so far." head of the choir Shim Jae-chun said.

Conductor Kim, on the other hand, showed her aspiration: “I will do my best to promote produce from Geochang, and impress many people with our own clumsy, but unsophisticated harmony. I would like to help my members, as long as possible, to enjoy their old age, dressed in beautiful performance uniforms.

This reporter is waiting for their next move, who receives frenzied applause and calls for encores from the audiences by staging cheerful performances under the slogan of "Farming is our fate and singing is our destiny."
